GAF Photography 2008: Assignment Thread 50: Under Construction

First Choice: guess - Obviously there's a lot of similarities to AirBrian's entry, but this one is so much more thematically focused, it stands above the rest.

Runner Up: Papi - This has such an interesting look to it. Probably because no one in that lighting situation ever takes the time to properly set their WB, so we're not used to seeing it done right.

Honorable Mentions:
Always-honest - I'll be honest, Always-honest, since I haven't lurked in the quarterly threads, I wasn't quite sure to make of you these last few assignments. All I ever saw of you was "I'll make it next time!" and naked Hasselhoff. Now I see what I've been missing. Great shot, although I think a deeper depth of focus would've helped. It just seems to me that you'd want the entire spider in focus.

mrkgoo - At first, I wondered how this tied in to the theme. "It's just a bunch of tools... oh."

Other Comments:
-xBerserker- - Impressive amount of work. I agree with Lucky Forward about wanting to see the cranes fill the frame.

Tf53 - I like this so much better than a similar shot I did a few assignments ago. The lower fifth is a bit odd, I think I would've cropped it out.

AirBrian - The other buildings kind of steal the thunder of the one under construction.

Lucky Forward - While I can appreciate the miserable conditions, I can't help but feel as though there was a missed opportunity, compositionally speaking, for a more dynamic shot.

Xun - I'm sure I'm missing something totally obvious, but I don't quite get the connection to the theme.

Squirrel Killer - Really interesting subject, I didn't know those were still being made. Looks like a tough subject to shoot with the construction still going on, but I really like the composition you got there and the contrast between wood/pipes against the bright color of the ladder/scaffold.
It wasn't so much the construction that made the subject difficult, it was the getting the courage to walk down the center aisle of the church, plop down, and start shooting. I'm far too rule-abiding and polite for on-location shoots. Fortunately, the crew working on it was as friendly as could be.

Squirrel Killer - For some reason I feel that the central wooden beam is throwing off your compostion - it's extremely prominent in the middle, but I don't see what purpose it's serving. If that weren't there I think I probably would have voted for yours - just every now and then there's something that makes me not understand a photo. Great work, though.
Thanks for compliment. The wooden beam is actually a wood pipe that's about to hoisted into place somewhere behind the pipes on the right. You're absolutely right, it's not really serving any purpose.

10 entries? Could this be our most exclusive assignment ever???
Assignment #22: Food Porn also only got 10 entries.

yeah, i was going to send in my first photograph in the "selling a product to the masses" thread.
I had an idea for a big music festival i was going to (the food stands with lines of people).. but they wouldn't let me in with my camera....... :(.. i was real dissapointed cause i thought it could have been a nice entry.

but i'll be trying from now on ;P

I'm the same way...for the few minutes I was at the ramp construction site, I'm thinking, "Don't get caught...don't get caught..." I drive by that construction area every weekday (it's a big, sprawling project) and I see all of the great possibilities I missed, just because I couldn't (or wouldn't) wander around freely.
