Acting on a nostalgia itch, I started watching Zoids: Chaotic Century. Today I finished the last episode, something I wasn't expecting going in. I thought I would watch the first few episodes and be done with it; shuffling the good memories I have from watching it to the back of my mind until the next time I would dig them up for some unknown reason. I remember watching this as a kid and being completely enveloped in the world (enough that I wanted to buy and build all the toy models I could get my hands on). I remember how angry I was when the show aired every episode after another until it was only four episodes from being finished, but then something happened with the final four episodes, so Cartoon Network re-aired the show from the beginning. The show was stuck on this loop for awhile until one summer, and I remember this quite clearly, CN began advertising the final four episodes. I was so excited. After those final four episodes aired, I hadn't gone back to the series since. Remembering the good times I had watching the show, I decided to scratch a nostalgia itch...

To sum up my feelings: The show holds up really, really well.

Zoids: Chaotic Century, for a kids show, is very good with continuity, and has a lot of character development. It's the best animated show I've seen, though my experience with animated shows mainly stems from cartoons from my childhood. The show has a whole host of secondary characters that get their own time in the spotlight, and the show managed to bring them all together in the final ten episodes. Speaking of the final ten episodes...

They are just non-stop awesomeness. The final ten episodes have continuous (and satisfying) action that doesn't let up until the final moments of the last episode. They carry enough emotional weight that each battle is given just enough tension.

I think Zoids just might have the best-designed fighting machines ever. There are so many badass designs. It's like the designer(s) took the best parts of the animals they were basing the Zoids on and just ran with that for the whole machine. Motherfucking Blade Liger, yo.

And the music. So good. A few examples: Wildflowers (instrumental), "Jurassic Park", "A, Track 2", "B, Track 6", "B, Track 9". I'd list and find more, but most of these tracks don't have any names, at least from what I can find. I was lucky to find the first three listed above, because they're among my favorites.

No show is perfect, and Zoids: Chaotic Century is no exception. As I said before, the show, for a kids show, is very good with continuity, but it does have some hiccups. For some sets of two or three episodes, there are events (such as physical damage incurred by the protagonists' zoids) that happen in the previous episode but are forgotten about or not addressed in the next episode. This comes off as very jarring. Other annoyances I found was Van's tendency to scream a lot of his lines in the first season, and that made him quite annoying a lot of the times (plus his tendency to scream inside the cockpit of the Blade/Shield Liger, and he never stops doing that). While the show is light on filler episodes and is good with them overall, there are two that are particularly jarring because they happen between an episode that furthers the main storyline and the final ten episodes. Plus, over the course of the show, you have your serving of cheesy lines/scenes. Though they're easily overlooked most of the time.

Anyway, those are my feelings about the show. I wanna hear yours, GAF! Again, to sum up my feelings, if you saw this show as a kid and haven't seen it recently, watch it. You'll be surprised by how well it holds up.

Zoids was the shit back then

yes it was. This series was great but I really liked the zoids in New Century Zero. Shame it was only on cartoon network when i was young so i couldn't talk about with any of my friends when i was young

I remember waking up early in the morning just so i could make sure i watched the finale of this on time.. good times.

I remember watching this at like 6:00 or 6:30am in the morning before school started. I enjoyed this one and the racing Zoids series.

My brother and I were suuuuuper into this show back when it was on Cartoon Network (whichever series of it was). We went so far as to make our own Zoids out of legos. Mine was some sort of yellow and black tiger. I don't remember what he made.

We also had a model Liger. I think we still do, but some parts might be missing.

the first was Zoids New Century Zero, then Chaotic Century (and its sequel), then Fuzors. Genesis never made it over

Even though it has a proper English dub...

Chaotic Century's Girl in a box Plot and dystopian tone never really appealed to me, but New Century Zero captured my heart.

While the story was far lighter (arguably non-existent), the show had a better pacing within each episode, and the action scenes were far superior. Throw in a more light-hearted dub and a cool soundtrack, and you have the making of a great merchandise driven show.

Also, the Liger Zero > *.

I still want my own Berserk Fuhrer, dammit! And also, I wish they made more episodes of New Century Zero.
I watched New Century Zero before Chaotic Century because I remember enjoying it just as much. I'm less kind to it. The show didn't last for half as many episodes as Chaotic Century, and even then, it had run its course. New Century Zero doesn't hold up that well because it's lighter on the main plot elements, hardly does anything with any of the main characters, and the secondary characters were underutilized and not as good as those in Chaotic Century. The Zoid fights were just as good, though.

I really don't see how a "girl in a box" is a real sticking point when it only happens in one episode.

Aside from the action, New Century Zero is in every way inferior to Chaotic Century. It was literally the same concept in every episode repeated over and over again. *yawns*

New Century Zero is the only one to air in Canada, and thus is the only one I've ever seen. I found it to be pretty cool to see people use mechs not as another tool of war, but for entertainment.

Oh man Chaotic Century is one of my most fav shows of all time. I liked New Century but..... geez that did nothing to prepare me of the awesomeness of Chaotic Century. :O

Amazing story line that built and built and all came together at the end. Fantastic characters, zomg music. <3 <3 <3 I actually imported all the soundtracks from JPN at great cost way back in the day, back when it wasn't 'the norm'.

