GAF: I killed a mouse and I feel pretty shitty about it

Sticky traps are horrifying. The prolonged fear, fatigue, hunger, and confusion is over the top

And they can harm unwanted animals too

Dont feel bad now. The fact that you are feeling something at least shows that you care, just dont do it again :)

Back in undergrad we caught two mouses in one of the sticky traps. The little guys were squeaking pretty loudly and I felt pretty bad too. Someone else ended up carrying them off to the trash. Never used sticky traps since.

Depending on how "old" the rat / mouse is some actually seem to know to stay the fuck away from cage traps. Part of that would be the object looks pretty Admiral Akbar as is to them. Reason why the snap traps still work is just because looks like a piece of food on a flat surface. Tried that on several occasions and no go. Younger rodents seem to fall for it though.

Just keep trying to look for other solutions am sure there must be newer effective non-lethal traps by now.

Well this brought back some memories lol

Now that it's bumped did you ever think of that mouse until now?

I've seen mice get mangled in the non-lethal traps, too many moving parts in them. Snap traps are my go to method. I've only seen them not cause insta-death once and that's because it was placed incorrectly.

I'm not really an animal rights guy, but glue traps are barbaric. Just get a simple spring trap and get it over with.

glue traps are barbaric, they should be outlawed. factory farming is also barbaric.

people think glue traps are horrible but still eat meat and dairy without giving it a second thought. it's crazy how we can compartmentalize these things. not surprising given how culturally acceptable eating animals is, but still... crazy.

You registered for GAF on the day this thread was created, and your only posts (including this bump) have to do with killing mice. What is going on with you.

lol what the hell

if you're gonna get rid of a pest, might as well end it quickly rather than let it suffer

I still feel shitty about killing two mice about 15 years ago. We were renovating an old house my mom bought and there were mice in the wall. I lured two mice in a mason jar, with cheese, that was placed at an angle and had water in it, so they could get in but not crawl out. When both mice were in the jar I put the lid on and threw it outside in the snow where it was -25c...

:'(

I used one of these live traps at my old house.

VERY effective. Only catches one (maybe 2 if you're lucky) at a time, but I caught about a dozen mice. Took them to a large park about 2 miles away and released them.

I caught a mouse in a sticky trap once. I took it outside and let the cats have it.

I thought it was better to let the cats eat it than for it to starve to death.

Sticky traps are for the human so they don't have to get their widdle fingies hurty. They don't want to feel the pain that happens when they set the trap wrong.

You're probably torturing them more than the quick snap that you're so abhorrent against.

Next time make sure the mouse is dead before you throw it out. Leaving it stuck on a trap is pretty cruel. If you have to, stomp on its head with the heel of a boot. (Something I couldn't do myself, gah).

Get the old fashioned snap traps or a live trap.

Honestly snap traps aren't 'much' better, I remember using one. Poor little guy didn't get his neck broken and he squealed and flapped around for a solid 10 mins.

Edit: nvm after some research it turns out that shit really is illegal.

Just put a snap trap with peanut butter. If you use glue traps you're going to have to hit the nice in its nose really hard so it dies :(

Get a cat. Mine even goes after mosquitoes and flies that come in the house over the summer. Never before have I had such a pest free house.

Cute little vid of a weed dealer dealing with two hippie chicks who regret using a glue trap

Bag and then smash is probably best but what if you put it in a plastic bag and then put that in the freezer? Isn't freezing to death an okay way to go?

Go with a snapping mouse trap. A cat can be insidious with their kills if they're not hungry.

Quick. Clean. Efficient.

My cat doesn't eat his kills. He immediately snaps their necks, throws them across the room, then lets my outside cat play with it.

Maybe my cat is just cold...

My grandfather used to use these

at our summer home

They seemed to be pretty effective and pretty quick.

That's what I grew up with. Those things are scary as hell to set and they hurt like hell when you fuck up. Peanut butter is a better thing though. Cheese is a lie.

Poor mouse. :(

I get non lethal traps. Not that I've had to use one in years at the place I'm currently at.

