1. Avatar: The Last Airbender ; I haven't watched enough episodes of Korra yet to rank it.
2. The Simpsons ; Would probably be #1 if they knew when to quit like Avatar did.
3. Batman: The Animated Series
4. Duck Tales
5. Animaniacs
6. South Park
7. Looney Tunes
8. Futurama
9. Archer

I haven't really enjoyed many western cartoons post-childhood, so I'll include anime as it seems that's being allowed for now.

1. Futurama ; Classic Simpsons+Science Fiction, doesn't get much better than that.

2. The Simpsons ; This is basically just the first 10 seasons, as I didn't continue watching for too long after that or I might've put it lower. Up there with Star Wars as the biggest influence on my childhood.

3. Legend of the Galactic Heroes ; Best anime ever made. I love how it's presented as an historical documentary. Again, feeds right into my love of science fiction.

4. Madoka Magica ; A very complete series. Beautiful direction and music, a great storyline and constant show-shattering revelations packed into just 12 episodes.

5. Usagi Drop ; Hard to describe why I love it so much. It's just a beautiful show.

6. Bakemonogatari ; Began my love affair with SHAFT. The first time the direction of a show stood out on its own to me, really blew me away.

7. Nodame Cantabile ; Primarily the self-contained season 1. The perfect romance, with great comedy and classical music. Lovely combination.

8. Avatar ; I had pretty much given up on enjoying a western cartoon post-Futurama, when this came out of nowhere. The Legend of Korra has improved on it even further.

9. Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen ; After laughing hysterically at being shown the dubbed/edited dragonballz as my first exposure to anime, I almost wrote the medium off entirely. Luckily I then came across the soundtrack to the Kenshin OVAs, and soon after the fansubs for it. I'd never seen anything like it, the rest was history.

10. The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi ; Hard decision to close out with this or Cowboy Bebop. In the end I went with my favorite protagonist. Kyon's VA brings across the emotions of the character so incredibly well that nothing has compared among my foreign language viewing.

1. The Simpsons

2. Looney Tunes

3. Tom & Jerry

4. South Park

5. Adventure Time

6. Sym-biotic Titan

7. Animaniacs

8. Freakazoid!

9. Futurama

10. Tiny Toons

Yeah... I think that's it for me.

As a hardcore cartoon watcher, I just wanted to point out how hard this was. And that its im-fucking-possible to try and compare some of these shows by rank. Way to many good choices. Hard as fuck choices.

1; Dexters Lab- I'm pretty sure that I watched this the most as a child. Dexter; Boy Genuis" was an awesome character, and so was his family. Never a dull episode, plus the Justice Friends and Monkey shows are impressive as well.

2;Pokemon FIRST SEASON 151 pkmn/- No child on earth was safe from this show. Ash (at the beginning), Misty, Brock, and Pikachu went on an Adventure of a Lifetime. and no Its not the nostalgia talking.

3; Avatar the Last Airbender- Completely came out of left field. Had no idea that this would be one of the greatest animated shows of all time. Characters and Story done absolutely right. Cant find a flaw.

4; Samurai Jack- Do I really need to say anything? This is a true work of Art. Masterpiece

5; Adventure Time- This cosmic dance; bursting decadence and withheld permissions, twists all our arms collectively. But, if sweetness can win, and it can, then I'll still be here tomorrow to high-five you yesterday, my friend. Peace."

6; Justice League and JLU- writing, plot, and progression/pacing is on level with Avatar TLA. This show and Static shock mad me get into comics.

7; Rugrats- this show brought out the imagination of children and showed it in a charming and completely relate-able light.

8; Ed,Edd,n Eddy- 3 pals that have nothing in common but their names and loyalty towards one another, trying to scam kids and survive the cul de sac.

9; Batman the animated series/Batman Beyond- so damn good.

10; South Park- pretty sure I don't have to say anything.

01. Batman the Animated Series

Kind of a safe choice maybe, but man I love the series. From the moody and gothic opening to the fantastic voice actors and fantastic animation: Batman is my number one animated show. Nothing to add really.

