GAF Plays: Shenmue 1 and 2

So I played about 1-2 hours so far.
Not a whole lot's happened yet, but I'm still ok with that so far.

I was button mashing a lot to master some of those random moves though.

If you lose a fight (QTE), but it lets you redo it, are there any penalties for it?
I was walking into one of the bars, and randomly got attacked by 2 guys, didn't react fast enough the first time. I succeeded by the second try though.

Providing I can find the time to play the games, I'm in. Can't wait to beat up those school girls again!

I've posted some of these images before in the Video Game Wallpapers & Hi-Res Artwork thread but since this seems as good a place as any for this type of thing, here's a load of Shenmue stuff that might take your fancy.

Also, here is a link to the Project Berkley video with a stupidly high bitrate and soft subs. Or you can just watch it on Youtube if you can't be arsed downloading it.

Man, that's tempting. I got so much to do this weekend, but I never did finish Shenmue I and I brought the PAL Shenmue II at Otakon last year. Now this thread...maybe next week. I've put it off for so long, but the hunt for Lan Di begins anew!

So YuSu retired? God bless that man. He along with Miyamoto are responsible for many fond game memories during my child hood up to now! And he deserves every bit of it! Guess the least I can do now is rediscover his magnum opus.

This website was set up a little while ago as an attempt by someone to play the Shenmue games over this year for the first time ever. He did a video stream of his first couple hours with it, along with a 24 hour Dreamacast marathon of all sorts of games. They're doing another stream tomorrow night. :)

I've never played the games before, if my friend lets me borrow his copy I'm in. Wondering what all the hubbub is about anyway.

People like you are part of the problem.

You don't even need to get it in mint condition, as long as it's the DC version. The little hinge things that hold the discs in place in the copy I have are really messed up, but I got it for $30 so I don't give a shit.

Sorry, I'm part of what problem?
I'm no collector, I bought both games at PAL release day and I don't intend to sell them because they're part of my "awesome gaming memories".
I do enjoy seeing my stuff its worth more and more indeed, as I think every sane person do.
So, what the fuck are talkin' about?

Does any one have any cool secrets they know about the game? I don't really want to play them through using a walkthrough. I remember reading you could do something so Ryo would hit some girl in the harbour, but I have never done it. Anyone know what it was?

Here is the fight against the girls : http://www.jv247.com/games/8-VIDEO129-La-galanterie-selon-Ryo-Hazuki.html

Here is another hidden scene : http://www.jv247.com/games/8-VIDEO130-Une-rencontre-inattendue-JAP-.html It's the scene with Yukawa-san that you can only get after getting both Yukawa-san figures.

And if you've never seen it, here is the bad ending : http://www.jv247.com/games/8-VIDEO131-Mauvaise-fin-spoilers-.html

I sometimes forget just how good this game still looks. That intro is still better looking than almost any Wii game.

My God, I forget how detailed those character models are, and how good those eyes look up close. The first time seeing that intro playing in front of me, on my Dreamcast, in real time, is one of the defining moments of my gaming career. (for lack of a better term)

I was half-joking, but it's stupid to not play a game because it might go up in value if you keep it in a box.

I have got a few Shenmue's for sale, for the right price. PM me if you are interested in:

Shenmue. (jap)
Shenmue. (pal)
Shenmue II. (pal)

Shipping from Scandinavia.

Catching some leaves in Shenmue II for the first time now :D

Never played the first one, but I'm enjoying this.

2 auctions, buy it now, going for $69.99 right now.

Yikes. What's with the sudden price hike? For the past seven years, the Dreamcast version of Shenmue II could easily be found for $40.

If I didn't already own it, I would buy the Xbox version for $6.99 at GameStop just out of protest.

This thread just made me rebuy Shenmue and a VGA box for my Dreamcast. Last time I played through was about 5 years ago, so I really am looking forward to this.

How does the game look running VGA?

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

I tried to start today, but I think my Dreamcast is fucked. The audio is all messed up, at first it might not work at all, then it works somewhat but has tons of weird noises that make it impossible to hear dialogue or music properly. I wonder is it the Dreamcast itself or just the cord thing. Bummer anyway. :(

Shenmue virgin here. I just started this evening and played through my first day. I found the arcade with the Space Harrier game. That was cool.

So far this game is like no other that I've played. I'm definitely intrigued as to how the story progresses. I wish I had played this game when it originally came out. It's pretty impressive now, I can't imagine how it must have felt 9 years ago.

I usually complete the series a handful of times per year along with messing around, but it's been since summer that I haven't sat down with it. Longest drought to date. I've been craving a sit down and was planning to this weekend, good timing on the thread.

Going to go about it like this:

What's Shenmue > Shenmue (PAL - for save files) > Read 2x Comic > Shenmue II (PAL DC) > Project Berkely > Cry

Just won a copy of Shenmue 2 for Xbox for $15AU on eBay. Boo yeah.

It was something magical.

why i sold my Dreamcast with Shenmue 1 & 2,
and my Saturn?
I think it's a real shame, and of course i will burn in hell for this.
but I can redeem me buying another, yes, I think is the best thing to do

My copy of Shenmue 1 arrived today. I can't wait to dig in again, but god damn waiting for the VGA box to arrive is going to be tough.

