It's dust and mud
It's the roar of a Sunday crowd
It's the white in his knuckles
The gold in the buckle
He'll win the next go 'round

Totally. Except for the processing part. For example this image was took forever to process and a lot of saving photoshop from itself. It was HYUGE.

Btw, an osx photoshop tip if photoshop starts to hang during a process, open up activity monitor and run a sample process on photoshop. After it runs it photoshop will unhang. Its weird, but over the past few weeks this has saved my ass countless times.

Still gotta composite this thing, not looking forward to that...

How many lenses do most of you carry around? Also, are majority of the shots you post just you, the camera and the subject, or are shots that require tripods, reflectors, set up time and preparation the norm?

I'm curious because many of the shots in the photography threads are professional looking. I know a lot of posters here are professional photographers, but i'm sure there are tons of photos taken by amateurs which have turned out great as well. Just wondering how much preparation you ordinarily take for photos you post here.

Well, if I'm going out to an outdoors place that I know I'm going to need a range of lenses, I take my 18-55, 55-200, and 1.8 35mm prime.

In that situation I'll use the 18-55 80% of the time, 55-200mm 15%, and maybe 5% of my Prime. Prime is a just in case lens, really.

If I'm goint to be shooting indoors or at night/low light, I'll slap the 35mm prime on and call it a day. Foot zoom will get me almost all my indoors shots and the 1.8 will get my low light, and I'm not carrying my camerpack on my back.

I also always have my SB-200 speedlight flash with me, because it's so cheap for the excellent flash it provides over the on-camera flash, and it can be angled up for bouncing the flash from the ceiling when indoors.

I have a cheap $20 tripod that I just got, and I haven't even used it yet. Never used a reflector or anything like that, I'm not near to that level yet! :lol

I usually carry two lenses either my 12-60 f2.8 and 50-200 f2.8 or 12-60 and 150mm f2.0 with my doubler that gets me plenty of reach and covers a large chunk of the focal range i want with just two lenses.
And i'm only doing available light photography so my kit is pretty small. I carry a tripod when im hiking but i dont always use it, just depends.

im always going out with one lense. hate to switch it. i'm trying to get the best of one lens.
in moment i went only once out with the tripod. dont have reflector's etc.

Most of the shots, that I post here at least, are planned out. I bring:

Cameras

The Nikon setup, which is camera, 18-200 (great for scouting locations or playing with a scene through the viewfinder), 24-70 and 70-200 nikkor.

The Mamiya 645afd with the 80mm lens, love that focal length on medium format.

Lighting

Elinchrom rx600s. Most of the work can be done with two lights and reflectors. Use the skyport proprietary triggers (they integrate wonderfully and are super reliable in a shoot). Used either bare, softboxes, modified softboxes.

Gear wise thats it. A light setup but it for 90% of shoots its more than enough.

Then after the shoot its post-processing starting in lightroom and moving over to photoshop then back to lightroom for organization and print/use prep.

Pets are great to photograph. They're like mini portraits but neither you nor the subject feel any pressure or self-consciousness. I'm sure better photographers feel this way all the time, but I'm not there yet (for people).

A mixed bag.

Whiterock again. God do I need to practice some more BADLY.

Story about girl in shots.

Photography is a wonderful thing. I met a very nice girl today on the dock. I introduced myself and we talk as I shot photos. Her friend decides she wants to take some photos with the girl I met making a pose on one of the piers. I snap a photo of her making the pose. I blinked and all of a sudden i see her losing her balance. Next thing I know she has fallen into the lake.

I feel so freaking bad, but I laughed really hard as I pulled her out of the lake.

Note to self: Keep a towel in car just in case girl I just met falls into lake.

Played around with my white balance before I took the shot. I did not change white balance in Aperture cause I thought it look kind of cool.

Decided to try framing my shot with some tall grass and a tree to see what a different effect it had on the picture.

Cool story! Meeting girls via photography ... genius!

That shot of her on the pole is great!

Also, I know this is mean to introduce you to, but...

You have a dirty sensor here...here...here...here...and here...at least. If you want to see it, take a picture of something at the smallest aperture.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! :(

Well at least I met a cute girl. Well thankfully they're not too incredibly noticable but thanks for the heads up mrkgoo.