02. Avatar The Last Airbender

Nowadays cartoons in general seem to be about bad animation, horrible flat characters, shitty humor or even worse: to bore kids out of their mind. Avatar TLA finally showed kids (and adults alike) that good animated shows still exist. More importantly, it has actual character growth which seems rare these days. Another element of the show is the world where Avatar takes place: it’s this interesting mix of several cultures, with people having these bending elements to control. It’s a lovely world to see. But my favourite thing about the show are the characters. They’re funny, smart and you actually care for their struggles. Iroh and Zuko for instance change a lot during the series. Zuko obviously changes more, but peeling away the layers of Iroh was good to see. And well… Team Avatar; what can I say? They are a fun bunch. With Toph and Sokka being extremely funny at times.

03. X-Men the Animated Series

I watched X-Men A LOT. I was a kid in Holland so the whole comic culture from the US was something we never had: but I always thought the cartoon rocked. It had a lot of extremely cool storylines (in retrospect, when reading X-Men comics myself) and there never seemed to be a dull moment. Plus, I like Wolverine. But which kid didn’t? It also had a lot of themes which were pretty heavy; one of them being ethnicity.

04. Ducktales

Another favourite when I was a kid. Uncle Scrooge (or in the Dutch dub, he was named Oom Dagobert) took in Donald Duck’s nephews and they had all these crazy adventures. It was a typical Disney feelgood series but that’s why loved it so much.

05. Pinky & the Brain

“Geez Brain what do ya wanna do tonight”
“Same thing we do every night Pinky: try to take over the world!”

Completely bonkers, two mice who’s genes were spliced and one of them grows a desire to take over the world. Introduced in Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain became two of my favourite characters because next to obvious kids slapstick humour, they parodied politics, Hollywood and popculture in a lot of episodes. We see a sad Gorbatsjov standing in the cold, Bill Clinton had several appearances, famous actors, books, music: nothing was safe from the show. Not even Warner Bros. Animation when they gave the show a retooling with Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain. WB pressured the team to do something else so they edited the opening tune with "It's what the network wants, why bother to complain?" Great fun. NARF!

06. Spectacular Spider-Man

The series from the nineties will always be a fond memory. But my favourite Spidey cartoon to date is Spectacular. The first time around, the animation seems a bit lame but it’s the quality of the episodes all around which makes it so good. It’s has a lot more in common with the comics (Peter being in love with Gwen Stacey, even with MJ in the picture) and the supporting cast/villains look and act more like their comic counterparts. And, it’s actually funny. To bad it only lasted for 26 episodes. And they replaced it with Ultimate Spider-Man…

07. Transformers Generation One

My favourite cartoon as a kid. I loved transforming robots from outer space. I loved the fact how Starscream was always plotting to overthrow Megatron, how Optimus Prime was this perfect leader who always made the right decision; watching the cartoon so many years later it has aged horribly, but it deserves a spot in my top 10 list of animated series. And oh, it had robotic dinosaurs, combining robots and and and…

08. Dexter’s Laboratory

Cartoon Network had a lot of fantastic shows in their “Cartoon Cartoon!” line-up. Cow & Chicken, Johnny Bravo and the Powerpuff Girls. But the one I’ll always remember will be Dexter’s Lab. A little American kid sporting a weird eastern European accent and hyper intelligence? That’s weird. Plus, he has a secret lab where he invents the most awesome stuff. Until his stupid sister DeeDee found another way into the lab to destroy his inventions. But the reason why I like it is because even with his magnificent brain, Dexter was always surprised about the world around him. His parents love him, but they never seemed to realise how smart he is. DeeDee is completely the opposite. This always lead to funny moments where he doesn’t understand the world. Plus, it had funny segments like “Dial M for Monkey” and the superhero parody “the Justice Friends”.

09. Beast Wars

It’s the second Transformers cartoon on my list; it’s here because of several fantastic episodes which made me look back at the series and made me realize it was pretty heavy for a kids tv show. Best example, the episode “Code of a Hero”. Beast Wars has several fantastic characters (and actual character growth) with Dinobot leading the pack. In the first 34 episodes we see him struggle with his Predacon origins: originally he wanted to overthrow Optimus as the Maximal leader and use the Maximals as a tool for revenge against Megatron. But gradually, he learnt more about himself (his honor) and he started to believe in the Maximal cause. And in episode 35, he sacrificed himself to save the pre-humans from the Predacons. Death in a kids tv show? It’s weird, but it worked because the way how he died and how the Maximals dealt with it was amazing. Especially Rattrap; they were friends until the end. But that’s just one of the examples. Beast Wars actually was about war, friendship, personal growth, death and there was room for some comedy thanks to Waspinator.

