GAF Speaks: How and why did Ubisoft become who they are today?

After Assassins Creed 2, it became a yearly rehash, and all of their open world games since then played the same.

So around the middle of last gen ('09-10) the old Ubisoft that made PoP, Splinter Cell and Beyond Good&Evil started transforming into the Ubisoft we have now.

So I was reading through some retro mags and I saw ads for Ubisoft games for SNES and even NES. To be honest, the first time I paid any attention to the name was with the original Rayman and Sands of Time on PS2... never realizing they've been around for so long. What caused them to get so huge that now they are probably the biggest game publisher out there?

People buy Assassin's Creed and Watchdogs instead of Rayman Origins/Legends. Also going to get my digs in and blame everyone who hated PoP 2008 too.

joking, it's their company direction, not ours

and a ton of other shovelware on various consoles last gen.

They were already big, but they did a lot of side stuff that wouldn't make you think UbiSoft. Like TurboGrafx in France. Or Ape Escape in NA. Or PC port of Resident Evil 4. Or DS shovelware.

It was Assassin's Creed which pushed them onto the behemoth level though.

Well first off, they're still a good company who makes great games.

Lol can always count on you to jump in front of the bullet for Ubisoft.

Ubisoft was my favorite publisher of this past gen because I loved AC and thought they could do no wrong up until Unity where we had to deal with a broken game (deny it all you want, public statements and patch releases are evidence of otherwise), forced parity (900p looks like vaseline smears still), and stupid behind a mobile app game chests. WTF? I'm really hoping the inevitable PS4 version of Rogue (passed on last gen due to Unity disaster) redeems one of my top 3 favorite series from grace.
I still bought Valiant Hearts, Child of Light, Watch Dogs, and Far Cry 4 so I am part of the problem but fuck I really wish they would have done a better job with Unity. It was my most anticipated game of the year until the parity disaster.

Ubisoft needs to stop releasing these broken games, make more Vita Assassins Creeds, and stop eating shit with Microsoft money and parity. Someone slip in the whispers of MS LOTR money gif please.