Now you got me thinking about that last episode, ugh I wanna go home and watch it now! So awesome.

LETS GO LIGER YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!

<3 Blade Liger.

You should check out Chaotic Century, man. It's totally worth it.

You can watch all the episodes here.

Yep, US voice actors confirmed they recorded the show, and it aired in a few Asian countries. No one recorded it though...

looking it up, it came on Toonami Jetstream. years before I started watching shit on the internet :(

man, I had some crushes with some of the characters:

Leena. love that crazy psycho bitch. had a huge crush on her. too few images exist for her though ;_;

This stuff looks kind of familiar. Does anyone know if it aired in Australia?

Yes, on Cartoon Network.

I watched in here in NZ on that and we just get/got the exact Aus CN channel.

I still have the toys set up in various spots around mine and my parents house lol, I have a Blade Liger and Geno Breaker next to my TV and a few other ones (main character ones really) and a freakin' Death Saurer too lol, took ages to make!

My brother has all the Liger Zero bits because that was his fav from New Century. I liked watching New Century again after Chaotic and seeing the references.

Agreed. I'm really glads that New Century Zero aired first in the US because otherwise it would have been a huge letdown after Chaotic Century.

The show never interested me when it was first on TV, and I only made it about 5 episodes in when I tried to watch it around 2 years ago. Based on the recommendations here I might try it again soon, but it starts out really slowly for me.

The Girl in a box thing was really jarring because it's one of those tropes you immediately recognise and kind of distract from the show. The fact I had recently rewatched Outlaw Star probably made things worse.

This is just a personal thing, but I tend to like my merchandise driven shows on the lighthearted side. It's why Yu-Gi-Oh GX's "I'm gonna have crazy adventures with cards from space and duelling monkeys!" appealed to me more than The original series with "The fate of the world rests on my next card!"

yo, the tasker sisters and naomi from new chaotic century were my shit

two lightning saix and the..... sniper....... raptor....

edit: i mean new century w/e

Only Gamecube game I loved besides Skies of Arcadia Legends.

I was a little too old for the show when it came out, but I did have some of the "westernized" toys named Robostrux when I was a kid.

Watching some stuff online now, the English opening is a crack up compared to the beautiful Japanese one lol. Typical of the time I guess.

Still remember it fondly though. :P <D

I have all 4(I think it was) Zoids games released on GameCube from Japan and 3 of the GBA RPG ones.

zoids-legacy.jpg

I got so excited about the English releases but when they eventually showed up my hype had died down so never really got into them as much as I did the JPN versions.

I always wished they were better but because it was Zoids 'it'll do' type thing came over me.

It was actually announced for Jetstream, but it never showed up on the service. The announcement for Jetstream was the last time Viz Media would ever talk about the series in the US again...

It's not just you. The show does start off really slow, but it picks up the page about halfway through the first season beginning with "The Longest Night of the Republic" (episode 17). All other episodes previous to that one help flesh out the regular and semi-regular characters and the relationships between each of them so you can see how they evolve over time, and plot points that will be expanded upon later in the series.

Also the last ten episodes of Chaotic Century have more satisfying action than any ten episodes of New Century Zero.
The Girl in a box thing was really jarring because it's one of those tropes you immediately recognise and kind of distract from the show. The fact I had recently rewatched Outlaw Star probably made things worse.
If you see a lot of shows previously like that, I can see how it would be a problem, but the only other show that used the "Girl in a Box" cliche that I've seen is Firefly, so it really wasn't that big of a deal with me. Hell, I didn't even make the connection until you posted that link! :lol.

I pretty much held Zoids New Century and Chaotic on the same level. Guardian Force wasn't memorable at all
Chaotic Century IS Guardian Force to me. They're one in the same. The second season of Chaotic Century (aka Guardian Force) only expands on the first, furthers the character development of every character, and fires everything on all cylinders at the end. S2 > S1 for me.

Edit: When I'm talking about the last ten episodes of Chaotic Century, I'm talking about the last ten episodes of S2. So satisfying.

i had these:

the last one was a gigantic toy though, not a model

i was obsessed with building them but my mom wouldnt let me get anymore :(

Oh man, I seriously loved the whole Civil War thing going on in Chaotic Century. Never really was in love with New Century due to the tournament thing, but seeing all that stuff used in the Civil War context was rad as hell.

You're lucky. Out of the examples on TVTropes, I've seen:

Outlaw Star
Code Geass
Gurren Lagann
Shinzo
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Code Lyoko
The Transporter

and Firefly being the most recent. Considering it's often the trigger to the plot, it becomes noticable rather fast.

Damn, didn't know this was old enough to be nostalgia'd about. Liger Zero was the best, though.
Zero > Schneider > Jager >>>>> Panzer

if Leena could actually hit something, there wouldn't be any need for Panzer :lol

I remember the fights between Raven and Van(sp?). I also remember not liking Van's older look because I thought his outfit was silly looking.

The lack of any footage of any of the Liger's special attacks from New Century on Youtube is annoying me ever so greatly now. :/

Wow, memories.

I woke up early some mornings to watch CC and I remember asking my parents to take NCZ while I was playing sports after school. Haha.

I have a ton of these models. A few broken pieces here and there from me being overly enthusiastic, but I got 'em all.

Never got to see either series in its entirety, but I liked the mech designs. Where can I see these series?