10. The Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

Might be a bit too fast, but after discovering comics and in particular the Avengers, EMH really clicked with me. The first season did everything right and the several nods towards the comics are pretty awesome. It has a lot of the classic Avenger story lines and the characters remain the same. Okay, Hulk is more co-operative than his comic version but he is fun. The second season is more of a Marvel all-stars season but that’s pretty fun as well.

1: Gargoyles
2: Batman: The animated Series
3: The Real Ghostbusters
4: The Simpsons (i feel like the early seasons still warrant high praise)
5: Mighty Max
6: Ren & Stimpy
7: Talespin
8: Thundercats
9: Family Guy
10: Tom & Jerry

  1. The Simpsons
  2. Batman: The Animated Series
  3. South Park
  4. Avatar: The Legend of Aang
  5. Adventure Time
  6. Regular Show
  7. Futurama
  8. The Amazing World of Gumball
  9. The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
  10. Batman: The Brave and the Bold

There was really no avoiding putting The Simpsons at the peak. I'd likely put it top of a list of televison series full stop. Even the awful, awful recent series aren't enough to sabotage the television perfection that was The Simpsons at its peak. Futurama and South Park, and their peaks, have promised to be nearly that good and nearly that funny, but never quite.

I ended up with two Batman series on the list. I genuinely think that the original nineties series is superior - I was so glad to recently discover that the show was as good as I remembered it being as a child - but I love the campy, homage to comics' bullshit approach of The Brave and the Bold.

The Legend of Aang is an amazing series. It's provoked a lot of detraction lately - what with Legend of Korra attracting attention back to it - but it's still pretty much the best children's show I've ever seen; at least the best with a continuous arc. The lore, the characters, the action, the stories - it's anime done right, and it's not even anime!

Otherwise, the list is peppered with current animated shows which I'm obsessed with. Flapjack, Gumball, Regular Show and particularly Adventure Time are funnier than they have any right being, and can be pretty endearing at times.

I've always wanted to watch The Spectacular Spider-Man (I've loved the bits I've caught) but I've never found the means.

1. The Simpsons - easily my favorite show of all-time. I often rewatch an episode from seasons 2-8.

2. Futurama
3. Recess
4. King of the Hill
5. South Park

The writing on the first 9 seasons of The Simpsons makes the writing on all these other shows look like it was done by 8 year olds. If you don't have The Simpsons as number 1, you are wrong. It was smarter and funnier than anything else animated or not.

On second thought, I'm removing Chip N Dale and putting in SWAT KATZ. Because SWAT KATZ is best Cat-based show ever in existence and need some plug.

I'm assuming the old Disney shorts don't count since they weren't really a TV series?

If so...

1. Looney Tunes
- it still messes me up that there aren't really Saturday morning cartoons these days (grew up in the 70s) so I've started DVRing Looney Tunes and watching it with my daughter every Saturday morning over cereal.

2. Batman the Animated Series - I have always loved super heroes, but this was always a cut above the rest in terms of tone, story telling, voice acting, etc. A cartoon that seemed equally aimed at adults and kids.

3. Spider-man (1967-1970) - This show is very dated, uses tons of recycled animation and often lacks logic at all (if the building are in the background, what are his webs attaching to?), but it just has so much charm, great music, and possibly the best TV theme song ever. I wasn't born until '71, but I caught reruns as a kid and loved it. I still enjoy it, it's definitely from a slower, simpler time of TV.

Come on, sing along (IN COLOR) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o29VoxtsFk

4. Tom & Jerry - Around 4th-6th grade or so it was a staple every afternoon after school. So many classic elements that still influence media to this day. A lot of the stuff in Home Alone (heating the door knob) was straight from these cartoons.

5. The Flintstones - I loved this (and the Jetsons) as a kid and they still hold up today. Another that is equally entertaining to kids and adults.

6. Young Justice - I've always been more of a Marvel guy and wasn't that familiar with all of the DC sidekicks, but this show is just quality. Really good voice acting, intriguing plots and possibly my favorite adaptation of Robin.

7. Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
- Started airing before the movie hit, so it was really the first time seeing all of these characters together outside of comic book pages. Animation could be a bit better, but the acting and pacing are quite good. Unfortunately, the scheduling is a mess and it's going to be replaced next year. I hope the new one is this good.

