GAF's Top 10 games to look out for in 2006

1. Final Fantasy XII
2. Kingdom Hearts II
3. Rogue Galaxy
4. Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria
5. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
6. Final Fantasy VII: CC
7. Seiken Densetsu 4
8. Shadow Hearts 3
9. Phantasy Star Universe
10. Suikoden 1+2

1) I-8 (PS3)
---I just have a feeling its going to be very mediocre or very, very good. I put it at the top because its the game I have the most hope for of (unexpectedly) wowing.
2) TES:Oblivion (PC/X360)
---Fuck yeah.
3) Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
---Its FF, it looks great and its had an overhauled battle system. Alot of hope, here.
4) MGS3:Subsistence (PS2)
---Its MGS3 with updated game mechanics (via virtue of camera system). It looks hot and will be great.
5) Unreal Tournament 2007 (PC/PS3)
---Take UT2004 and add vehicles, better AI, more guns and the most visually impressive engine you'll see, and what do you get? This. Pure sex.
6) Tekken Tag Tournament 2/Tekken 6 (PS3)*
---Its not announced yet, but you know this will be HOT. The chaotic gameplay of the Tekken series in stunning next-generation glory. Yes please.
7) Gran Turismo: Mobile (PSP)
---The series we know and love in portable form. Online.
8) GTA PSP (PSP)
---After the success and critical acclaim of LCS, we know this new game is going to deliver.
9) Super Smash Brothers: New Rev (Rev) *
---Unannounced, but take SSB:M and add online play. 'nuff said.
10) Black (PS2/Xbox)
---For pushing the boundaries of current technology technically, this game gets a nod from me. Could be fun, also...

These are just the games I expect to come out, the list would be totally different if it was of course that will be announced/shown (or have, aka MGS4, Halo3, GT5 etc.)

i know some of them won't come out in 2006, but i can hope

My list, albeit the list of a 2D elitist who thinks the DS/GBA library and future library is better than that of the N64, GC, PS2/PSX, X-Box, and X-Box 360 combined:

1. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (DS) -
It's my favorite series overall.
2. Super Smash Bros. (Revo) -
SSBM is my favorite standalone game. Needs no justification, really.
3. Tales of the Tempest (DS) -
Looks like ToS, which is my third favorite standalone game. Hope abounds.
4. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GC) -
OoT and WW were B- and B games respectively, but Majora's Mask was an A and almost matched OoS and LA (can't touch LttP, though), so I have hope.
5. Final Fantasy VI (GBA) -
My fourth favorite standalone, and would beat Zelda without question if I had confidence in Square's porting abilities. But I don't, due to FFIV.
6. Super Mario Bros. (DS) -
Assuming that Nintendo can still capture the old magic even though it's been 15 years since Super Mario World. DK: Jungle Beat suggests they can, however.
7. Mother 3 (GBA) -
If it actually comes here. And I demand a remix of the New Age Retro Hippie music.
8. Magical Vacation 2 (DS) -
Looked beautiful. I think it's got a 2006 release date, right?
9. Tales of Phantasia (GBA) -
I'm guessing it can't be bad if it's Tales.
10. Final Fantasy III (DS) -
But only if it lets me have female characters (or has them by default) and is released here.

Other notes:

-Since 7, 8, and 10 are all up in the air, I'll list alternates if they were removed; Tales of Phantasia would move to 7, Final Fantasy V (GBA) would take spot 8, Super Princess Peach (DS) would take spot 9, and Children of Mana (DS) would take spot 10.

-Even if Pokemon Diamond/Pearl ends up being a G/S/C/R/S ("A" games, comparatively disappointing among the series but awesome by any other standards) instead of an R/B/Y/FR/LG/E (A+ games), it would still overtake everything from Super Mario Bros. down.

-Final Fantasy III, despite being 3D (and a non-Zelda 3D), is able to make it onto the list because it'll probably play as if it might as well have been 2D anyway. Kind of like Smash Bros., or Valkyrie Profile. Speaking of which...

-If either the PS2 drops to $99 or the PS3 launch actually manages to pull me in (I highly doubt the latter), I'll probably pick up Seiken Densetsu 4 (PS2) and the Valkyrie Profile sequel.
Of the two, though, neither would be able to crack my top 10 or even my top 13 (with the alternates); SD4 looked like it was going to be 3D and I have yet to play a good 3D action RPG, and I worry that VP is going to suffer the same fate as the PSX original: a great game with non-existent replay value. If it did have replay value, though, it would overtake everything from Mother 3 down.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess- The game to top Ocarina of Time? I hope so. There's so much going for it, and I expect a lengthy, wonderful adventure.

2. Super Mario Bros. DS- It'll be 15 years since we last played as the Mario Bros. in a sidescrolling platformer, and 13 years since our last one featuring any one of the Mario Bros. I hope they can recapture the magic of the original series, and that the 3D polygons don't take much away.

3. Kingdom Hearts II- yeah, yeah, I know.

4. Final Fantasy XII.

5. Okami

6. Tales of Phantasia

7. Mother 3. Please?

8. Super Smash Bros. Revolution- I love this series, and it'd be even better if I could play it against other people online.

