I still need to watch:

Flight of the Red Balloon
Doubt
Let The Right One In
Synecdoche, New York
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
The Wrestler
Curious Case of Benjamin Button
My Winnipeg
You, the Living
Up the Yangtze

I suppose living in Mexico isn't that nice if you enjoy good movies. I'm still sure TDK won't be part of the final list, though.

And wasn't Paranoid Park supposed to be 2007? Not like I would know since I watched it in DVD.

Need to see sitll:
Gran Torino
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Wrestler

Burn After Reading

Can't think of any more. Still need to see all the late releases.

I watched extremely little movies this year (at least ones released in 2008), so I can basically sum up all movies I saw in this little list...

1) Wall*e
2) In Bruges

__________from here on you can switch places between most movies, since they're all "ok, but nothing special".

3) Cloverfield
4) Iron Man
5) The Dark Knight
6) Speed Racer

I still have to see... well, pretty much everything. But the ones I enjoyed most so far are Let the Right One In and Wall-E

After that it's probably Burn After Reading. And then The Dark Knight and Iron Man for being very good superhero flicks.

I also saw In Bruges and I don't see where all the appreciation is coming from at all. It's decent, but nothing more.

My personal list:

1. Doubt
2. The Dark Knight
3. WALL-E
4. Milk
5. In Bruges
6. Frost/Nixon
7. Tropic Thunder
8. Iron Man
9. Kung Fu Panda
10. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

if burn after reading is on your top 10 list for the year please never, ever express your criticial opinion on movies again.

I saw Encounters a while ago. It was the first Herzog documentary I've seen (at least I think it was). It was good stuff, but I think Herzog's narration and laughable voice really hurt the film.
Just see Grizzly Man before you pass judgment and Herzog's narration and amazing mellifluous voice. Honestly, you're the first person I've ever heard of calling his voice anything close to "laughable" :\

Top 10 in no particular order

Rambo - total gun porn, best action movie of the decade
The Dark Knight - self explanatory
Wall-E - Pixar's best
Iron Man - great performance by RDJ
Hell Boy 2 - really charming
Burn After Reading
Tropic Thunder - funny movie Tom Cruise lol
Speed Racer - visual explosion
Australia
Gran Torino - Clint is the man

Yeah, I love his voice!

You know what Herzog doc is criminally underseen and underrated? The White Diamond.

No kidding. Herzog himself prefers it to Grizzly Man, and I think I might agree. Some gorgeous stuff in that one.

I can't name 10 good movies I've seen this year, much less the best of the bunch.

But even still, I'd be very surprised if the Dark Knight wasn't on the list. I'm in love with that movie. Besides that Iron Man was good popcorn movie theater fun, and I just saw Grand Torino and loved it.

The next Batman movie should take place 20 years after the Dark Knight and star Clint Eastwood dammit. He's still got it.

Besides that I now have a new worst movie of all time: The Punisher: War Zone. It just knocked RobotJox out of that sad, sad category.

my two favorite superhero movies came out this year- Dark Knight and Hellboy 2 (I love Del Toro and the cool creature design in this movie!)

I havent had a chance to see alot of the oscar buzz movies so I cant really weigh in other than that

The Onion A.V. Club list:

10. Surfwise (dir. Doug Pray)
9. Wendy And Lucy (dir. Kelly Reichardt)
8. Man On Wire (dir. James Marsh)
7. 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days (dir. Cristian Mungiu)
6. Paranoid Park (dir. Gus Van Sant)
5. Milk (dir. Gus Van Sant)
4. The Dark Knight (dir. Christopher Nolan)
3. Synecdoche, New York (dir. Charlie Kaufman)
2. Rachel Getting Married (dir. Jonathan Demme)
1. WALL-E (dir. Andrew Stanton)

I haven't even seen ten films I like this year. Still yet to see The Wrestler, Slumdog Millionaire, Changeling - Benjamin Button's been pushed back to February 6 in the UK. Here's my list:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall-e
3. Iron Man

What? I might have to see this. TDK and Iron Man are actually the only 2008 releases I've seen, and probably will be for a while. My percentage in the IMDB top movie thread is embarrassingly low, I've got to get cracking on the back catalog.