8. SuperFriends - Watching these today, they're pretty silly and the plots are more than a little ridiculous. However, to a kid in the late 70s to early 80s it was awesome to see all of these heroes together on one show.

9. - Phineas & Ferb - One of the smartest cartoons to come along in years. With so many modern kids show featuring completely obnoxious characters, these boys are so good-natured and genuinely optimistic that's it impossible not to root for them in whatever they're attempting. Dr. Heinz Doofensmirtz will go down as one of the best cartoon villains in TV history. This is a show I've actually watched even after my kids are asleep.

10. Kim Possible - Similar to P&F, I've watched this after the kids were in bed - in fact my wife and I made to point to watch the first TV movie when it premiered on Friday night. A good premise, endearing characters, and smart humor made this a high quality show, something the Disney Channel could use more of these days.

1. The Simpsons - Even though the later seasons have declined in quality, it pretty much became the flagship of American animation

2. King of the Hill - The thing that I love about King of the Hill is that while it's a cartoon, it felt more like an animated sitcom than anything. It had it's cartoon moments, but most everything that happened felt like it could've been done in a live action sitcom.

3. South Park - South Park took an interesting turn after a few seasons. It started out as a cartoon with 4 boys that got themselves into these weird, whacky situations much like a cartoon does. While that still remains, the show delves into current events a lot of the time now quite nicely.

4. Futurama - Take one part The Simpsons and take everything related to Science-Fiction and all things nerdom and you have an amazing cartoon.

5. Daria - If you were a tween or a teenager at the time this show was around it was amazing.

6. Rocko's Modern Life

7. American Dad

8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

9. Rugrats

10. Tiny Toons

Will update this with comments later on... but for now here are my rankings.

1. The Simpsons - 5 Points
2. Batman: The Animated Series - 4 Points
3. Planetes - 3 Points
4. South Park - 2 Points
5. Transformers: Beast Wars - 1 Point
6. Futurama - 1 Point
7. Infinite Ryvius - 1 Point
8. American Dad - 1 Point
9. King of the Hill - 1 Point
10. TaleSpin - 1 Point

I really need to check out Avatar sometime.

1. Fleischer Superman
The complex animation is the fabric of which Batman TAS is styled after. The stuff that was actually animated is goofy (such as its interpretation of a dinosaur), but some comics still manage to embrace the cheese, which cartoons need a little bit of.

2. Popeye
They're my 2nd favorite Flesicher series. It's such a silly cast, and went on to inspire Mario.

3. Jonny Quest
The best cartoon Hanna-Barbera cartoon. It was modern adventure, likeable characters, and atypical art direction compared to almost everything else they did.

4. Batman TAS
The original series of the DCAU also had the best writing and the best animation, and an incredible voicecast. New Adventures had some good episodes but the art suffered. It was a solo show when a Justice League show seemed impossible, so creators didn't focus on making other characters look stupid like they can with JL/JLU or with Young Justice.

5. King of the Hill
The best general audience primetime cartoon. It started off as a satire of a middle-class Texan but matured into a show about silly-yet-human characters that generally care for each other.

6. The Flintstones
The original best general audience primetime cartoon. I might be looking at this one with rose-tinted glasses because it's been retired while The Simpsons keeps getting worse, and I didn't watch every Flintstones episode.

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987
It's the best 80s toy cartoon. Still, the voice cast was phenomenal (my favorite in this list). It's probably the cheesiest show I'll list but it reminds us there's more to adaptation cartoons than having to be direct adaptations.

8. Batman Beyond
A great and unique follow-up to Batman TAS. The show had serious style. It recycled some of the ideas that made Batman successful (like the Mr. Freeze episode), but it was a fun twist on a franchise adaptation.

9. Rugrats
This was a great kids show that didn't involve spastic yelling and animation. Notice I will never list a show like Chowder or Flapjack because of that crap.

10. Captain Planet
Even if it was cheesy sometimes, and participated in materialism, it felt like one of the most earnest attempts to encourage kids to consider the world around them.

Up and coming

TRON Uprising: The animation is incredible, and the story is interesting. If they can manage to incorporate themes of the original movie, it can be a REALLY good series. It probably won't, but at least it will look good.

