GAF Watches - Avatar: The Last Airbender

If I was a waterbender every fight would start the exact same way without fail. I'd pop their eyes like grapes in their sockets. See how well they hold up after that.
By removing the air from your lungs and preventing you from taking another breath. Or popping them altogether.

Thinking about it. I'd love a history of the Avatar series showing the origins of all the bending techniques and the Avatar.

I'm in. This will be my 4th (5th?) rewatch of the series. I'll start with the first episode tonight, and try to keep it to just one a day.

That's actually a good description that I hadn't thought of before. A lot of its elements do remind me of those shows.

edit: Also, Airbending is theoretically the most powerful. Aang was a pacifist (as were the rest of the air nomads) so we never got to see the extent of it's abilities, but you could just bend all the air out of an opponents lungs and crush them. Practically insta-death.
Bloodbending is also effective and overpowered to a similar degree, but has been established to only work on a full moon
, so it's use is limited. No such limits would apply to the destructive possibilities of air bending other than the bender's own restraint.

Wouldn't be cool if in the beginning Air benders were not pacifists but the opposite and had to become pacifists because of how deadly air bending can be.

I already rewatched the whole series last summer, but I'll probably give it a fourth run when Legend of Korra gets a solid release date. The first half of the first season is merely "good for a kid's show" but after that I'm consistently awed and impressed by how much it develops and evolves. Books 2 and 3 are super awesome and badass.

I really wanted to love this show. I watched the first 2 seasons but didn't really care enough to continue with the third. Not sure why, it just didn't click with me.

To anyone thinking anything but Water is the most powerful remember just two things.
  1. Waterbenders can sense water easily. You cant sneak up on them and they'll know where you are before you even see them.
  2. An aneurysm is all it takes to stop you from bending anything and there is no defense. They sense your water moving in any single motion to bend at all and they pop blood vessels in your skull like zits.

OP for the win ^_^
*_* !!!"Shit not again! AGHHHHHHHH!"

How dare you people start an Avatar thread without me!

Anyways posted this in the other thread but I want to see what people think:

Ozai>Iroh>Azula>Zuko

Whatever happened to Zuko's mother????

We should find out soon. "The Promise" comic book series are coming out January 25th, they tell about the events that happened immediately after the ending. The Promise Part 2 will come months after the first one is released.

Re-watched it during the summer.

Was able to catch a ton of references to past, and future episodes. Was just as great as I remembered.

EDIT: Them not answering where Zuko's mother was really pissed me off though.

Whatever happened to Zuko's mother????

Do you really wanna know?
Oh she likely left in self banishment after killing Zuko's grandfather after hearing from Azula the lie that Grandfather was going to have Zuko killed as a punishment to Zuko's dad for demanding Iroh's claim to be next in line for the throne.

What? Its obvious what happened back then and what happened to her. Likely she was sent away never to return by her husband who probably spouted some crap about "You are my wife and I shall not kill you and will grant you mercy in the form of banishment."

Really it'd be a way to just cover up his coup. Is it any wonder Azula ended up his most trusted commander after putting him on the throne? Plus c'mon they named her "Ursa" as a damned hint (term for bears who are legendarily vicious to those who threaten their cubs) and had that whole seen with the turtle ducks and her talking about how vicious moms can be if their kids are threatened. She killed grandfather, was banished by her husband and disappeared all because she believed Azula's lie which was told just to set this up. "My own mother thought I was a monster." is a quote Azula is fond of. Guess why.

Obvious.

Actually
the Avatar bible supposedly has the answer of what happened, but they ran out of time to put it in the show. The final season was already kind of compressed and fitting in Zuko's subplots was harder than they anticipated. If we don't get the answer in Korra, they've talked about doing a comic that bridges the two series together better and it will likely tackle that.

So I'm not wrong then. It was something already written in that was cut for screen time from the subplots on air. That means it wasn't a loose end they'd write an answer too some other time, but that its answer was already in the show and being built up towards. The artbook states that the answer is in the show if you paid attention as well confirming this, and if it was in the original bible then my spoilered post still holds up as all those scenes and quotes and mentions by the Fire Lord
of her treasonous secrets
pretty much confirm all my post within the seasons of the show. I just can't wait to see the drama played out finally. They've pretty much spelled it out by now.

I just got through that episode actually.

Seems pretty obvious that Zuko's mother murdered the emperor.

This show just keeps getting darker.

And Azula is even more insane than I previously thought

Well "The Promise" is coming out soon so you guys can see what happened to Zuko's mother (and the rest of the cast) there.

edit: oh nvm somebody already said that

edit 2: and i don't give a fuck what anybody says: if Azula wouldn't have lost her shit she would have won

Loved show but had two problems!
large fights never felt epic...and why was every one so weak compared to Fire.Northern water tribes could drown their ships/earth people could crush them with landslides>
And Air benders can blow of their lungs etc

That ties into one of my only complaints about the show, and the only time I ever felt the show suffered from being a "kid's show first." During the (season 3)
Invasion on the Day of Black Sun, it seemed completely ridiculous that such a small force blasted into the heart of the Fire Nation and...nobody died. The entire battle really lacked epicness or tension.

I felt this too to some extent, but remember that
they weren't really trying to take the entire fire nation by force, more like they were sneaking in under the cover of the eclipse. They did try a large scale invasion, but this happened in the Earth Kingdom and Azula wrecked everything for them.

edit 2: and i don't give a fuck what anybody says: if Azula wouldn't have lost her shit she would have won
It was inevitable that she was gonna lose her shit. Her fear based regime fell around her ankles when her two cohorts no longer feared or even gave a damn about her, and when her brother didn't buy her bullshit. Both of these were gonna happen. And with azula being so approval based.. she was a powder keg.

