GAF, talk to me about the PSVita

It's a beautiful handheld that has expensive as fuck memory cards and the roster of games is flooded with ports of indie games and current gen/previous gen games. Take into consideration that it's must have title is an enhanced remake of a PS2 game. It's nice.

Wait for holiday season for the cards to go lower, then jump for a Vita.

I'm in South Korea. If I buy a Vita here, can I crate an US account?

How does the psone classics look on vita? You have black bars? What about the psp ones?

Sort of both. I spend half my year away from home at school, and I tend to travel by bus (though I'm hoping to start taking plane) to get here. As such hand helds are good for that, and they can come with me to school to play here without as much hassle as a full on console, so to speak. So I kinda play when I travel and in my apartment before I crash for the night.

Are you from Space? Or do you have a really really really long way to school? Like a Son Gohan kind of situation but without the power to fly?

Anyway as most people in this thread has already pointed out, wait till black friday, splurge on a large SD card, buy PS+
Get PS4G
Corpse Party(both games)
Trails in the Sky
Ys games(the steam versions might actually be better)
Persona 3P
Disgaea 3.

And there are tons of more RPGs ready for you, just mentioning some of my favorites.
Oh and the games you will get if you buy ps+ now are
Gravity Rush
Uncharted:Golden Abyss

These two will probably be the only games that will remain on the PS+ rooster until next year I reckon.

PS. I know there are more games to PS+, but since it remains unknown if OP will wait I didn't think it was worth mentioning the other ones but instead just keep to two releases that have been and will be there.
EDIT:

I'm in South Korea. If I buy a Vita here, can I crate an US account?

Yes you can create an US account, worth mentioning is that you can only have 1 account per SD card on the vita and some black magic is involved when changing accounts.(not really just a format and deactivation/activation of said handheld.) Just use PayPal to fill your account with money.

Yes the classics have black bars from what I remember, haven't touched a single "classic" since the indie scene jump started on the vita.
And yes you notice that the PSP games are made for a lower resolution screen, you notice it straight away but it isn't that much of an annoyance I barely bother with it anymore but yes it was pretty annoying going from Uncharted to be playing Elminage.

So, I've had a long, happy ownership of my PSP

Then dive in. I was on the fence for a long time. I just got a Vita, and my experience upon playing it was exactly like when I first got my PSP back in the day:

1. "Holy @#$% this looks awesome."

2. "What took me so long? I should have jumped on this way sooner."

As for what you need, pretty much just PS+ and the largest memory card you can afford. That will give you more than you can play right out of the box.

Yesterday i saw a big italian electronics chain selling vita + 8gb + 3 months of ps+ for 169€ or the same bundle but with a game instead of ps+ for 179€, and those are not even real offers!

People just need to search a little, it's really easy to find low prices, who complains about prices imo wants only to despise and has no intentions to buy vita, if he really wanted he would have easily found a cheap price.
Long time ago, long before the price cut, a retailer sold vita + 4 or 8 gb(i don't remember) + fifa for 159€, i was tempted to buy a second vita lol.

The only thing I don't like are those bubbles on the homescreen. And the pictures in them are ugly most of the time.

Would prefer something like the stream grid view.

I got to college in the next state over. We usually purchase Greyhound to get me to school, since it's cheap, but it's anywhere from an 18-28 hour ride. This semester I'm going to start taking the plane from the one state to the other for holidays and the like.

I'm not looking for a reason to hate it, though. Not really.

Now Please forgive any ignorance on my part as I actually don't own a vita. I am however trying my hardest to convince myself to buy one and thus watched this video.

So am I right in thinking I can use this grid view instead of the bubbles or am i missing something, because frankly I'm not keen on the bubbles either.

Anyway just thought this might be useful to you. (just please make sure someone with a vita confirms this works in the way I'm understanding it)

Edit: Well yep I had misinterpreted it please see below Thanks for correcting me fellow GAFfer

Personally I think the Vita is great. I tried a Gameboy, DS and PSP and didn't really get into any of them (sorry handheld lovers). PSP probably saw most use but I decided portable gaming devices weren't for me.

