20D is a much, much better camera than the XT or the XTi. $719 used is such a freaking steal. With the money you save you can get a nice lens depending on your budget. If you can't spend much more just get the 50mm 1.8. It's a great sharp lens, fast, great color and contrast. You can't go wrong with the 20D for this price.

Great, throw a wrench in my system after I had settled on the D80.

Before I start looking things up, what does the D20 have as an edge over, say, the D80? Pros/cons? *starts researching wildy*

Pics I took for assignment but didnt pick as an entry.

EDIT: Rehosted better quality and more pics.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joates/ Flickr account with larger sizes. Now looks like Ill have to change my assignment entry. Descions, Descions....

if you've never had a SLR before a XT or XTi would be enough I wager anyways. I paid $370 for my XT body, that's a lot cheaper then I could have got a 20D one for.

Is there anyway to retain a better quality to the pictures when uploading them?

if you want to use Photobucket, resize them yourself first so you can set a low compression level, but otherwise use Flickr or something.

Generally I like to make a distinction in what I'm shooting, so I try to keep what I'm focused on clear and crisp, while the rest of the photograph becomes blurred. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't. I think it works well in the third picture (as the text shifts focus throughout the picture) and doesn't matter too much in the others. I have to admit, I am not a very professional photographer and forget things easily, and it's harder to change the f.stop on my camera so it does not change very frequently (same for the iso).
Interesting, I used to do a lot of nature photography with the camera on a tripod, lens stopped way down, and long exposures to get the maximum depth of field, and that probably affects the way I shoot now, and perceive other photohgraphs. Different styles, but I like your stuff.

Nevermind, Yuna. Hadn't noticed it was used. I never really feel comfortable buying used stuff, in general. =|

Considering it's tested its actually safer than buying new.

I'm sure it's safe, but SHOULD anything else pop up, who knows.

Plus I like keeping mys tuff perfect, and if there's GONNA be a scracth or a ding, I'll have the story behind it.

=\

These shots are nowhere near the originals and it shows :(

Your pics seem to get compressed some more or something...I was going to mention. I dunno. Try imageshack or something - just upload one image and post it next to the photobucket one to see if it makes a difference.

Well, I think its just due to the fact that I resize and save in MSPaint :lol

I Resized and saved the one in the assignment thread in GIMP with a higher JPEG setting and I think it turned out better.

I just like the ease of Paint because it takes me ~5 seconds to do it, but they turn out like complete shit :(

Is there any other way I could do that is fast and efficient?

Sure it's a better camera, but it's always going to be a personal decision. I mean an EOS-1D is better yet, but obviously isn't a good option for someone just looking to upgrade from a point and shoot. The 20D is bigger, heavier, used, doesn't have a built in dust removal system, has a smaller LCD screen, has older firmware, has fewer megapixels, and, perhaps most importantly to me, wasn't available at the store where I had $300 in gift certificates.

Plus, the XTi/400D has the side benefit of exposing your local camera shop as the elitist poofters they are when you ask about accessories for it.

here's some crap i took in japan last fall

these were the first pictures i took with my digital rebel xt (got it like a week before i left for tokyo). also first shot at photoshop processing afterwards, so some of the color saturation is overdone and makes things look fake

Oh come on now. An EOS 1d is over $3k, thats no where near the cameras on topic. The anti dust in the xti is a joke and everyone knows thats. Smaller LCD is fine, you shouldn't be using the lcd to chimp your photos anyways, a cameras lcd does not show you the correct colors or exposure. You should only be using the lcd to change options and to look at the histogram, speaking of options the xti has poor controls, no 2nd wheel and a poor menu system. Mega pixels don't mean much anymore in this category, its just an e-penis thing. Either camera can print much larger photos than either one of you will most likely ever print while owning these cameras. Xti is tiny and feels like a toy, the 20d is made of better material and has some weight to it.

BTW, Don't feel bad about having a cheap camera man. Keep taking shots with what you have.

Is there a tool in Photoshop that would make the grass in the first photo look greener? (Fixed now)

holy crap your phone has an impressive camera
you can increase the color saturation of greens in the grass in the first photo...though i don't remember what menus thats under off hand since i don't have ps on this computer

Cheers bggrthnjsus. Selected the grass area and went to Image->Adjustments->Colour Balance. I just wanted to emphasise the green with the orange of the buildings and the blue of the sky.

