I love Deception. A lot. It's like no other game ever made.

Save the world? To hell with that. Join the devil. Murder innocent people.

And then kill everyone in the planet who tries to get revenge.

And look damn good doing it!

Okay, so Deception I is nigh unplayable, but it does have some nifty ideas if you've got the patience for it, like monster summoning and mansion building.

I STRONGLY recommend playing Deception I on a PS3, like I did.

Nine blocks required? Eff that ish.

You do get to squish people with giant feet and then sell their souls for power(a Deception I exclusive), so there's that.

Now once you get to Deception II(which is where I'm at), it's all smooth sailing and murdering some fools with elaborate combos.

I'm going to assume Trapt/IV is the most accessible to everyone, and it's definitely the most polished, but III is my favorite.

I'm at Chapter 10 of my replay of Deception II, then I'll do III, then Trapt.

Anyone else down?

Or up, as the case may be.

Toasty!

Love Deception III. Kagero sold me on the series, but 3 was definitely the best of the PSX games. Sadly, never played Kagero II.

These are games that really should be available over the PSN. Of course, it's another case of a somewhat obscure game failing to get put up at all, does Tecmo even have PS1 games up?

Absolutely loved Deception III (never played 1 or 2).
Also got Trapt, but only played through it once.

... Bummer the series never continued. Can't say I can take part (especially lacking 1 & 2), but this is certainly a thread I'd like to keep my eye on.

I only actually played Deception 1 because it took me ages to track down the other games in the series.

I wanted to play them in order which turned out to be quite difficult considering I got them in this order (arrows = amount of time between purchases):

D1>>>>>D3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Trapt>>>>>>>>>>>D2

The most recent of which being D2: Kagero last fall.

Love these games. I remember renting Kagero Deception 2. Ended up buying it too. Just love the whole idea behind using traps.

The gameplay is amazing! I've only played Deception II but I'd love to get my hands on Deception III and Trapt. I was seriously hooked on this right from the very first level; it's just so much fun to set traps and kill heroes and take the role of a villain for once. :D

If I never played a Deception game before, is the PS2 Trapt my best bet for not quitting after a few minutes?

I remember playing Deception III and being frequently grossed out by how gruesome the traps were. I was pretty sensitive as a kid :P

I love how every enemy had his/her short bio.

This is a good point.
I hated horror as a kid (still not fond of it), and couldn't play any survival horror games... Yet I played the hell out of Deception III <_<

And every enemy having a back story was a very touch.

...Still got freaked out when having to deal with Miguel though.

LOVED these games. And I don't really think its port begging but I would love to see a new game in the series for either portable. I think the stages would be perfect for portable play and the 3DS or Vita would both offer some new gameplay possibilities.

With the state Tecmo is in, I'd think that's borderline impossible. It's a miracle they're still in business.

Fun fact: Millennia(Deception II) is in Dead or Alive.

...sorta.

Her outfit's also in Fatal Frame II. Tecmo LOVE(d) Millennia.

oh man. oh MAN.

I never played any of these games until my freshman year of college, when my roommate dug out a bunch of old playstation demo discs and one of them had a demo for Deception 2. I played that demo so many times, killing Daar the Peasant so many different ways...I ended up ebaying Deception 2 and Deception 3, but only beat Deception 3. A buddy of mine got me Trapt when it came out for my b-day one year, but I never got around to beating it. I was so used to the PS1's framerate that I always mistimed my traps on the PS2 game. I still remember the infinite combos I had setup in Deception 3...good times. :D

why did nobody tell me about this game before?

Do I miss a lot when I only play the PS2 one? (PSX aren't available on amazon)

nothing plot related worth noting, but they're still great fun. The plots always were a little self contained and just an excuse to usher more random dudes into your death castle home.

I only ever played Kagero and Trapt. After I looked them up, I know why, too. Poor Europe only got those two games. I never played them very far, though. I always thought they were a bit too repetitive, so I played them once or twice and forgot about them again. Didn't keep me from hunting down Trapt a while ago.

LOVED these games. My cousin and I would play through them by passing the controller between stages, which is probably why it never got too repetitive for us.

I somehow can't muster up the motivation to revisit these games after watching/reading the excellent Let's Plays on the lparchive. :lol

I never really thought about the difficulty level in the deception games, and they never really got boring for me, but that's because the fun of the game was never "can I kill X dude" but "what is the craziest way I can kill X dude".

Example:

I had a trap combination set up in the last big castle of Deception 3 that I used to kill the last boss and a few others, involving an iron maiden that would clamp shut when they were standing near enough to it, a springboard trap that would launch them into it, a magnet wall that would suck them towards the floor panel where the springboard was, and a bomb trap one square over that would knock the guy flying into the iron maiden also.

Basically, in the amount of time it took the magnet wall and springboard to reset, the guy would get thrown in the iron maiden, fall out of it, get hit with the bomb, and fall back into the iron maiden, and then fall out of it again...and in the amount of time it took to use the magnet wall + springboard trap to knock him into the iron maiden again, the bomb trap would have reset....and the game was full of these opportunities. :D :D :D

I have the trilogy but i remember feeling and 2 and 3 were a downgrade from 1 because of no mansion building and some other elements. Maybe I should try them. Never knew there was a PS2 one.

Played a lot of Kagero as a kid, but never beat it. Got to some level where a really heavily-armored dude just would not take ANY damage from my traps. Gave up eventually.

I picked up D3 a couple of years ago...I really need to rip that to my PSP.

Great series . Something is just relaxing about ending a combo with hellfire and then the carcass lands right by the character .

Lot of the story stuff in 2 and 3 iskind of uncommon now.

I bought Trapt a couple of months ago and have been replaying it slowly, I wonder if there is any reason why the first three games in the series aren't available on the PSN yet.

And this is why the series never gets old.

HOLY SHIT I REMEMBER THIS!

When I was around 3, I played a demo of Deception II or III, and I fucking loved it. So glad to finally know which game it was all these years.

So hey, I finished my 'genocide' run of Deception II.

No survivors, everyone dead to the last man.

This was my reward.

Like a boss.

Let's see if I can do the same in part III!

I played and actually liked the first one a lot. Replayed it again a couple years ago. Funky Story stuff that I can't recall seeing elsewhere. (Working for Satan, zombie bride). But I never played the later games. They toned down the whole "Be an evil bastard" bits, did they?

Kinda, yeah. Millennia is a murderous psychopath, but Reina and Alicia do nothing but whine. Waaah, I killed someone, oh no, there's fifty bodies at my feet, bla bla bla.

You can still do evil things, though.

Anyway!

Poor Reina has been locked in the dungeon because the King is a dick.

Fortunately, a random voice gives you a demonic stone to kill guards with!

That went well.

Now we get creative.

King ain't happy. BRING MORE SOULS!

I need help! I'm trying to find the name of a Deception like game that took place in feudal Japan. You played a lord and you raised taxes and treated your people like crap, so they'd come and try to take you out. You needed to set traps to stop them. It was featured in an import article in an old EGM.

I'd love to play this, anyone know the name? It was on PS1 or PS2.

I only played through Kagero and loved every bit of it. Was gonna get Trapt some years back but was waiting for a price drop, maybe I should look for III and Trapt now since this thread's got me jonesing to drop oil pots on fools then lighting them on fire with wall-mounted fire arrow traps.