The I was given a Vita as a gift and I figured I might as well try it out a bit - at least download some of the free PSN Plus games.

Now I think it's fantastic and use it regularly. The screen is awesome, the controls great and the touch / gyro controls very good. Connections are good and it has the core apps I'd want on a gaming centric portable device.

It just feels so right for portable gaming. That's the only way I can put it.

It's even home to my current most anticipated game - Tearaway. It plays PSP digital games well too in my experience - I'm just replaying Locoroco at the moment.

That's so you can quickly go through apps running. You'll still need to go through the bubbles to open those apps in the first place.

Awesome handheld, gets considerably more play than my 3DS XL. Thinking of selling my launch day Vita for the updated version due to the battery life and slimmer-ness.

Umm as for games, definitely get:

Persona 4
Touch my Katamari
PS+
Whatever PSP/PS1 games you want on PSN
Hotline Miami

I'm sure I'm forgetting alot/some games

I just got my Vita but honestly i am hesitating to get PS+ since i mostly want to buy physical releases and i also don't like the whole having to deal with subscriptions thing, 50 bucks a year and then the whole renting your games thing. If one day i decided NOT to pay the subscription anymore my games (that weren't really mine to begin with) won't be there anymore :(

Is PS+ worth it JUST for the discounts on DD only titles ? How many games you gotta buy in that case for it to be worth it?

decisions decisions hmmm

PS+ is worth much more than the price you pay for. If they were for you for ever, there would be an insane lack of balance with retails. In one year, you will get up to 30 ps3 games, as much with the vita and the ps4.

50 bucks is just the cost if a single game, so why bot try it? And US psn has the spend 50 get 10 back deal right now. So if you buy a year's subscription, you get 10 dollars worth of credits next month back. Now is a good time to subscribe.

Vita is also my most played platform since it has launched. Honestly, a big part of that is that it is the most convenient platform for me to play on (married, wife and I work full time jobs and we have 2 kids under 3 years of age).

I do love the hardware and vastly prefer playing it over my other devices that are conducive to my living situation (3DS XL, iPhone, iPad, or Wii U off-TV play). I honestly have never felt like I've been in a drought. There are always at least a half dozen or so games that I want to play at any point in it's lifespan and it's getting to the point where a backlog is developing.

I'm thinking of coming back to Vita (got it at launch, sold it later). At launch, changing accounts was a real pain in the neck, and I needed to do it a lot because I play a lot of Japanese games, but want to take advantage of European stuff too. Is it at all easier now? Can I, say, buy a Vita game on one PS account on my PS3 and install it to a Vita registered with a different PS account? I recall you could keep the authentication for the old account when switching your Vita to a new one.

You don't have to buy anything. PS+ more than pays for itself the moment you buy it. Right now it comes with Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048, Gravity Rush, Rayman Origins (which looks insane on this screen) and the PSP version of Darkstalkers Chronicles. And that's just on Vita, there's a ton more waiting on PS3.

Even if you bought discounted used physical copies of those, you'd pay more than the $50 it cost for PS+, and they add new games every month. It's only a "rental" insofar as you don't get to keep them if your subscription ends, but since you'll need it for online multiplayer on PS4, why would you ever let it end?

I can understand the preference for physical media, especially after the whole Xbone thing, but with a portable going all-digital makes a lot of sense. Moreso than fumbling around with the tiny cards Vita games come on.

It's worse now. You basically have to own two memory cards, and even then it's a pain.

If you haven't played Persona 4 Golden OP, get on it, because if I knew how good the game was, I'd have considered it a system seller. It's become one of, if not my favorite game I've played in my life, and I can't recommend it enough.

Pretty much this. P4G is a wonderful, wonderful game which shouldn't be ignored.

Because i don't play Multiplayer games anymore? (at least not online) ;)

Nah i hear you though, this would be insane value for pretty much anyone, just maybe not... for me, since i guess i barely have time to play a few good games as it is, i wouldn't even be able to manage all that content lol, so i think i'll just stick to a couple physical releases a year and the odd DD or PS1 game on Vita and call it a day!

