Gaf, PSVita or 3DS XL?

If you're interested in Monster Hunter, then I have to say get a 3DS. Also, although localization hasn't been confirmed yet but, MH4 is getting released on the 3DS.

Quick question, have you played a Monster Hunter game before?

Never played one before but is fun and playable?

You seem sensitive, SmokyDave. I was asking for my own curiousity. If you don't want to fulfill my request, you don't have to. *takes out pencil, jots down notes*
I just don't understand why the Vita library always needs to be viewed purely for exclusive titles. If we were dealing with consoles I might understand, but there's an appeal to handhelds based purely on their form factor. Yes, I can buy Hotline Miami (for example) on a handful of other systems, but are any of those other systems portable? Nope.

As for sensitive, I'm mostly cranky because it wouldn't take you 2 minutes to find the information you want and asking for it in a topic like this just promotes list wars.

Really though, why not get hotline miami on the PC?
Because then I'd be tied to my PC. That's the thing about handhelds, they're handheld.

Is that not the same argument for every multiplat game that appears on the PC?
I'd argue no. Hotline Miami doesn't require top specs to play. Generally speaking, every single person on this forum can probably play Hotline Miami without going out to buy new hardware.

So, if the decision is between purchasing a 3DS or Vita, bringing Hotline Miami into the conversation seems a little irrelevant.

I have both and I prefer 3DS but I don't think that what you want is just a poll of everyone's preferences... make your choice following the majority is the stupidest thing you could do.

NeoGAF is a wonderful tool to make these type of decisions.

I often look the OT games listing threads for each console so I can have a quite complete view of the interesting games on a system.

Just look at the 3DS and Vita games threads (might not be updated for a long time since E3 took all the attention during the past few weeks) but you'll have a better idea than asking here.

Or maybe is someone is kind enough to make you listings here. Anyway just choose the system that plays the most games you like.

if you want nicer visuals, a crisp screen, and the promise of upcoming titles then a Vita could be for you.

That's the problem. Promise of upcoming titles. Which are mostly hd collections from the PS3, indies and 1 or 2 big titles.

If you want a PS4 controller and to play multiplatform indie games, get a Vita.

If you want more first party titles and more bang for your buck, get a 3DS XL.

Both systems have good games. Both have ports. Both have games coming out in the future. It comes down mostly to what games you want to play. You need to research what you want to play and go from there.

I would have a look at both devices' libraries and see what you wanna play, then pick a handheld with the games you want to play the most.

I personally prefer the Vita. I don't really care much for Nintendo 1st party, aside from maybe Zelda and Metroid. But it's finally getting some games I'm interesting in (Fire Emblem, Bravery Default, Etrian Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei games.

Another factor is, did you have PSP because if not, you'll have an access to great library of PSP games through the PSN.

I have a Vita and a 3DSXL. I vastly prefer the Vita.

The viewing angle for the 3D in the 3DS is atrocious and its battery life is pathetic. I finish more than half my playing sessions due to the battery running out. That has only happened once with my Vita.

What have you done OP. Blood will be spilled.

As a 3DS owner who's clocked over 1000 hours over two years, yeah I'm going to say 3DS. I could list games, but that's sort of a dick move.

That said, I am totally buying a Vita and Jak HD Collection... when the price goes off a cliff.

And yet neither of those things affect games really. Turn the 3D off, and the 3DS XL has much better battery life, almost double.

This is really strange to me. I really enjoy your posts in the OT, but you're being absurd right now.

You're being cranky because I could find that information elsewhere on the internet? I'm sorry, but so could the OP, yet that didn't set you off. Isn't this whole thread premised on a comparison between the two consoles? With software being included? And for me to make a specific request, you have to point out that non-exclusive titles can be played portably (remarkable!), and then complain that this could all lead to LIST WARZZ (oh my!).

Who hurt you?

Get a 3DS if you are into Nintendo games, otherwise Vita would be the better choice I think.

Vita also has the benefit of Playstation Plus.

IMO, it is fun.

I enjoy fighting the huge monsters and forging weapons and armors from their parts. Be warned, though, you will be fighting these monsters over and over again to farm their parts. Good thing the combat is challenging and satisfying.

Also, it may take a while to get to the fun part. At the start of the game, you will be doing lots of fetch quests. These quests are sort of a tutorial to teach you the basics of the game.

I recommend that you watch youtube videos to see what combat is like and also read up on reviews of the game as they may explain the positives and negatives of the game better than I can.

I know but it had to be done. Still thinking though. Even the games on vita well a lot of indies i do like and seeing some titles all ready in the discount like Uncharted,Wipeout,LBP for example. Sure it is a personal choice and taste.

It always makes me a little sad when I see someone trying to decide between a 3DS and a Vita since I have both and enjoy both quite a bit.

That said, if money is an issue, the 3DS XL is a much cheaper investment than the Vita.

If games are your main concern though, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but it's important to note that the 3DS is a year older so the software library is of course going to be more polished and plentiful.

Both are good choices. But if you're planning to buy mostly digital then for now the Vita is the better option if only for the more convenient account system (in the case of the 3DS if you lose or break your system you lose your access to all the digital games you bought as well.)

Once Nintendo sorts this out then I might consider getting a 3DS myself but in the meantime I'm pretty much satisfied with my Vita.

Did you read my first post to the OP? I told him not to buy either if he honestly didn't know which to choose. That's fairly cranky.

Indeed. That's why I don't get it when indies and ports are discounted.

I guess I just don't understand how you don't already know which exclusives are on Vita. You've been in plenty of these threads before and it's not classified information or anything.