On the fence

Adventure Time: Some nonsense is good, but this show is overboard. That's fine for its creators but I personally prefer some structure. :P

ReBoot: I liked this show but people who didn't experience CG in the 90s probably won't appreciate the looks. I didn't like the later seasons.

Chowder, Flapjack: The spastic humor and yelling is almost an immediate turn-off. They are remarkable shows if you can get past them. Over time, I could not.

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: Contains tinges of the last 2 listed cartoons. I like Mac and Frankie, and the main cast. Bloo was really annoying though.

The Simpsons: Continues to ruin itself

Futurama: It's a great show when they don't focus on real life issues. The universe allows for a lot of unusual comedy to happen.

Batman: The Brave & The Bold: I liked the ideas, but the artstyle is crappy skew on Silver Age comics art. It's hard to look at. The Superdickery episode was fantastic though.

I've never seen:

AVATAR: The Last Airbender: I'm watching Legend of Korra, and that's a great show. I only regret a show could look western and be as good.

3. BTAS
The show that made me fall in love with Batman (would love to add all of the Timm-verse shows, but yeah ... so awesome)
4. Avatar: Last Airbender
5. The Boondocks
So so so good. The strip may be gone but the truth bombs McGruder brought made its way into the show and they didn't skimp on the animation
6. Samurai Jack
Minds were blown in Ghana when this show aired
7. Spectacular Spiderman
That Opera episode
8. Beast Wars
Dinobot's sacrifice
9. Flintstones
Another classic that really should be paired with the Jetsons in how funny it still was as I grew up 30 years later in Ghana
10. Dexter's Laboratory
Damn, good show,

So many that should have made this list but the above are the shows where I can give specific episodes where my mind was blown and or completely changed after watching the show.

1. The Simpsons; nothing beats it. I don’t think anything ever will.
2. Looney Tunes; classic and ageless.
3. Ren & Stimpy; crude humor at its best.
4. Adventure Time; amazing world, characters, themes, writing, etc. A piece of art!
5. South Park; innovative and rebellious; has the best cartoon villain of all time (Cartman).
6. Home Movies; hilarious and yet so subtle. Underrated!
7. Futurama; not just a Simpsons lookalike.
8. Archer; clever writing and great characters.
9. Duck Tales; I just simply enjoyed the hell out of this show as a kid every morning.
10. Dr. Katz; though I haven’t seen it in forever, I remember loving it.

Pretty happy with my list.

Are you asking or questioning the choice?

If asking, I enjoyed it. Sad seems to be ending with a single season.

I was questioning the choice. I never really enjoyed the show. The first half of the season started strong, but got bogged down by Lion-O relearning the same lesson each week. The second half didn't help either, by adding Pumyra on top of an already ridiculous romance sub-plot and throwing in some atrocious kitten episodes. Outside of The abomination that is Ultimate Spider-Man, Thundercats was the worst animated show I've seen recently.

1. Batman The Animated Series
2. Avatar: The Last Airbender
3. Adventure Time
4. The Simpsons
6. South Park
7. Justice League/Justice League Unlimited
8. Archer
9. The Tick
10. The Venture Bros.

1. Looney Tunes - untouchable. Not only the best cartoon, but best thing on television, ever
2. The Simpsons - Nothing more needs to be said
3. The Flintstones - Honeymooners in the stone age. Not necessarily aimed at kids
4. South Park - pushes boundaries, always makes me laugh
5. X-Men (90's) - Animation isn't always great, but still very moving and entertaining
6. Scooby-Doo - loved everything about this show
7. Hey Arnold! - dealt with real shit that I could always relate to. I liked that he lived in the city, as I am a city boy myself. A lot of cartoons take place in the suburbs for some reason.
8. Pokemon - A grand adventure awaits.
9. Spongebob Squarepants - gets referenced almost every day by someone at some time in my life
10. Speed Racer - intense crazy racing with cool characters (Racer X)

Honorable Mentions:
Dragon Ball Z
Johnny Bravo
Dexter's Laboratory
Popeye

1. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies.

6. Betty Boop.
7. Superman (Fleischer).
8. Mighty Mouse.
9. Woody Woodpecker.
10. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Kind of expected more votes, but on the bright side.. means less for me to tally.. since haven't worked out a system to do it.. not by hand.