Just got the suikoden 1+2 collection on jp psn and wow. That oled enhances the game in every way. The vita is a great handheld if you have missed some old titles.

I would definetly get it from craigslist or ebay, because Prices are crumbling hard and fast.

I got my vita for 130€ including a 32 GB Card...

As for games, the vita is a great place to enjoy Indies, i really got to know Thomas was Alone and Limbo through it, even though i own them on PS3/360...

All this talk of vita-ness made me run out and get one. I'm in love with the screen.

Lovely isn't it.

It seems to have been Gaf Vita weekend, several of us seem to have bought them this week.

I've been downloading stuff from my plus collection then storing them on my pc ready to easy swap games in and out.

Finally playing more now. LBP is lovely and Uncharted seems to capture the feel of the series right away.

My avatar summarizes exactly how I feel about it. Rayman origins is free on the US store, I think. Grab it while you can and just stare in awe.

I'm sure it will grow into it's own space, but at this point I still think its a terrible value. Overpriced console, overpriced memory cards, and the only must play on the system is a port.

The most alarming thing I think is the future outlook for games. Ys and Tearaway look decent but I think we are already reaching a point where there will only be a handful of retail games each year. I enjoy a lot of indie games but they probably wouldn't "save" a console for me.

For sure it's VitaWeekend! My count for Vita pickups on GAF is 8 now. I don't why I'm so resistant to LBP for the Vita buy I'm gonna have to try it eventually. Maybe when I beat Spelunky.

No, I hear you. My reasoning was exactly the same, which is why I didn't get + up until now. But since the games on it were pretty much the exact reasons I was going to get the system, and remembering having to fumble around with UMDs and DS carts, it just made too much sense. Plus I'm getting a PS4 and I'm sure I'll want to play some Killzone MP, and check out Drive Club and Res0gun.

As a console I like my Vita much better than my 3DSXL, but to me the game library does not hold a candle to the 3DS. The only game I love is Persona 4. The 3DS has a bunch of games I love, plus Pokemon and Phoenix Wright are right around the corner.

Some game recommendations from my experiences:
P4G - must buy
Soul Sacrifice - pretty good, might be worth waiting for Delta upgrade depending on release date
Virtua Tennis 4 - Good, also a full resolution vita game
Thomas was Alone - excellent
Stealth Bastard -very good
Spelunky - also very good
Blazblue - looks really nice on the vita. A lot of content. Only downside it that it's over 3G!
Gravity Rush - Really good
Uncharted - ok, would not purchase it but worth a play through psn+
Unit 13 - meh
Ninja Gaiden 1 - disappointing. 30fps kills the game. Feels unresponsive and slow.
Killzone - Only played the beta but did not like it. Graphically impressive but was quite meh. I don't think the vita's sticks are good enough for any kind of aiming precision.
Dragon's Crown - ok, but the slowdown when lots of stuff on the screen is very, very bad.

I'm definitely cool with my 3DS, its just that there will inevitably be games on both I want. Plus never fixing that VLR problem is no bueno in my book.

This happens every time someone makes a postive Vita thread.

They fixed it digitally lol

BTW, how's the PlayStation Pass on Vita? Have they got rid of it already, like even EA did? I have to admit, I'm not exactly on time with PSN news since my PS3 died and I don't buy games with online passes. It would be a shame if I had to *cough* pass on the game if I got a Vita.
inb4 "go digital"

I basically stopped playing anything that wasn't on vita when I got it and since.

Lots of gems, very few bad titles.

I just started playing new little king story which I got free on ps+ a little while ago. Enjoying it a lot despite frame rate (so far).

It's modern gaming in a modern, convenient form. A gamer without a vita..?

Preach it! I never thought it would take over like that.

Speaking of Monster Hunter-esque, I wasn't a big fan of the one Monster Hunter game, but would things like God Eater work out for me? Like my big problems with MonHun I guess was I didn't much like the kind of lack of a plot/end goal and I sort of didn't like not being able to lock on when I had no 2nd analogue.