I took these today. granted i could have got a lot better pictures but it was 60 degrees out I'll de damned if i was going to "waste it" walking around taking pictures, I went home and went on a bike ride.:D

i prefer film. and i was just referring to my om-1 which is about 30 dollars. i have a slew of other cameras, like an a-1. go me!

I like film myself, but with digital you don;t have to worry about wasting film and stuff, so in that sense it's 100% worth it.

btw i added you on flickr, it took me forever to figure out how.

I have a question about my S3 IS, some other owners might be able to help.

Is there any reason one cant use manual focus when in macro mode? I do not understand this at all because it is usable in supermacro mode but not standard macro mode. I really dont like this because I cant seem to consistently get the autofocus to lock in where I want it in macro mode and cant seem to adjust it all. I searched google but came up empty handed on the issue. Can anyone tell me why this is restricted like it it?

What phone do you have? i don't really want one but my dad wants to get me one. i'd rather get one with a good camera.

It's the LG Shine. 2MPixels, some colour effects, white balance options etc. You can get phones with >3MPs and possibly more features, if the camera on the phone is a major buying factor for you.

mrklaw; tell me the 70-200 F/4L is sex and i'll buy one right now.

I'm not mrklaw, but I am a 70-200f4l owner. This lens is sex, buy it now.

Seriously, looking through my favourites folder, and a high proportion are captured through this lens. Colour and sharpness are top notch - for me, it's nearly like getting that punch without doing any post processing.

What is the best photo-hosting site on the net? It seems most of them have some sort of free service where you can only upload a very limited number of photos, but charge like $25 a year for unlimited photos etc. I've seen photo.net, flickr (yahoo), picasa (google), and maybe a couple others. I would've gone with Picasa but I hate how difficult they make it to view full-size versions of the photos. Maybe I'll go with flickr.

Testing, clearly. You passed, A+.

Remind me not to post after giving blood as well.

Seriously, this picture is basically everything I aim for in photography. Nice.

Pictures I took for a job. Most of them are just shots of things, but I thought these came out pretty nice. Oh, and the lighting sucked so I had to play around with them in iPhoto, more than I'd have liked to.

canon_70200.jpg

Well, that is even better, but it's twice the price. I would get that if I could. The one I have is the non-Is version. Relatively cheap for the quality (US$600? - of coruse in NZ, it costs closer to us$800-1000. :( But I like the pictures.

GKB: Ah, Isee. It was too early in the morning. Here's the deal, I'll give you some blood, but you give me some coffee. Also, good on you for giving blood.

I recently picked up the Minolta 70-210 f/4, and while I'm sure the IQs are different in whichever way, it's a really really really nice focal length and speed. I haven't used the Canon lens you guys are talking about but I'm sure everyone can agree that have this sort of reach is empowering! Recommended A++ lens, everybody should get one!

I got my tripod in today, which is exciting, too!

Having done a good deed I've treated myself to my first 'L'. £350 for a used copy which isn't bad for UK prices. Should keep its value as well should I ever need to sell it on. Good times!

Blatantly be wanting the IS version followed by the F/2.8 IS as soon as I get it though. Such is life.

What exacty did you treat yourself to?

Either way, can't wait to see what you do with it.

Ahaha you just did it.. You're going to get it and love it.. You won't be able to stop. You'll keep buying more lens.. Oh just 1 more L... oh I think I need another L..just one more, i really mean it this time. Shoot I don't have this range covered I need another l.
Welcome to the world of debt!

Took my K100d to Zoo Atlanta Monday and got some pics of the baby panda. Most of the shots were done with my 50-200mm f4/5.6 lens. I was using (what turned out to be) a cruddy polarizer to try to compensate for all of the reflections, but it's hard to get a good angle in a room full of squealing kids and the attendant soccer moms. I set the camera to auto bracket and just hoped for the best. I would have gleefully killed for a curtain or something to block out the light. I ended up taking over 1400 shots all over the zoo that day-my shutter's still smoking. I did a little auto-balance and resizing and trimming; couldn't really post-process as my main rig is having it's motherboard RMA'ed.

Aww, that panda's adorable!

It's been a while since I've posted in here, but I've finally got a couple of new shots that I like!
