GAF, I'm going to try 1 beer tonight.

Tomorrow I'm going to the local liquor store and want to buy a few different types to try. I'm not looking to spend a boat load, but want to try neat stuff (if it's available).

Any favorites that have already been posted?

I find it kinda hard to believe that a 21 years old person hasn't tried beer yet. That said, you're not missing much, I don't think it's a tasty beverage.

Anyway, good luck OP!

A good commonly-available beer is Ranger by New Belgium. It's an IPA (hoppy).

To be honest, beer tasted like shit to me for almost a decade before I started to become okay with it.

I still don't LIKE it, but at least I can drink it now without having it ruin the taste of anything I'm eating at the same time.

I consider it something of an advantage that I don't really like beer, since getting a beer at a restaurant nearly doubles the cost of your meal.

Why drink it at all?
I've tried for years too, trying everything recommended and nope. I'm done. Aside from that very first sip of something ice cold, it's awful.

The only things I like are ciders, and lambic type drinks.

Just tried this last week. Good stuff!

I've been on a Sierra Nevada Big Foot barleywine kick as of late. Might be a bit too strong for ya though op. Belgium style beers might be something you want to try. I think they were sort of a stepping stone for me, when it came to trying stronger beers.

Someone suggested Hoegaarden, I'd say it's a great beginners beer. Wheat beer in general is very easy to drink.

First time I tried beer I threw up amost instantly. First three years of drinking alcohol I couldn't even smell a beer without getting sick, and the only thing I could drink was cider.

Fast-forward about 12 years. I cannot imagine anything tasting better than a good beer. I love trying new beers, learning about the different types, etc. Truly a drink fit for the gods.

Beer is delicious.

It really is. And the more you try the more you appreciate the differences between the amazing selection of beers we all have to choose from. My current favorites:

Woodchuck Amber and Guinness when I want to treat myself:

This is seriously like a delicacy for me.

When I'm in the mood for a strong, bitter IPA...this is what I grab:

At over 11% abv...I have yet to finish a six pack in one evening. Such a mellow. relaxing buzz.

My top right now is this though:

I can't get it locally though. My sister came in from out of town this weekend and my wife had her stop and get me a six-pack to surprise me with it. I coulda kissed them both. Soooo good. It's like dessert in a glass.

Does anyone remember what Belgian beer Evillore was raving about in his travel thread?

Also this is one of my favorites:

Simply delicious

Question...are you saying that you Mix Woodchuck and Guinness? Sounds interesting :O

Hoegaarden is pretty good, but yea, it is a "beginner's" wheat beer. Once I got into wheats and went back to Hoegaarden it was definitely too sweet and lacked tasty subtleties of others.

None of my friends actually like wheat beer, as a lot of them can have a really weird bitter/sweet combination that doesn't sit right with a lot of people.

Try this one if you can find it.

Awesome. Just had a bottle of this on Friday. It's pretty good, I don't think I'd drink it regularly though.

edit: The Banana Bread beer that is.

I tried beer once a few years ago. It was gross. The only half-palatable alcohol I can stand is wine, and I probably drink about half a glass every 3 months.

My local bar serves Weihenstephaner. I think I drank too much of it, it no longer tastes as amazing as it once did.

Yep. The picture didn't show up at first but that shows you what it looks like. Pour half the glass with Woodchuck...then use a bar spoon (or big spoon) to slowly layer the Guinness on top. It tastes amazing as you drink it. You get the bitterness of the Guinness and the sweetness of the Woodchuck occasionally seeps through. I'm drooling right now thinking of it, lol

Hefeweisens are so good.

No beer newbie is going to enjoy a IPA. I doubt they could stomach a decent pale ale.

Stick with lighter (and cheaper) stuff like New Castle and Fat Tire until you can appreciate a 10 dollar per bottle beer.

Though you may like Chimay but I think its over priced.

Got me a 12 of something called Goose Island. Never heard of it, hope its decent

One beer will not get you drunk, no. In general you can have two or three beers before you will feel a little goofy (note: you will still be drunk for driving purposes before this).

It may be possible with a Dogfish Head 120min IPA + empty stomach depending on how much he weighs :P

The fuck, I came in here just to post Dogfish Head 120 Minute. And yes, I got drunk off of one bottle. It's currently 18% ABV but I swear I remember it being over 20% when I had it eight or nine years ago.

Surprised it hasn't been suggested yet (or, if it has, I missed it)

to the OP:

Find a local brewery, go in, sit down, and order a flight. It'll show up looking something like this:
jUWk0XMl.jpg

2-4 oz samplings of the various beers they brew. It'll probably have a light or a lager, a pale ale, an amber ale, and a stout or porter. Each beer will be very, very different from eachother, and will allow you to determine which direction your tastes are initially going.

Understand that everyone here raving about which beer is the best and their favorite have extremely different tastes. Someone who's into Stouts probably won't like a light. Someone who likes nutty browns might detest IPAs.

The idea of a flight is to learn what you like. It's best if the brewery also provides some information about each beer. What are the IBUs? What is the alcohol content? It is nitrogen tapped?

Yes, I'm 21 (turned it in October). I've never tried it, but curiosity has gotten the best of me and I want to try one tonight. I won't get drunk from 1 beer though correct? I just want to see what it tastes like.
Never really liked it I like hard alcohol. Everyone prefers different tastes.

Lots of great suggestions for "beginner" beer here. When I first started getting into beer, it was Hoegaarden, ciders, Wells Banana Bread and lambic. Later once you get "used" to the taste you can try IPAs and anything more hoppy.

Some other good starter beers that I love:

(this stuff is incredible!)

If you are into coffee, stouts are good but a bit more bitter and powerful than aforementioned suggestions.

Yeah I'm about 150 lbs and if I drink a single 120 minute in like 20 minutes I will be a little tipsy. Drunk? No. But definitely feeling it.

A 12-oz. 120 Minute IPA has the same amount of alcohol as like 4-5 "American Lagers." Drink 4-5 Budweisers in 20 minutes and you will not be stone sober.