9. Phantasy Star Universe- Hope Sega can keep up a sort of return to form.

10. Grandia III

That was kinda hard not knowing what any of the next-gen systems' big games really are.

No order:

Gears of War (X360)
Lost Planet (X360) in the us hopefully
Blue Dragon (X360) in the us hopefully
N3:Ninety-Nine Nights (X360) miz said its basically localized
Blazing Angels (X360)
Splinter Cell 4 (X360)
Dead Rising (X360)
DOA4 (X360)
Ryu Ga Gotoku (sp?) (PS2) - Please Sega. Please.
Warhawk (PS3)

This is unbelievably difficult to narrow my choices down to only 10; I'm eagerly anticipating a metric ton of games in 2006.

1. Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
-The first original singleplayer FF in almost 5 long years; there is no question, this is the game I'm dying to play next year. I have a ton of faith in the team, and I really think it may end up being one of the best Final Fantasies ever. Hyperbole for the win!

2. Warhawk (PS3)
-The footage at TGS was fuckin' mindblowing, and this game still has a good 8-10 months of dev time since then. Aside from MGS4, this is, IMO, the best looking next gen game shown so far. Gorgeous visuals, a seemingly solid looking physics engine, an insane amount of enemies onscreen, the best looking water ever created and all running at a super crisp 60FPS. I can't wait!

3. Every Extend Extra (PSP)
-Mizuguchi is the man, and E3 is precisely his forte. After the sheer perfection of Lumines and the insane awesomeness of Meteos, I've no doubt Every Extend Extra will be one of the best PSP games in 2006.

4. Loco Roco (PSP)
-A gorgeous and innovative little gem that looks perfectly suited to the PSP, and will hopefully kick start a much larger amount of original content for the machine. Plus, I cannot watch vids of this game without smiling and wanting to reach into my monitor and play it myself.

5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2)
-MGS. Online. Fucking insane. The crazy positive impressions this game has been getting in last few days is just icing on the cake. This will most likely end up being not only my favorite online game this gen, but also one of the best. Oh, and let's not forget MG and MG2! Good lord yes!

6. Grandia III (PS2)
-Bebpo and Shouta may be frowning, but I adore this series, and it's incomparable battle system is one of my favorites. I really liked GII, so I have high hopes for this as well, and I'm glad Game Arts has gone back to the traditional Grandia games after Xtreme, which was meh to the nth.

7. Gran Turismo: Mobile (PSP)
-I don't even know if this is releasing in 2006, but if it does, I'll likely play no other game more. Kaz has also eluded to wanting to make this PSP installment multiplayer focused, online and all, and that concept is so mindblowingly awesome I have to sit down while pondering it.

8. Valkyrie Profile ~Lenneth~/~Silmeria~ (PSP/PS2)
-I cheated here; I combined 'em together. =p I missed the PSone game, but I don't plan on doing the same again. I've heard so many good things from so many different people, I'm pretty damn confident I won't be disappointed.

9. Final Fantasy III (DS)
-The only FF I've never played, this remake is a must. I'm a bit weary though, as the earlier FF's haven't aged as well as VI and beyond, but this is still a definite purchase and play, day one.

10. Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2)
-I loved the first, and the second looks about seventeen times better. The Tron and Steamboat Willie worlds look too awesome to even believe, and more FF characters redone and revisited is one of my favorite aspects of this series.

The fact that Gears is listed on a lot of these makes my pants tight.

And remember...it's not an FPS. :)
Cliff to say hello to Rod. He is awesome! And you were right on with your Condemned impressions/review. And please send me a UE3 eval :)

Here is my list. No order.

BioShock - SS2 is one of my favorite games of all time. I really hope Irrational can come close to its level of greatness.

Alan Wake - This game was very high on my list at E3 and after talking to Sam Lake (designer) after a couple rounds at Casey's I am sold on it.

Hellgate: London - This game has slowly worked its way up my list. I think I really turned on it when looking into Massive Black and seeing their work on Hellgate. The random FPS levels really has me interested as well.

Gears of War - I trust Epic to deliever on a great game.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Nintendo is finally delievering on what sold me a Gamecube in the first place.

Duke Nukem Forever - I am just curious about what George and company have been doing. I've heard good things from various people as well, which gives me hope that it will deliever.

Black - Gun porn! What more do I need to say.

Shadowrun - I can't say anything...but I am even excited :D

Lost Odyssey - UE3 + Japanese Artists = graphics whores dream. Count me in.

UT2007 - I really enjoyed the maps in UC2, and many of the guys working on UT2007 are from that team :D And it is awesome looking!

8) Winning Eleven 9, I think. Skipped 8...

9) New other sports titles (new hockey -- both brands, Madden 07 -- hope they fix some of my issues with it... even Arena Football has enough interest that I want to at least take a look)

10) I guess Brain Flex too, although I'm not all that familiar with it... really what I'd like to see for the DS is that Play-yan thing.