I've not seen 10 good movies this year. Its been kind of a crap year.

Dark Knight would be #1, and then I also really loved RockNRolla and Burn After Reading.
Iron Man, The Hulk, Wanted, were also decent entertainment.

Frost/Nixon was ok I guess. I imagine its a lot better if that event had any actual importance to your life.

Can't think of much else.

1. The Flight of the Red Balloon (Hou Hsiao-Hsien)
2. My Winnipeg (Guy Maddin)
3. A Christmas Tale (Arnaud Desplechin)
4. The Witnesses (Andre Techine)
5. Love Songs (Christian Honoré)
6. Happy-Go-Lucky (Mike Leigh)
7. Synecdoche, New York (Charlie Kaufman)
8. Paranoid Park (Gus Van Sant)
9. Up The Yangtze (Yung Chang)
10. Wall*E (Andrew Stanton)

Saw this last night! Certainly not for all tastes (even for fans of Kaufman screenplays), but I loved it. Might make its way further up on my list as I have more time to think about it, but this year has been so great I'm not sure how to rank everything (which is of course very arbitrary and just-for-fun to begin with).

I also saw Slumdog on Monday night, which I liked, but not one of my ten favorites so far.

My list will probably seem like a joke post to most of gaf but here it goes

In no particular order - only doing five movies btw.

The Dark Knight
Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
Pineapple Express
Zack & Miri Make A Porno
Traitor

1. Frozen River

Only film I couldn't watch to the end. I knew what was going to happen and I still couldn't finish it. How lifelike.

Personally, I believe that there is simply no way that Rambo is that good.

For me,

1. The Dark Knight
2. Iron Man
3. Burn After Reading
4. Changeling
5. The Incredible Hulk
6. Wanted
7. WALL-E
8. Tropic Thunder
9. Bolt

That list might change after Benjamin Button and the Spirit.

The letdowns:

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Indiana Jones (was ok, the actual story just felt...out of touch).
Righteous Kill
Cloverfield (needs a sequel though, they mentioned that the first creature was conceptulaized as a baby)

Guilty Pleasure:

Hancock (could've been more interesting)

LOL:

Babylon A.D.

I'll tell you which one is not making my list. Seven Pounds. More like seven pounds of shit story telling, no character development, and a built up "twist" that isn't a twist at all.

Ugh.

Milk on the other hand was a pretty good film. No surprises and it sticks to the generic blueprint of other true story films but delivers great performances by everyone involved.

Frost/Nixon
coming up next for me.

Wasn't Dark Knight just a remake of Oliver Stone's movie Heat?

Wall E should be in the top 10. Does There will be Blood count or was that late last year? And we should wait for Benjamin Button...

Today I watched Frost/Nixon.

While I still have several films to watch, Frank Langella is by far and away my clear front runner for best actor. This is one of those cases I found myself leaning closer and closer to the film screen and finding myself completely engrossed in his performance. Excellent film. I can't imagine this being not in my top three films.

Anyone else a fan of Vicky Cristina Barcelona? Having seen it last night that's quickly shot up and certainly become one of my favourite films of the year. And really out of left-field.

1. Speed Racer
2. Tropic Thunder
3. Stepbrothers
4. Speed Racer
5. Speed Racer
6. Speed Racer
7. Speed Racer
8. Speed Racer
9. Wall-E
10. The Dark Knight

Wow, I haven't heard of a shitload of these skimpy films being listed. I guess being poor and uninvolved for most the year does that to a guy.

1. Wanted
2. Wall-E
3. Tropic Thunder
4. Quantum
5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Screw the rest.

I saw Burn After Reading last night, and I was surprised that it was so disliked by so many. I thought it was great; it wasn't a classic movie like some of the Coens' stuff, but I thought that it was really damn good and was judged way too harshly.

Yep, if my list were to end today it would be at number four.

Updated mine again. God, I swear this year has been fantastic - I still have a lot to see that I think I'll love!