I'm wondering if I should grab Shenmue 2 for my Dreamcast too. I've already got that one for Xbox, but having my save carry over does seem tempting.

Either way, I'm hoping to finally finish the second game this time. I've tried to play it countless times and only once have I ever made real progress. It just never grabbed me the way the first game did.

I'd be in if I wasn't so congested with RPG's and "killer app" games (i.e. Killzone 2, RE5, Gears 2).

It is tempting to just chuck it all and partake in some mildly illegal sounding activities with neighborhood kids.

"HEY MISTER...WANNA WRESTLE?"

*violent shudder*

edit: I think I might actually have the PAL Shenmue II version. Pretty sure a local Gamestop was selling it and I was like "hells yeah." If not, there's always the Xbox version. Besides, I don't think I even have my Dreamcast Gameshark/boot disk that let me play the PAL version.

*thinks to self* "oh god I'm gonna get so bashed for asking this but I can't take it anymore"

oh hey GAF!

I have the chance to get Shenmue 1 and 2, but I want to ask..

what's so good about this game? gameplay? music? story?

is it better than...GTA IV...Fallout 3..ToV?

When I get some free time I will need to play through both games. I still remember the first time I watched that disc that came the my Japanese version of Virtua fighter 3 and how hyped I was about Shenmue.

I think I was top 5 in the US for time attacks for the 70 man Free Battle back in my prime.

You don't need to spend the extra cash on Shenmue I PAL.

Check out my first post on the first page.

I just finished my second night with Shenmue. I got to the part where
I'm now looking for sailors. I lost the pool minigame so the guys in the Jazz bar won't talk to me and I can't find the second bar.
Oh well, I'll try some more tomorrow.

The game is really atmospheric. It's great because you can go pretty much anywhere, anytime but there is also a clear goal in mind so you're not wandering around aimlessly figuring out what to do. I look forward to more Shenmue.

By the way, is Shenmue II better than the original? I'll be playing the PAL Dreamcast version. And about how long are the two games?

i guess there are not too many Shenmue fans out there. I'm going to continue to play through at a leisurely pace. Thanks for the tips Himuro. I'm now out looking for Charlie.:D

I replayed both games a almost a year ago and I must confess as the years go by it gets harder and harder to replay them simply given the halted nature and current status of the series.

With that said even though years ago I was firm believer the sequel was miles better than the original. Given much time for reflection I have to confess I've grown rather found the feeling of home, and the much smaller but detailed environments of the original not to mention the small touches such as playing your cassette player, training your moves and being able to examine most objects.

For those newcomers or perhaps veterans looking for something new there's a few things to keep an eye out for;

-For those unhappy of the outcome of Ryo's and Naomi's relationship, try calling her every evening from phone in your house. While sometimes you will get repeated conversations or simply her Mother saying she isn't there, there are a couple of nice little nuggets of information.

-Never beaten Chai in Youarcade? Buy cyclone crawl move in antique store and train it to a high level, set that move on your triggers and with a little practise you should be able to take him down.

-See the guy sitting outside Ngai industries, missing a finger? Check out the Shenmuedojo character profile section for a fasinating backstory

The fact that there are still new conversations and parts being discovered about the games, even though it's been heavily modded and dedicated fans have looked through program files is really a testament to how big and detailed the game was.

In many ways it's potentially a blessing in disguise we never got a 3rd game because the first two titles were just so impecibily developed.

You can't really compare it to any of those games, as it is so unique. It's the atmosphere and feeling of being there that makes the game so superb, although it excels in all the aspects you listed.

However, the game is not entirely without its flaws. My biggest gripes are about the combat and level of detail. The combat is clearly based on Virtua Fighter, which makes sense because the game was originally pitched as a Virtua Fighter RPG. The problem is that it feels awfully clunky at times. Level of detail proves to be a downfall of both games. In Shenmue, they packed tons of detail into a tiny area. One one hand, it's great because there's more interaction with objects in the world, but on the other it limits the size of the game world. In Shenmue II, they created a game world that's significantly larger and still impressively detailed in many areas, but that lacks the feeling of interaction felt in the first.

Still, its flaws are easy to overlook, as it does so many things well. Everyone I ever let play the games has been captivated by them. Get them, you'll enjoy them.

Not that I'm saying Shenmue is perfect, far from it I think it has many flaws mainly with the scripting and voice-acting, but may I ask did you ever train your moves regularly? Its amazing how much more fluid your moves are if you've trained your punches or kicks to intermediate or expert level, often the move changes form to something much faster and more devastating. The cyclone crawl move above I mentioned is a perfect example, without training it to a certain level it's far to slow to execute in the arcade battle with Chai, yet completely changes form with training.

I should mention the only time I felt the combat 'clunky' was in the 1st person battle segment on beverly hills wharf. It's one of the few sections in the game which felt really unpolished, like it was thrown in there without any thought and it really quite an odd section altogether.

Hell, they could port it to Wii as-is and it'd be one of the best looking 3rd party games on the system.

You hear me Sega? $50 for Shenmue 1 + 2. It wouldn't even have to support widescreen. This is how crazed I am.
