GAF Photography 2009 - Q4

Not open for further replies.
Photos taken at a Zoo in Rotterdam (Netherlands) on november 15th. Waited a long time before postprocessing them because i wanted to calibrate my laptop screen first.

I noticed a lot of photos i made looked really different on another screen.

All photos were shot with a Canon 450D and a 50mm 1.8/f. No Filter but i did use a Sunhood (Also because i lost the lenscap, so i use it as protection when i carry it around and in my bag).

If you click on the images you can see the bigger pic.

Taken through glass

A little bit cropped but this bird just wouldn't move, i was at 30cm distance i guess.:D

For some reason there were purple edges around the pelican which i had to edit out.
Anyone know the cause?

Comments are very welcome indeed!

Culex and aidan, thanks. :) Yes maybe I'll submit it.

Kawaii: That polar bear pic is epic. The dark skies/clouds remind you of the grim future facing these animals. :( Also like the short DOF.

The purple edge is probably what is called purple fringing, it can happen in high contrast situations when shooting with wide apertures.

Also, I meant to mention futureman in my comments on the previous page: I thought your balloon shot was great! At first, I thought it was some lens effect, like a lensbaby, or zooming during exposure. Then I noticed you falling over and had to laugh. :loll I had to ask - where you 'falling' on purpose? If so, is there a meaning behind that shot?

It's for a video I'm doing. There's 60 shots like it, they are going to flip by real fast. Here's another:

I wish I would have done a set up shot. The balloon was taped to a light stand. The balloon was about 4 feet from the wall. I had my Nikon SB26 lighting the wall with various colored gels. Then I had a light in a beauty dish w/ grid lighting me with the guitar. I actually wanted to do something more elaborate, but I was doing this during the day on Friday (my day off), so most of my friends were at work or whatever and couldn't help. I set the self-timer to 2 seconds, I'd hit the shutter, then jump to my position.

Some kind of chromatic aberration. Happens around high contrast edges like a bright white pelican and a dark background. It can be exaggerated or minimized depending on your shooting aperture and any kind of post processing you do.

Second snowfall in this area (first was in October), decided to go out and capture some of it.

Photoshoot in an elevator!

2009 has been the "Year of Photos" for me. I've taken around 10,000 shots this year, I've bought Lightroom 2, Sigma 50mm lens, Canon 5DII, Nikon flash, Alien Bees flash unit (plus modifiers, light stand, wireless flash system), I took two classes (studio lighting 1 and 2). I aim to top all this in 2010.

Gah, you guys are killing me with the awesome. Kawaii, I especially love the polar bear tiger shots. A pair of new ones from me. I tried adding a border to see what kind of effect it might add, but they really don't show up well. Dunno, I like them, but I screwed up due to accidently leaving the ISO higher than it should've been, so there's more noise than I intended.

She's Part of a Fundraising Organization called The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The Photo shoot was for an advertisement of their yearly "Red Dress" event. It's a High end fundraiser in Las Vegas where everyone (boys and girls) wear red dresses to the dinner and cocktail party. They have a construction theme this year.

Some ideas for "series", all landscape stuff, I like to keep things quite muted and not too dramatic in terms of light, shadow, or colour. I guess England is pretty good for that :D
I aim for definition, so I much prefer having them as prints than like uploading on flickr and seeing them on screen.

The last one was taken in very heavy rain, hence the blur, but I quite like how it turned out. I hope this isn't too much.

Nice. I love CDHK, too. I bought a Canon P&S for my wife, but they only have a beta version supporting it. I'll have to try it out on my brother's old camera.

Here are some photos from my trip to Brussels yesterday. First time I took photos with a 35mm lens in a city.

First time i saw this i said, chick in an elevator, cool.
But I keep looking at this image, there is something about it that i just like from the motionblur of her scarf to her smile. Great capture.

Funny, mrkgoo I bought my roommate that exact ipod nano last year for christmas.

Seriously, some amazing stuff on this page.

Nothing fancy from me this time, but I thought it was neat how I could use my 17-55ID/7D combo for a pretty nice hand-held product shoot (high iso and IS under a dim room light).

EF-S 17-55IS, 55mm, f/2.8, 1/30s, iso1600

Excellent image of Seattle skyline

Nice. I'm guessing a tripod + sunset + a series of exposures at timed intervals, then stacking the images in layers from full night to barely sunset, then just trimming away from said layers to produce the effect, then flattening the image.

Am I close? I just wanna make sure the photography part of my brain hasn't turned completely into crap yet.

These shots were taken at Kobe Japan last night.

Shot with the Lumix GF1 and 14-45 lens.[/QUOTE]

Wow that's incredible. The third picture blows my mind.

I'm jealous of everyone's high ISO shots. Shooting RAW on my Canon A570 gives me a lot better control over the final image, and noise reduction software helps, but even with that anything over ISO200 is borderline unusable at typical resolutions.

Thinking of maybe doing an upgrade. What are the leading point & shoots these days when it comes to image quality? Something with manual controls is ideal.

Might be outta my league here in Photography GAF, but what the hey! Here's some shots I took:

I haven't done any post processing outside of unsharp mask, and all of them were shot in raw (obviously w/tweaks to be made later). Definitely interested in hearing some tips / critiques / suggestions!

Thanks :)

Definitely not! I love the warm tones in the second image. Nicely composed too.

Thanks :) I generally take far more average shots than good ones though :lol

I shot the second image quite a few times, trying to get different tones and exposures, and this was by far my favorite. I have another that I did that's slightly under exposed and a bit cooler, going to toy with it and see how it works as a B&W shot.

Mrpliskin, i like the first and second alot, although the composition is a bit off in the second photo, i think. The mood is great though.

Timbuktu, i really like the Suffolk and Hadspen Series!

And yeah, mrnorush, the picture is great!

I made these selfportraits for a school assignment about identity, the idea is to use these photos as a cover for three other parts of the assignment, so i need to make one more photo. But i just wanted to share these anyway, i was planning on participating in the assignment thread but i can't make the third photo on time.

I shot them without any help, just using a tripod and the lights in my room, no fancy remotes or flashes. So also focusing on myself without me being in the shot yet. And the one on the couch required one hell of a strange setup because i wanted myself between the word Roy and Dendro on the mirror. Click and Clikk.

(Oh and yeah, my entire kitchen looks like that, all scribbeled over with permanent marker, if anyone has any idea how to fix it, please elaborate, i payed 900 euros lien on my room, which i probably wont get back if the kitchen stays like this.)

kawaii - I like the shots and the set-up. I do think it is interesting that you are doing an assignment on identity, though, and you look like every other scenester I have ever seen. :( That's cool if being a part of your identity is following the trend of the anti-trend, but it made me laugh and lament at the same time.

cool looking pictures, though.

EDIT - don't mean to be a prick at all by my comments. One cannot judge a book by its cover.

So my wife and I are super poor, she asked me what I wanted and I told her a polarizing lens for my camera. Are they as good as they say?

Do you take a lot of landscape/nature photos? If so, yes.