Yeah,
I understood, and could believe, how they got in undetected, and I could even believe them taking the capitol during the eclipse. What I didn't find convincing was that nobody died. Also, how the hell they expected to hold the capitol, since the eclipse was only like 10 minutes long? I doubt the fire nation would just surrender once the Fire Lord was killed.

Hahahaha, it is very funny when I stop and think about it.
It was an idiotic plan and people should have died, definitely. I guess the only reason they weren't slayed was because of the 'kid show' angle. They did pay for their mistakes though. At least those who didn't get away on Appa, hahahaha. I can't really imagine Aang and them going in on a suicide run against the Fire Nation, but when you step back and look at it...lol, that's what it was.

haha, yep. But again, that's the only part of the series that stands out to me as being ridiculous and suffering for being a kid's show.

Spoiler: Best character in the show:

It would have been close because of all the advanced skills
Zuko picked up from his vision with the dragons but yeah it would have been her victory. Katara was incredible in that fight with her little freezing trick.
The more interesting match up for me is Ozai vs Iroh.

Oh man, I forgot about all the crappy adverts on these DVDs. No, I don't want to buy Over the Hedge, or your crappy Sponebob Squarepants games. *skip*

Sokka_and_Katara.png

Yes, I love that long intro.

Other than that, it's your basic first episode. A little slow, tons of exposition but generally decent. I forgot how casually sexist Sokka is at the start, too.

So I love the show.. but its just all over the place.

SPOILERS>

So basically.
Book 1
-You must learn fire and water bending to defeat the firelord
-Avatar state destroys the invading fire nation army

Book 2
-Wow you should just go into avatar state and kill the firelord
-YOU MUST NOT. If you do the avatar cycle might end
-Hey maybe it'd be nice if you mastered the avatar state from the guru. Wait wasnt roku just saying thats a terrible idea?
*Goes into avatar state. Dies from lightning bolt.
-Ok seriously. Lesson learned, DO NOT go into avatar state

Book 3.
-Back to the original plan, master water and fire and defeat the firelord.
-Forget that plan. Go into Avatar state
*defeats firelord

So Aang could have defeated the firelord as soon as he got out of his bubble, and it wouldve been easier too without sozens comet. So the whole adventure was pretty much pointless. Or did I get it wrong?

you got it very very wrong :lol

Every instance of the Avatar State was something he didn't have control over (until he used it to take away the Firelord's bending).

Aang would have been killed if he had gone to fight the Firelord straight away. He didn't know how to take away somebody's bending, and he refused to resort to killing.

Learning all the elements is about being being a 'complete' Avatar, not because you had to defeat the Emperor, since obviously the Emperor wasn't around for all the previous Avatars. They were two different things.

Mastering the Avatar State was the quickest way to kill the Emperor, but doing so would go against Aang's arc of not wanting to murder him.

He didnt have control over the avatar state in the beginning, and he didnt have control in the end. Whats the difference.
And why would him being able to take away his fire bending be an issue. Killing him would have also stopped the war.

He refused to kill Ozai because of what he learned from the Air Nomads. They believed it was never the answer, and Aang held himself to that standard.

Did you, like, not pay attention to anything during the show? Aang doesn't kill people. And he was in control during the end.

I actually watched this show in it's entirety just recently as I was on break from work and had been curious about it. I had actually watched the movie on Netflix prior to watching the series just cause me and a few friends were bored and I wanted to see just how bad it was (so bad!).

Really enjoyed the series though, love the way they worked martial arts looking stuff into the bending, had nice fluidity to it unlike the long drawn out "dances" that occurred anytime anyone used the smallest bending in the movie.

Looking forward to the next series!

Yes he did.

Did you finish the series? Because that's the last thing that happens in the final battle.
No he went into avatar state when he was near death.. as always.
Sure he got out of it in the end, but hes snapped out of the avatar state before that isnt new. And even if he didnt he already proclaimed that he was prepared to kill the firelord if thats what he needed to do.
Another thing.. the firelord can be imprisoned with or without his powers. I dont see how him being able to take away powers even changes the end outcome. It doesnt.
If he took away his power during the fight then sure that would have been a pretty useful ability.

How do you imprison the strongest Firebender in the world on the day where their powers are magnified? And Aang was in control of the Avatar State at the end. He used it to put out the fires at the battlefield.

Early Sokka was really lame in fights.

iOxOoj9zVp5uj.gif

Aang on the other hand, was a BAMF from day one.

Sokka was surrounded by women, children and possibly a few men too weak to fight. Who was he supposed to learn manliness from? Aang was trained to fight and manipulate air by warrior monks. The show would of been so much more entertaining if Sokka was the Avatar trained to be bad ass from the start. A lot less of Aang's childish peace crap.

Sokka being the Avatar? He is already one of the main characters, also SMH at Aang's "childish peace crap". He has principles, I know that comes as a shock to many people these days. He's just like Batman who refuses to kill.

Sokka learned some of his "manliness" from the Kyoshi Warriors.
Yep, I was going to get into that when the episode came around.

Except Aang actually fixes things instead of simply roughing dudes up a bit and sending them to a revolving door institution.

I think some characters are better left in the supporting role, which Sokka filled extremely well. He had proper progression and evolved as a character
and as a pimp
. If they switched him to the lead, they would have altered his character to fit the lead bill and probably be given Aang's peace crap in the process.

Why?

It would have made no difference other than the comic relief now being the main character, which is, of course, a bad idea.