This is what I have:

mouse-trap-multi-catch.jpg

You put some peanut butter in there lightly onto a little platform. Then put the trap down on the floor, where they hang out. Mouse goes in a little hole, goes on the platform with peanut butter. The pressure on the platform then switches a lever to shut the hatch where the mouse entered. The hatch can then be pushed from the outside (so other mice can get in) but cant be pushed outwards. Caught three mice in one trap at one time due to that. Then I just travel some distance from my house and open the case and let them out (stinks a fair bit though after having mice sweating, and pooping in there though so it needs to be washed afterwards).

Anyway I'm in Australia so not sure if you can get the exact model elsewhere. Found this on PETA's site though:

Humane Smart Mousetrap

I'm sure there are similar non lethal mousetraps you can get though without having to order that there, from hardware stores or something.

I've had to killa few rats over the years and the regular spring traps have worked great for me and they seem to kill them fast.

You have to kill them because of diseases and all that stuff, but those sticky traps are just cruel.

Now...spiders, those are spawns from hell that should just die slowly

With sticky traps, the first step is to not use them, but if you do, you NEED to kill the mouse/rat as soon as its caught. Not doing so makes its death needlessly prolonged.

I do this. Glue traps just work best for me. We also have 2 cats so there is that... its wild seeing one of our cats catch one and play with it, throwing it up in the air, around the room..

I remember when I was a lil kid I made a trap out of a toy wrestling cage, a pencil or stick and string. I waited like a cat and actually caught the mouse. I had no idea what to do next...I just let it go...lol.

I hated the idea of letting them die slowly with the glue traps, so I took the blunt side of a knife and got it over with quickly. I hated it, but I think it was more humane. I'll also say that glue traps are really not effective, you'll get one or two, but not the bulk of the mice running around. Snap trap with food you know the mice like usually works best. Snap traps are also reusable.

I found this out when I used to put them on the floor, before we had cats. I wound up concealing glue traps in plastic bags.....they are some smart lil bastards.

Even on the counter...I have seen one run up over the trap by running against the wall, like a scene from Mirrors Edge...

Ah... mice and rats. I remember getting hired to deal with them when the local pest control failed my clients.

Sometimes I used a gun. Most of the time, I just let traps do all the work. For me, the quickest death is either a bullet or a clean quick beheading with my trusty knife..

I remember one time I used a friend's trained cat to deal with some mice. that cat was cold as ice. even played with one as it was eating it. that day, I learned cats are fucking cruel.

lol had no idea this was bumped too i should have looked at the date!

The type I used was something like this but it had a snap door too that was pretty far from the middle section which had the "hook" where you would put the bait on. It was more just a J shaped non sharpened metal rod that you would attach food on it well enough so tugging at it unhooks the closing mechanics for the front trap. The hole on the top was a bit off centered. This was back in the mid 80s though so unable to find the exact one I used back then.

I had talked with an exterminator and he says its always a pain in the ass when its like an infestation that has been going on for a while as those rats / mice are generally smarter than some that just appeared in someones home.

I guess glue traps are alright or whatever, but I know I personally wouldn't be able to deal with it. Just seems fucked up to me.
Luckily I've never had any mouse/rat problems. I think if I did I'd go with the snap insta-death traps though.

Posted this in the funny pics thread recently, seems relevant:

Had a mouse rustling around in the trashcan. I didn't like that, and wanted to trap it, but my girlfriend didn't want to murder the creature.

I bought a mousetrap that's just a box that catches mice without killing them, so you could release them later away from your house. The problem was that the mouse freaked out while in the box and it wasn't that easy to get it out. I shook the box around and poked at it, nothing worked.

Then I just randomly smack the top and dude just fucking rocketboosts away:

I've laughed at this for pretty much the entire day. I'd photoshop a tiny jetpack to the little guy if I had the skills.

Fuck mice. They shit and piss everywhere, tear shit up and get into everything. A fucking gross pest that deserves to it. I have had serious mice issues in my house over the years and it fucking sucks.
