GAF, what is the scariest game you've ever played?

I've played P.T. and Amnesia The Dark Descent and I have to say, that both are equally scary IMO, but then again both use jumpscares in a away that makes the game feel unpredictable and unsafe.

I've yet to play any Silent Hill game. I've thought about getting Silent Hill 2 or 3 maybe. Which one is better?

Also, are there any indie-horror games that aren't necessarily 3D that are really scary? I've thought about the game called "Home" on Steam as well as Neverending Nightmares or something like those.

P.T. for me as well. I've played Amnesia, the older Silent Hills, Alien: Isolation, SCP - Containment Breach and many others, but P.T. was in a league of its own for scariness. It's insane and I hope the full game is just as good.

As silly as it sounds, Minecraft has made me jump out of my seat and make strange noises more than any other game I've ever played. Not in a horror kind of scare but a startle scare. Spelunking in the dark depths and you think you are safe when suddenly the hissss of a creeper right next to you comes out of nowhere, or a skeleton arrow hits the wall next to you. That damn sound of a skeleton archer bow from the dark.....

Nothing absolutely nothing tops this and I have played them all.

Dead Space 1.

The sound department of that game gets my highest praises. One of the best atmosphere and background sounds in any game I've played till this day. Playing the game in surround sound changes everything. All my friends have played the game with regular stereo and I tell them they haven't played Dead Space the way its meant to be. The atmosphere is just so well done. My heart was pumping like crazy the whole time I played the game. Just amazing. If you've never played it in surround sound do yourself a favor and play it again. It's a completely different experience.

Bunch of games gave me the " Nope, Nope, Nope" feeling. PT is the most recent. My brother was watching me and was laughing so hard. Other than that I would say any Silent Hill. I remember playing The Room and having to see what ungodly things were waiting for me when I got back to the apartment. Those babies crying man. And stupid ghosts. Pretty much opening any door in any Silent Hill sucks.

I also remember being quite creeped out in Call of Cthulhu a few times as well.

I would like to add Dark Souls to the list. The game makes you feel vulnerable all the time and whenever you see a new path you think twice to explore it. No cheap jump scares here.

Outlast.

(Very) repetitive, but so scary I have to stop playing after 15 minutes. I have not finished it yet, and I bought it three months ago.

The atmosphere in this mental asylum is really disturbing. I wish such a game used the Kinect heartbeat sensor just for fun.

Silent Hill 2 was pretty scary, but the controls were horrible, even for a PS2 game.

P.T. is scary, but people really are overrating how scary it is. Once you realize that there is literally no way to die or fail, it takes away a lot of the terror and suspense. Plus, 99% of the scares in the game are lame BOO moments.

You will shit your pants. The buildup is excellent and hopefully you won't find out how to beat it before trying for hours.

I do agree with you, Tempesta di Fuoco that once the storm has settled P.T. isn't really THAT bad. It's biggest scare-attractions are it's near-photoreal graphics and the atmosphere, but the jumpscares do seem a bit cheap at the end, especially the metafiction in the game, but that makes me laugh in a good way.

I will say though, one thing that is extremely effective, that most won't see is that the final loop tends to make a lot of people just loop every time they fear they'll be possessed by the ghost, and while it does reset everything they've made it so when you're in the 51st loop the ghost WILL attack you if you're about to go through the loop-door one more time, and this happens every time you go through the 51st loop. I think it's genius because it makes it so the game never feels safe.

P.T.

Couldn't even finish it.

I remember an old Team Silent interview where they said "Actually, we could make these games much, much scarier. But we don't, because for most people it wouldn't be fun." I thought "No, no, screw those pussies! Go all the way!" But PT totally proved their point to me. I can't even imagine playing an entire 10 hour game like that.

So its just cheap jump scares... that's what horror games should NOT be about.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent for being one of the few games I did actually have to turn off for awhile fearing for my blood pressure. Can't be healthy to be that anxious for that long.

PT for its ability to make a 32 year old man yell like a little girl, and subsequently get yelled at by the wife for making such a noise in the first place.

Silent Hill 2 because it's masterfully written, gets under my skin and doesn't rely on clichés.
A little fear doesn't phase me, I need that psychological element to make it work. I hope Silent Hills can deliver.

Condemned, the whole atmosphere felt wrong in that 'only just detached from reality' way until near the end. The department store was really creepy.

I'm not sure if PT was supposed to be scary, it just annoyed the hell out of me and gave me eyestrain with all the filters and low-fi frame rate, so I didn't bother going to be end. NotAGame, HallwaySimulator.

HOLY FUCK at first glance I seriously thought this was a photo.

And that isn't even the final form. Kojima said they toned down the graphics so people don't immediately find out it's from a AAA studio.

Not really that scary of a game overall, but the
bear
in Condemned 2. You hear some noises, then BOOM. I've never felt so much like I had no options and I was doomed to die right then and there. Just that feeling of hopelessness.... although that was short lived, it's so much better than jump scares.
