Except the redesign may come March 2013, and by then people may actually have titles they want to play. Nintendo is likely to push for support of both single analog and dual analog control schemes, much like Wii games often offering numerous controls options.
Maybe single analogs are phased out at some point, and Nintendo risk the market split. It'd be a dangerous move, and I don't think they plan to do it in 2012 at least. Nintendo didn't even mention the add-on at the conference, and afterwards, they didn't mention it working with any first party games.
As the moment its all speculation, of course. I think we all have very different perceptions as to what we think Nintendo is most likely planning.
I think that the bulky add-on they've introduced is not practically marketable for the length of the generation, it screams "stop gap" and "temporary". I can't forsee any scenario in which the first revision of the 3DS is designed to be compatible with it, as this would restrict their redesign options.
I also cannot see Nintendo advertising such an ugly, unwieldy attachment and overtly nullifying any sleekness and aesthetic dignity the 3DS has. Therefore to me the most likely scenario is a 3DS XL with the second analogue built in. If I was a betting man I'd expect it to be announced at any point between the start of the 2012 business year and E3, but as always Nintendo are hard to predict.
I'm also taking into account that 01net were spot-on about the cradle, which was a development no one saw coming. Hell, they were crucified by the internet for even suggesting something so absurd. They clearly have inside information, and their assertion of a revised 3DS model should not be overlooked.
I'd absolutely recommend against buying right now, but then all I see in terms of software is a remake of a Zelda I've completed six times, and potentially good games on the horizon. All I'm seeing in terms of hardware is a model that's still not inexpensive and is likely to be significantly outdated next year. Regarding the games though, if the current library appeals to the OP more than it appeals to me, then my recommendation might not be appropriate.
