GAF, I want to play some games in space

Barely a game but if you're into space plots, it's got it.

I'd suggest Sins of a Solar Empire as well, given that it's a brilliant game, but I don't think it has the sense of scale you're looking for at all.

Quite a lot of terrific space strategy games out there. He's spoiled for choice, the OP.

whatever happened to that StarGate MMO?

EDIT: Googled.

Jan 17, 2011
As we indicated in our previous announcement, as of January 16, 2011, we are unfortunately no longer able to sell or operate Stargate Resistance. We are actively evaluating options for Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, Inc. and its products, and will update you as soon as additional information is available. Thank you for your continued support.
Well shit

Yeah, I'm coming to realize that. It doesn't feel like it sometimes though. And there don't appear to have been really any enormous space RPGs in the last few years, even if a lot of other genre's are fairly well represented.

Uhm, I still need to play it once. Stupid backlog... :(
My last play through have been on PSP, playing 40 mins everyday during lunch hour at work, you can do it :c

We are finally getting some great new* stuff soon. Well new stuff that appeals to me is coming soon
X Rebirth - trailer (Privateer meets spreadsheets)
Sword of the Stars II - trailer (4XRTS)

*directed to the strategy comment
straight RPGs are definitely underrepresented

Dead Space is IMO the best new IP this generation.

Quoting only because OP mentioned sense of scale. I thought the atmosphere and scale was phenomenal in Dead Space (will pick up DS2 during the summer sale). As atmosphere goes, just an incredible job of putting you onto a space station gone horribly amuck. It oozes style like few games ever.

That'll be hard. Not many people get to go to space. And when they do, they're usually too busy doing astronaut stuff to play games.

Conquest: Frontier Wars is a good example of a top-down 3D Space RTS with complex mechanics, resource collection and strategy management. Big maps can have multiple wormholes that link several playfields together in real time, and you must maintain a supply line across your territory for your ships to be able to attack.

Hegemonia: Legions Of Iron is a bigger and more complex Homeworld, without the atmosphere or good narrative. It's on GOG.

Since we're on the topic of space games... Not to bud in, but does anyone know what happened to Jumpgate Evolution? I was really looking forward to that, and haven't heard anything about it in a loooong time.

Freespace 2, the last and the greatest of the space flight sims.

Just quoting so that it doesn't get lost on the thread... Make sure to download the freespace 2 open to patch it to improve its graphics, gameplay and extend with user created campaigns and total conversions using the game's engine (battlestar galactica, starfox, babylon 5, homeworld, etc).

Get Ur-Quan masters if you play Star Control 2, it's free, and more full featured (high quality ogg score, VA & videos from 3D0 port, doesn't need DOSBox).

Also, get Master of Orion 1 + 2. Best 4X space games ever made, and probably still the best today.

SMT Strange Journey is more spacey sci-fi oriented. I liked it anyways, but everyone has different opinions on SMT games.

I did but it was a laggy mess... I gave it a chance for some weeks but then I never went back. I'll give it a go and see if it got any better from then.

I played it about a month ago and didnt really experience any lag. Looks beautiful too!

OK this is my wheelhouse.

I can get a bigger list together, but for now...
Homeworld: You will be slowly crossing space while coming across some really great environments and proper space mysteries.
Imperium Galactica 2 (if you can find it dirt cheap) is worth looking for just to check out their take on a galactic map.
It's a shame it took 40+ replies for a Homeworld mention. It's easily one of my favorite RTS games of all time, irrespective of its fantastic setting and story. And you don't even need to scrounge around for mods to get it to look nice (just some registry edits for widescreen IIRC).

The entire series is just so, so good. WHERE THE FUCK IS HOMEWORLD 3 RELIC?!

I don't think it has been mentioned yet, but a game with a HUGE sense of scale is Eve:Online. Monthly sub and all, but still a great space game. Especially if you love Microsoft Excel. It's pretty much Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets, in space(lol, jk, sometimes the menus are overbearing, but all in all a great game none the less!)

I'd have mentioned it much sooner, but the post suggested a more X/Freelancer vibe than a Sins/Homeworld one. Homeworld is a great game, but its one of those games that either you think is ground breaking or you just dont get it.

There are some strange answers here though, Child of Eden? First, the game isnt out. Second, its not really about being in space, its rez with a ethereal makeover (must play game, but not exactly what the OP is looking for)

Shattered Horizon is a very cool multiplayer, infantry FPS taking place entirely around asteroids and stuff in zero G. Only bad thing is that few people actually play it.

Tachyon: The fringe
It is an space sim opera with the main character voiced by Bruce Campbell.

Edit: Colony Wars is also correct

Independence War I and II will treat you very nicely if you dig in-depth space sims.

I second this emotion, these are a good choice especially w/r/t the sense of scale the OP asked for.

I enjoy Sins of a Solar Empire. I think an expandalone is coming out later this year though so it may be best to wait and get the newer better gigantic-er game for your first experience.

gotta test the effects of zero gravity on navigation of platforming sections.

Get Freelancer if you have friends to play it with and if servers are still up. Other than Star Control 2 it's my favourite game set in space, a nice mix of modern action and oldschool freedom/exploration.

Freelancer + Crossfire, Takagi's, or Discovery mods. One of those 3. Crossfire is probably now the most developed with fuild economy, singleplayer, 200+ new ships, tons of new systems, and literally hundreds of new weapons types. Discovery and Takagi's are both amazing as well, Crossfire just has a bit more work on it right now.

They also have online servers that are live all the time and you can play with others or singleplayer(my favorite style) All of the mods also do a tremendous job adding mystery to the universe with ghost stories, mysterious shipwrecks and other such stuff.