Who hurt you?
One ex-missus. Got bitten by a cat pretty badly a couple of weeks back too. Left two scars. Looks cool though.

Anyway, it's not my aim to aggravate you, so I offer my apologies for my crankiness.

Yeah it's fair enough. You might want to wait until August, apparently there's going to be a lot of Vita focus at Gamescom, if Sony are to be believed.

They're not always to be believed.
That's not a very fair piece of anecdotal evidence considering how much of that is Animal Crossing playtime at this point. =p

About 10% :P

Anyway, it's not my aim to aggravate you, so I offer my apologies for my crankiness.

C'mon SonyDave, don't apologize for your crankiness. It's who you are.

Best you can do is just read the respective 3DS and Vita threads that detail the present and upcoming games. Otherwise you're going to get a variety of suggestions that won't necessarily tell you anything new.

You're giving the jrps to vita? What?

PS1 + PSP + PSV JRPGs (which seems to be a bit more than the 3DS actually if you include upcoming releases).

I would get an XL because of the upcoming games lineup that I am looking forward to.

The only two games i'm getting the rest of the year for Vita are Meruru+ and Tearaway. Don't really care for most indies on the Vita, especially the ports of games i've already gotten for $1-$5 from bundles.

Well then you'd theoretically have to include the DS library too right?

Correct.

The good thing with Vita is that it has almost all psp games avaialble cheaply on digital, which is a very large backlog of games (and vita screen and controls are so much better than the psp).

Add psn+, which makes you owner of dozen of games from the start and that is a good proposition.

C'mon SonyDave, don't apologize for your crankiness. It's who you are.

Well that's a new one, hahaha.

Anyways, OP, it depends on the games you want. I mean, Vita is a much, much better hardware than the 3DS, but for games in my opinion it can't just compete with 3DS at the moment. And it's not just "Mario games" too.

3DS seems like the no-brainer to me. I have both and am honestly surprised to see so many Vita votes, but then I am on GAF.

99% BC with the DS library. Vita has only digital BC with certain titles (though there are many and many of them are good.)

Ultimately, it depends on your tastes. Just go to GameFAQs and take a look at the libraries in your preferred genres.
For me, I like JRPGs. I have several on the 3DS, with more coming this year, and Persona 4 Golden on the Vita. With FFX-2 coming sometime in the future, and I'm not even sure I want to buy it.

I'd wait until we see how well remote play works between the PS4 and Vita before letting that be a deciding factor. Less buttons than the DS4 means programming inputs to the touch screen or rear touch pad means controls will often be inconvenient, which combined with a laggy experience like PS3 remote play would only be appetizing for the Sony fans.

Vita also has its ridiculously priced memory cards to deal with, compared to 3DS using normal SD cards.

Vita is a great machine to play PS1 games on. They look better on the small screen than they do on an HD television. It's very serviceable to play PSP games on, if you don't mind buying all PSP games digitally. The PSN account works nicely and PS1 games and saves are transferable between a PS3 and Vita. Vita saves are not as convenient to transfer. PS+ does offer a lot of content for your Vita, there's no denying, and you're being forced to buy it anyway if you're getting a PS4 and like online multiplayer.

tl;dr: Follow the games. IMO, 3DS has more of them and more coming. Others will tell you that Vita will be full of great games in the future, but they've been saying that for going on two years now. Depends on your taste.

They're totally different devices with totally different libraries. If you honestly don't know which one you want, don't buy either.

Personally, I'd choose the Vita. It's just better.
It is a shame really, since the Vita is clearly the superior handheld and the one I thought I'd buy first. But since I care more for games than all other aspects, I got a 3DSXL.

Maybe I'll get a Vita eventually, but that really depends on upcoming game releases.

Regarding DS backwards compatibility--this is more of a bonus than a good replacement for an actual DS. From what I've seen, DS games don't look as good on a 3DS as they do on a DS.

On the other hand, PSP games look better on the Vita.

If you want a item collector you can go for Vita like the virtual boy.
But if you wanne play games go far 3ds.

Moste of the games on 3ds = rpg, and you have 3d

I still find ridiculous those memory stick prices and i can see this being a obstacle for many potential buyers. 44€ for a freaking 16gb card?

I had both. Sold my vita because it barely had any games I wanted and the future isn't promising. My friend also sold his vita for the same reasons.

I am thoroughly enjoying the 3ds, though I only play games made by Nintendo on it. The third party games are few and far between for what I like.

The correct answer is Vita.

I have a 3DS but I haven't touched it in months. Maybe just to play a bit of Monster Hunter.

On the flipside, I got a 32gb Vita memory card a few months back and have spent the time between then and now playing most of my favourite PSone games. I think I have more games on my Vita than I had for my PSP for its entire life. It's rediculous. PSone Classics, PSP games, exclusive Vita titles and ports of PS2 and amazing indie games like Hotline Miami and Guacamelee.

II suppose if you have no interest in HD Collections or indie games then Vita might not be for you, but having some of my favourite console games on a mobile platform I can take anywhere is a pretty big deal for me. For example, I love the God of War series, so having the HD Collection alongside the PSP games on my memory card is going to be fantastic. And despite the framerate issues I'm loving the Jak and Daxter HD Collection and really hope they bring Ratchet and Clank too. If I get that and a Devil May Cry collection this platform might go down as my favourite handheld device ever.

Also, regarding Monster Hunter - the PSP games still hold up pretty well too.

Edit: also, Oddworld. Every Oddworld game released so far and at the very least the next one will be on Vita.