Ok so give it to me straight. What should I do to get it cleaned/where?

Edit: Fuck now I see it in every freaking shot. :( Oh well, not a huge deal, they dont completely ruin the photos.

Black_mamba: Love that second-the-last one. Nice and clean with pleasing curves.

Inquisitor: I'm just obsessed about it. It's not big deal, you can retouch those things real easily.

If you have to clean, I recommend just a blower at first - it's a harrowing experience looking down at your naked sensor (although it's not really naked, there's a piece of glass in front of it).

Yeah, I'll prob just use the blemish tool in aperture to remove them. I can probably use the blemish tool to remove that slight glare to the left in that photo too.

I found it interesting how much changing the white balance changed the tone of that picture. It went from being a warm scene in Texas to something feeling more frigid. I'm definitively taking note of the effect it had.

Edit:

Oh and for another funny story from today a girl who looked close to my age and her brother walked up to the pier I was shooting on. I was casually listening as I tried to focus in on a boat when I heard her say " Hey! I have been reading a lot into photography, I shoot almost full manual! I need to turn down the ISO a bit" I looked up and saw she had a point and shoot, yet she at least was starting to get an initial grasp of how digital cameras work under the "auto" mode every uses.

I smiled cause I realized I am not the only crazy one muttering about ISO and aperture these days. :lol

Plus I have realized being a decent shot with a decent camera = shot with the ladies. I have had 2 girls I know ask if I will do a photoshoot of them. My decision to switch hobbies from gaming to photography is looking better and better. :lol

The reverse of mrkgoo's advice also holds, to a point. Shoot wide open. Shoot in Aperture Priority and keep it cranked to f/1.8, 2.8 if you want it a little sharper. The dust will still degrade the IQ a little, but the spots won't be as defined as they are a smaller apertures.

In post, the heal brush is your friend, just size the brush so you completely cover the dust spot

Great shots Black_Mamba. :)

mrnorush: Epic, I've always wanted to go to one of those "temples". 2nd shot is great.

The_Inquisitor: Get a blower and try that, but soon you will probably get a dust/dirt particle that will refuse to move no matter how hard to blow, so I would recommend to look into getting a Arctic Butterfly, I have one and it works great. Its not as big of a rip off as those "wet cleaning/swabs" solutions.

Hello photo-people,

My friend wants to sell me his Sony Alpha 200 for a very good price. (I think it's a good price, how much does it cost now?) He hasn't used it a lot, so I think it's a good deal. But you know more about camera's than I do.

Is this a good camera to start shooting pictures?

Its a very good camera to start out with (I started with the A100 which I still use for macro. A2 has a similar body so although its all plastic its very durable and light).. And it is a better choice than the newer A230, because the A200 has a proper grip. :)

What lens are you getting with it?

Not sure about the lens. But apart from the lens, I guess it would be a good buy then? :)

Amazing tonality and composition in those, Mamba. Love the square format too. Love that you're shooting with the 500 C/M, at some point in my life I wish to acquire it and have it be my primary film body.

These are with an old Hasselblad 500 C/M with different kinds of film.

Well, that's pretty hardcore.

I have one; my father used to shoot with that but i am too scared to even try opening it. Besides, i can't even remember how to unfold the mirrors and lens on its top :D

from a wedding i was shooting today in downtown orlando... i was mainly doing video (as a test run) with my 7D, thought i shouldn't waste the moment, had to capture this with the 4 other photographers....

now, there are threads in which people show their cats and dogs, but i couldn't find a 'show pics of your macaw' thread and i wasn't sure i should have started one.
I'm posting here instead

I developed raw's using an old lousy lcd monitor at my parents', so i am not sure about colors and brightness especially, i am afraid they're too dark

eso76: nice macaw, the 1st one spooks me out.

Another one from the 'Mugging' scene shoot. Will be processing the medium format versions soon.

Im posting these and other stuff on my tumblr, nickdifilippo.tumblr.com which will be replacing my blog (its a great tool).

b) My brain is breaking trying to figure out how you do this.
my guess would be either one try with high FPS and then blending them in photoshop or one shot each till you get exactly the right one and then blend them in photoshop.
tripod is a must to get the rest of the frame the same for each shot.
