Some decent hiking shoes/boots; then go hiking and explore nature. Time well spent.
Or, get a decent amateur telescope and view the awesome night sky a bit closer. :)

The ultimate pog!

Looking for something to buy is bad now?

After living the past 4 years, I'd probably say that conspicuous consumption probably isn't the wisest thing right now (yet probably the best thing to do). But I don't know the OP's financial situation, so whatever.

Tablet? Not sure if that is something you'd want, and it'd probably cost a little bit over 500, but hey, its an idea.

EDIT: Or, as others have said, save your money for something better.

He seems to have some extra spendable money so why not?

1. i already save most of my money
2. finished a project and got paid for it + other income.
3. i want to take advantage of the amazingly good exchange rates at the moment.

I think that threads like these just make it look kind of frivolous. Not that there's anything wrong with frivolity, but often I find that I can get something more rewarding if I just save more money and plan for a bigger or more personally interesting purchase (ie: I know that I would want it aside from my ability to buy it). Personally I think pretty much everything should follow that criteria. In my experience it's more economical in terms of costs/rewards and I think it's only sensible to be mindful of such economy regardless of how much money a person has, as otherwise it's 'wasteful'. I tend to regret the things I've bought that I didn't think about enough, and on the other side it seems like no investment can be planned too much... of course they can, but it's a lot harder.

I think people, or at least I tend to interpret these questions in so far as what I'd do. Buying something because you have money is practically incomprehensible to me :P As I said earlier, my desire to have something seems to almost always come before my ability to buy it. I usually save up my money until I have like 10k, and then I have enough flexibility to probably get or do most things that I could really want. But I've never had any problems with saving, I don't watch my money at all, I just usually have little urge to go buy things that I haven't reasoned out in advance as 'worthwhile'.

Buy yourself a nice tailored suit. It pays dividends.

This is as good of a suggestion as any.

i'm already heavily invested in kitten mittens.

Me too. Tired of my cat clawing my furnitures.

Buy yourself an expensive pair of headphones and amp for quality gaming sound.

I second the headphone replies. Seriously, your life will change with an awesome pair of headphones. With a 500 dollar budget, you can get some badass phones and an awesome amp, and I promise you the quality of your music will jump seemingly ten fold.

Pull the trigger man. Buying nice headphones last year totally made my Christmas.

Buying things usually makes me feel shitty, so I wouldn't buy something unless I knew it was something I wanted beforehand. And even if I want something, I usually wait a month to see if I still want it after a month. Then I buy it.

Also, if you just buy something because people on the internet tell you to, it's not going to be very interesting. Buy something unique to you, so that you can at least experience something interesting and maybe talk about it if you think someone would care. For me, it's things like expensive dark chocolate or Turkish coffee. For example, my Turkish coffee pot is a talking point if someone comes over to my place. $40.
