1. In Bruges
2. Frost Nixon
3. Milk
4. The Dark Knight
5. Burn After Reading
6. Speed Racer
7. Gran Torino
8. Wall-E
9. Hellboy II
10. Slumdog Millionaire

Benjamin Button and Quantum of Solace are my biggest disappointments of 08. Button moreso, because of how mediocre, schmaltzy and, at times, just plain embarassing it was. Eagle Eye is the worst film of 08 i've seen. Goddamn awful, AWFUL movie.

Haven't seen The Wrestler, Let The Right One In, Revolutionary Road, Rachel Getting Married and some others yet, so my list will prolly change, but meh. Also, WTF? at Synecdoche, New York's aussie release date (May 9).

Worst year of the decade and yet, my top three are better than 99% of anything out in the last 15 years. Funny how that works out.

6. Revolutionary Road
7. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
8. Paranoid Park
9. Synecdoche, New York

I think 2008 > 2007 even though I think Assassination of Jesse James, Rataouille, Half-Nelson, I'm Not There, the Lives of Others, Once, No Country for Old Men, Sicko, Science of Sleep, and There Will Be Blood are some of the greatest films of the decade. Fuck, writing that out is making me want to go back and say it isn't now. :lol. The Academy Awards this year however is far worse though.

B-b-but your top-choice was a 2007 film!

Mine too, by the way.

1. Let the Right One In
2. The Wrestler
3. Gran Torino
4. Slumdog Millionaire
5. Changeling
6. Speed Racer
7. The Dark Knight
9. The Good The Bad and The Weird
10. Battle for Haditha (Don't think it came out here till 2008, if it did ten replace it with whatever is below)

Alternate 10. Cadillac Records

I've yet to see Milk or Frost/Nixon.

1. Waltz with Bashir
2. WALL·E
3. The Class
4. Man on Wire
5. The Dark Knight
6. Iron Man
7. The Wrestler
8. Three Monkeys
9. Tulpan
10. Let the Right One In

If My Winnipeg, Paranoid Park and Alexandra are allowed (they were all released in 2007 but didn't get a US release until 2008), the list would be:

1. Waltz with Bashir
2. WALL·E
3. My Winnipeg
4. The Class
5. Paranoid Park
6. Alexandra
7. Man on Wire
8. The Dark Knight
9. Iron Man
10. The Wrestler

Numbered lists are difficult for me, but here goes.

1) The Dark Knight
2) The Wrestler
3) In Bruges
4) Appaloosa
5) Let the Right One In
6) Milk
7) Gran Torino
8) Be Kind Rewind
9) Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
10) Iron Man

Agreed that it was generally a weak year. Strangely enough, I think if there was one triumph this year, it was the Hollywood blockbuster. I'm as big a film snob as any, but most of the smaller features just didn't spark me this year. Meanwhile, huge movies like The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hellboy 2, Tropic Thunder, & even The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came out swinging with well-crafted stories & some incredible performances (& in some cases relevant themes or satire, beautiful cinematography & scores, & more innovation than the Oscar darlings). The Reader, Doubt, Slumdog Millionaire & the like just left me flat. Outside of the Dark Knight (which I'm also recognizing for its massive cultural impact) & The Wrestler, nothing even came close to knocking me down the way There Will Be Blood did last year.

*I should note that I haven't yet seen Frost/Nixon, Good, Choke, or Che--all of which I think I'll like.

For shits:

Worst Films of the Year: Mad Money, The Bank Job, Repo! The Genetic Opera

Biggest Personal Disappointments: Slumdog Millionaire, Quantum of Solace

A Good Year For: Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Tropic Thunder), Josh Brolin (W., Milk), James Franco (Pineapple Express, Milk), theatre movies (Doubt, Frost/Nixon, In Bruges from the playwright Martin Macdonagh, & the inexplicable success of Mama Mia).

Most Badassery in One Film: Rambo. For its purposes, this movie is excellent.

Almost Made Its: Smart People, WALL-E, Tropic Thunder

Not Necessarily Great Films, But Entertaining as Fuck: Religulous, W. (Gran Torino is the grandaddy in this category, so much so that it makes my top ten list).

1. Wall-E
2. The Dark Knight
3. Slumdog Millionaire
4. Gran Torino
5. Frost / Nixon
6. Iron Man
7. In Bruges
8. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Yeah, it was a pretty weak year, but the top 5 are all quality in my eyes.

+1
Melodrama at its finest!!
On Changeling, nice to see someone else loved this too. A lot of people/critics took a dump on it, but I loved it. One of Eastwood's best IMO...

I haven't seen the following since I moved on from one of my movie reviewing positions at a newspaper and was inactive for awhile... but I have a new job for film so I'll be back on track.

Still need to see these films from 2008 (all movies I predict will get close to being in my top 10):
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Gran Torino, Slumdog Millionaire, Burn After Reading, Night in Rodanthe, In Bruges, Changeling, Milk, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Frost/Nixon, Rachel Getting Married, Revolutionary Road, Last Chance Harvey, The Wrestler, Happy-Go-Lucky, I've Loved You So Long, Frozen River, Encounters at the End of the World, Waltz with Bashir, The Class

6. No Country for Old Men
7. Knocked Up
8. The Assassination of Jesse James by Coward Robert Ford
9. Into The Wild
10. There Will Be Blood

From 2007, I still haven't seen:
The Visitor, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Once, The Lives of Others, 4 Days 3 Weeks & 2 Days, La Vie en Rose, Away From Her, or The Black Book
- All of these movies could potentially get into my top 10.

I like my Top 10 from 2007 better than 2008 so far, but that could change as I watch more 2008 films I missed out on.

373 for TDK so far
372 for Wall•E

I'm adding these in my head, so the actual count's probably off.

Considerably.

Forget what I said earlier, it's not going to be close at all. :lol

1. Speed Racer
2. In Bruges
3. The Chaser
4. Milk
5. The Dark Knight
6. The Black Balloon
7. Let the Right One In
8. Frost Nixon

Still wanna see The Class, Departures, Gomorra, $9.99, and Synedoche, New York.
