GAF Plays Summer Edition: Suikoden series

4 is poop, the only game in the main series I never finished, and don't care about ever going back and finishing.

3 is good though, in fact it's fucking great up until a certain point where it kind of falls apart for me. Still a great game. Was thinking about playing it last year, but couldn't figure out how to get me Suikoden 2 save (on my PS3 hard drive) to work with Suikoden 3. Too lazy to find my memory card adapter thing. If I ever have a driving urge to play it again I may try that.

Haha, I have not been this hyped for an RPG in a long time. Suikoden 2 was absolutely incredible, and I am looking for something as awesome with 3. :D

I hear 4 is just mega awful and no one likes it.
I don't know, I just have a feeling people are pissed that it doesn't take place in the same area as the rest of the Suikoden games.

What part of the continate does Suikoden 3 take place in anyway? Grasslands? They talked about it a decent bit in Suikoden 2, but I see no chance of going there this game.

*Looks above* WTF Himuro? Why did you strech the game. Its a 2D game, you are supposed to box it off to keep a 1:1 pixal ratio.

Right now, just get the memory card adapter, put in a PS1 memory card in, and move it over from the PS3 to the memory card. I'll have to do that once finishing Suikoden 2, I did not get all 108 stars in both games for nothing.

I got seasick in Suikoden IV.

Seriously Suikoden II is probably my most favorite in the series (followed by I). I enjoyed the cooking showdown.

It is the Grasslands in 3.

But then people would hate 5 as well. 4 has a ton of problems. The story is mediocre, the way that story is told is terrible, the 4 person parties makes me cry, the high encounter rate gives me diarrhea, the high encounter rate in towns gives me dysentery, the slow moving boat that you use to traverse the world made me want to shoot to myself, the high encounter rate while traversing the world in the slow moving shit did make me shoot myself (I got better). I quit after getting
Viki
, maybe that would have made things a little better. I dunno, I quit and I'm never going back.

Yeah, I'll probably try that next time I want to play 3.

Am I crazy or did it turn out that Melville hardly even mentioned that his dad was no where to be found? :?

alright, maybe a little off-topic, but definately pertinant to this series. Suikoden V was a great game BTW, (one of my all time faves) and I was wondering if there has been any news at all in regards to a Suikoden VI? Anything at all? If off-topic, please PM me.

No, don't do this to me. I am just about to finish Suikoden 2, after finishing Suikoden 1, and I really want to play something that isn't an RPG...

I'll have the game by Friday >_>

On a side note, is 4 and tactics really that bad? I got them for $1 and $5 respecfully (Tactics came with a soundtrack, how could I not buy it!)
As far as 4 is concerned, essentially what Count of Monte said. Story is meh, very few interesting characters, and they managed to screw up some of the unique features of Suikoden (i.e. expandable fort, addicting mini-games). It's probably worth a play through just to say you did it, but there's little value above that.

Now I actually liked Suikoden Tactics. The story suffers as it is a pre-cursor to Suikoden IV, but the gameplay is interesting and there's some unique things that other tactics games don't do. At the very least, I enjoyed it.

Now there was a rumor a month or so ago involving Murayama, but I don't think anything has come of it. Tierkreis is really the latest thing we know of Suikoden at the moment.

Still haven't played anything but the first two, and I'm fine with that. Love those two games. And to think, I was only able to play/beat Suikoden 1, when it was first released, because my mom didn't let my older cousin buy Resident Evil! Not a bad consolation prize! :lol

I gave up on 3 and downloaded 1 from PSN instead. Wow, what a better experience. Not a fugly, slow POS with bad music. I'll go back to Suiko 3 after 1. 1 is sort of like 2-lite. 2 is untouchable as far as I am concerned but 1 is great. Great to see Flik and Victor and some of my favorites like Valeria and Luc.

Ugly ass N64-era 3D running at 15 FPS is just too much. It's probably the best way to neuter a series known for beautifully animated characters and lightning fast battles.

Finished 1 the other day. Truly a great game, but not as good as 2. The relationships between Gremio and Tir is the only relationship as well developed as that of Nanami and Riou, Riou and Jowy, or even many of Riou's relationships with side characters. The encounter between Tir and Teo is kind of underdeveloped, frankly. The game moves a lot faster and is a good deal shorter, so that's understandable. A lot of the details are sort of omitted whereas you actually do experience them in 2. There emotional scenes in 1 are a lot more restrained than in 2D, and there's none of the character of animation that 2 has. The plot actually does turn into "Windy is going to bring the entire world to ruin!!!" in the end, which was kind of strange...though who knows what the implications of the Beast Ruin would have been in 2 had it not been defeated by Riou.

I also had a nightmarish time managing inventories and equipping everyone.

Still, a great plot, great gameplay, fun dungeons, and great pacing. This is like an 8 or 9 to me and the second one is like an elevendy/10.

You should try Suikoden V next. I haven't played it yet, but have heard really good things about it. And I hear it's a prequel so playing III and IV first is not necessary. (At least as far as I know.)

Sigh, Suikoden II was my favorite RPG on a system known for really good RPG's. Buying a 200 dollar copy of the game being out of the question as it is, I wonder if Sony will ever throw me a bone and release it on PSN.
