Photo dump from recent vacation. I still have a problem with resizing / outputting jpegs from Lightroom. Not getting the smoothness or sharpness that I want. Fëanor's photos are a good example of what I'm shooting for

Hi folks,

I don't have much invested in Camera. I have a Canon T2i and a 85mm 1.8 lens.

I'm looking at moving to full frame for portrait and sports.

I cannot afford the Canon 5D Mark 3. I've also used Nikons recently.

Would you recommend Nikon D700 or Canon 5D Mark 2? Both can be had for around $1400.

If you already have Nikon lenses, Nikon. Canon lenses, Canon. Both of them are excellent cameras, the D700 having more focus points than the Canon. Other than that, it's really up to you and how the camera feels in your hands.

I went to the orchestra practice this week (and concert), and took some pictures (cant share them yet), but heres a little taste :

It was pretty cool, and the place was amazing.

Btw, where do you guys share your pictures ? Usually i just share them here, but i'd like to know more places to share. Also, is there a place where we can buy/sell pictures in full rez or so ?!

If you're interested in sports photography, consider the frames per second in continuous shooting mode. The Canon 5D is 3.9 fps, the Nikon D700 is 5 fps. I used to shoot with a 20D that shot 5 fps, and I was surprised how much you could miss between frames at that speed when shooting action...often I'd get a shot just before the peak of the action and one just after, but missed the "just right" moment. I currently have a 7D (cropped frame) that shoots 8 fps and it really makes a difference. Of course, I'm thinking about getting a full-frame body sometime myself, but I think I would hang on to my 7D for action.

Recent visit to the park with my daughter....

What's with RAW format?
I thought I'd try it, so set camera to do RAW + JPEG.... thinking RAW was a better format? But when I loaded them up on my computer, the colours looked faded, picture looked blurred... What am I doing wrong?

RAW is, basically, the purest photograph your camera can produce. It saves exactly what the sensor sees, whereas jpg photos have some post-processing applied to them by the camera. JPEGs generally look alright out of the camera, but lose some flexibility because you're camera is deciding how best to process the photo. RAW gives you the greatest post-processing options, but generally requires as least basic photoshop/lightroom work before the photos look presentable.

This is a decent explanation of RAW vs. Jpeg: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/u-raw-files.shtml

RAW is the way the camera saw the image before processing it to JPG. There is much more data, but that data needs to be worked with properly using a good program. I only use Photohop, and many people swear by Adobe lightroom.

RAW can be a pain in the butt to work with at first, but once you get used to it, you'll never go back to JPG.

Edit: I should refresh the page before posting. :)

recent panorama from my weekend hike taken with a note 3. The quality come out surprisingly good and it's much faster and easier to do panorama on a phone compare to a dslr. The sky is overblown because it was pouring.

I just recently started shooting RAW and I will never go back to just JPEG for any serious shoots.

I have a d5000 and for a while I was really unhappy with the sharpness of my images. I thought it was just my poor skills combined with my equipment but it turns out it was mostly just my in camera jpeg processing, even with sharpening turned up a bit. I have some shots I took earlier in the year that I was really happy with but I don't have RAW versions of them and it just eats at me.

I love playing with white balance and exposure levels with RAW and saving out as .tif files retains maximum sharpness.

So yeah, definitely try shooting RAW.

i'm having such a hard time on what to replace my kit lens with. i need a good walk around lens.

Either the canon 17-55, tamrom 17-50, sigma 17-50, or the sigma/tamrom 24-75.

I used to be RAW or never but ever since I got my X-E1 I pretty much shoot jpeg only because jpeg quality of this camera is mindblowing, and Provia film simulation gives me the look I want anyway.

Love your colours. What camera?

I just started using Lightroom 4. Raw is your best friend. Particularly how well it holds the color red.

I had the opportunity to do some maternity photos for some good friends. It's a fun challenge, and such an interesting time in a couple's life to capture.

That is such a good photo!

But I usually just share all my stuff on Flickr. I've loved it there since I started using it a couple years ago. I'm not too sure about buying and selling stuff though. Sorry. I'd kind of like to find a good place to do that soon too.

I'd forgotten about taking this in Belgium over the summer. I looked at the edit history and settings expecting to see all non-reds desaturated but there was nothing, in the end the only colour I desaturated was red as they were originally crushed. I feel it lost a little punch in doing so though - does anyone know how I could have preserved the "top" red while reclaiming some of the detail?

So you want to bring the reds back with out blowing them out? Do you have a RAW file, or is this the only version you have?

Edit: Do you have Photoshop or just Lightroom?

If you still have the RAW file, then you'll just need to reopen it in Lightroom and tweak your colors back to where they belong. Editing done to RAW files don't alter the original.

Thank you =)

Yeah, gonna start sharing on Flickr as well, but would be good to know where to make some (even if very little) money out of some pictures, would help aquiring new gear etc.

Hadn't used my camera for ages so pleased with how this night shot came out seeing as I didn't use a tripod for it. Really must get back into using my camera properly and get out on Sunday for the last night of the Lumiere festival here

I'm constantly amazed at the stuff I see in these threads, GAF has some incredibly talented photographers! I'm finally going to start posting in here.

Well, here are some pictures from a big football game I shot on Saturday night. First time ever shooting a sporting event and I had a blast. Getting to use the school's awesome 300 f/2.8 wasn't such a bad deal either.

These are great shots man! I would love to have something like that to work with. Great work.

So I have a small question, right now I have an account in a different site, but how is the new flickr free stuff? Is it good, better to organize? any opinions.

I have smugmug right now

Shooting again with my DSLR, a Nikon D5000, I've been looking at different lens, specifically a wide angle lens and was looking for any recommendations (I'll ask the megathread, but I figured I ask here too).