I have both Monster Hunter FU and God Eater Burst on my Vita, and I enjoy GE much more. Just having a story makes me more interested in doing the missions. It's something I've always hated about MH. Soul Sacrifice is really awesome and addicting, and the narrative is well done and interestingly told. I haven't played it in a bit because of my Vita backlog, bit I'll get back into it once I clear out more games. SS is a game that can sick up your time, and I like to save those for later.

Also, playing MH or GE is great on the Vita thanks to that second analog stick. Having the d pad mapped to the right analog stick feels great.

So, you're putting the lives of everyone around you in danger so you can play a stupid video game while driving, and OTHER DRIVERS are the "egocentric" ones? This is ridiculous. I can guarantee you it does not make you drive better, and you are probably not a fit judge of how distracted the game makes you. And, Jesus Christ, "I'll stop doing it if I get in an accident" is not a valid thing to say... About anything! "I'll keep risking the lives of everyone around me until I eventually end one, then I'll stop."

You need to think about the possible consequences of your actions, goddamn.

semantics and spinning is a wonderful thing.

other drivers in large numbers where i live are like that. ever since before i could drive but it has gotten worse. that is unrelated to me, it's a fact. if you like you can come here and see for yourself..

like i said in a previous post, under a set of rules it makes me drive more carefully in aspects where without gaming i normally care less, particularly it makes me drive defensively instead of aggressively. it slows my average speeds, ups my focus on the all-around road and threats instead of digress mentally.

i can guarantee you, you cannot guarantee shit by talking without knowledge of the facts.
i can also assure you i am fit to judge because i tested it objectively, which is pretty easy to do with the help of a gf and a "closed" large space to drive around, also beach balls.

you are absolutely right that was not a thing to say, hence why it is a joke. i knew someone would be pissed of at that. had my fun, have yours now.

however i'm dead serious when i mean that i do not feel bad about doing this to anyone. i feel worse about what many others do to me when they risk my life everyday for their nonsensical/stupid reasons.

try riding a bicycle on a road, then come and tell me i am the biggest of your worries.

i have probably spent more time on this then you have ever thinking about your last relationship's decisions all summed up (please understand the hiperbole as an enforcement to relay to you the ridiculous amount of both hours and effort i've spend thinking and testing this, not talking about time driving and gaming normally just about tests plus thinking about it all and studying some related stuff)

The Irony... How reassuring that you'll stop your clearly idiotic behaviour after you kill or maim someone. Your behaviour is indefensible.

it was intended irony glad you picked it up (it's hard to know if it was a joke or not, i'm aware)

i've spent the better part of a decade doing it when i feel like it, it's not most of the time though. in fact it should be a little double digit % of all the time i've spent driving as normally i can resort to other means to keep me happy while driving. but when i want to i do it, as long as the PSP has a charge and i have it with me lol

anything can be indefensible if you are close minded,e.g. the earth being round or the center of the universe not being earth/sun/etc was indefensible for a long time..
however if you want to get scientifical i can make a case, i will admit however if you want to get practical and head to the endgame it will only result that i should be forbid to do it or be regulated and most def that a lot of the people with licence to drive atm should be forbidden to do so alone with using the phone while driving or even talking while driving, or at most to be still legal people would have to be tested case by case to be determined what things they could do driving.

have i said that if we are objective then GPS,radios and car devices controlled by the driver by any means should be banned? how do you look at the GPS while driving, directions will only get you so far, you need to look at the thing from time to time for a multitude of reasons.. how do you change some things on a radio without looking in most cars? many in the past didn't even have controls near the wheel.. etc etc etc

you are labeling me as a monster but i have more care than all the little monsters you trust to drive alongside you, everyday.

If you love handheld gaming, I see no reason as to why you wouldn't love owning a vita. I have owned one since launch, and I found out that handheld gaming just isn't my thing. Lots of fun and great titles for those who enjoy it though.

Owned my Vita a couple months now and it's fantastic. Wish I could do all my gaming on it. Just a brilliant, sharp piece of hardware. Going through P4G at the moment.
