GAF's Wii Homebrew Software Thread -- links and discussion

wiisoftwarethread.gif

On suggestion from Dash Kappei, I am splitting the old homebrew thread into two separate threads. For info and discussion on:
  • soft-modding your Wii,
  • USB loading games and installing utilities (like the homebrew channel)
  • Useful tools
  • A place to discuss general scene news and updates
- please refer to the old thread. If you're just looking to soft-mod your Wii, jump straight to Clipper's very awesome and useful Homebrew Tutorials Wiki...

This thread is exclusively for info and discussion about original Wii homebrew software and applications. Just like last time - this is NOT a place to discuss illegal ROMs or pirated Wii games. Don't go there please!

To get a taste for some of the games and apps I'm about to link to below, check out this video:

And these are just a start -- games and apps that I felt noteworthy -- if you guys find something you think I should include in the OP - please feel free to PM me and I'll get it done. Without further ado...

Can someone help me setup MPlayerCE in Greek language? I couldn't get it working at all, tried replacing fonts and stuff, but it was no good. So I ended up using Geexbox. But that doesn't play DVDs so I need to rip the movies first. I'd appreciate any help. I mean, I need it to display Greek subtitles. I don't care about its interface.

Been playing around with the NES emulator lately, and it's really nice to have all my games in one spot in digital form. I really like the Tecmo Super Bowl hacks, but was disappointed to find that the most recent roster hack doesn't allow you to switch a team from CPU to Man for season purposes.

I plan on dipping into the SNES/Genesis stuff once I buy the classic controller pro and get around to digging the game carts out of storage to see what I have.

Hmm I'm not sure how you'd do that but it says in the changelog he added support for right-to-left languages, so if he's gone that far you'd think he'd have included a way of doing it. Mplayer CE is an amalgam of GeexboX and an earlier version of MPlayer too -- if you can figure out how GeexboX implements it, there may be a way to copy it over or something...?

Are there coverflow-like interfaces for the emulators? I'd be interested in them if there were. It'd be great if it was like what we use for Wii games where you can see the front and back of the box as well as the cartridge.

Fuzzy said:

No, and there probably won't ever be. Most of the emulators only load games from a file list, they don't even support cover art. The PC versions they are ported from don't support it either, and it would be a huge addition to write from scratch.

There actually is a fan hack for FCEU and SNES9X GX for cover support out there on gbatemp. So you can look into that I guess, though it's nowhere near refined as the cover options on some of the various USB Loaders.

I don't know how feasible it would be but couldn't someone theoretically poke around inside the source for something like WiiFlow and meld it with the file browsing routines in the Snes9x source or whatever so that calls for a file browser would return the 3d loader?

I don't really know any C - but I can imagine one poss issue would be that one program sets itself up to use memory in one way, while the other does its own thing - Snes9x's basic backbone menu stays resident and is easily called when you're in the middle of a game whereas trying to hack in a coverflow menu might be a nightmare...

if I had unlimited free time and wasn't so tired after work these days, this is the kind of shit I would look into playing around with..

I really wish MarioWar wasn't so completely crash-happy. I love the damn thing, but both PSP and Wii versions lock-up and freeze and make me miss playing the rock-solid Xbox version on my mates chipped Xbox :/

How is MPlayerCE?

It's quite great. I play a lot of movies and programs directly from my shared folder in my PC using SMB, and plays absolutely fine.

The only thing you should keep in mind is that (obviously) it doesn't support HD videos and some High Res using H264 codec will play with some hiccups.

Also, GexGEO (Neo-Geo AES/MVS emulator) should be included.
Even if the project seems to be abandoned, it still plays close to 99% perfection many many games and has raster effect support (so you can play Over The Top, NeoDrift, Trash Rally...).
I just need such a small work to be "perfect" (100% Classic Controller support and better games compatiblity for example) that I wish someone else picked up on the source...

SDL MAME has started anew and you can already play many classics, old project was unfeasible (minutes to load ROMS and such) but this one is being updated almost every week.

FRODO (C-64) has been recently updated as well.

I recently completed Syoban Action on the Wii, for the first time. One of the high points of my life. :lol

I suggest you all try it. It's kind of like a puzzle game, in a way.

Also, MPlayer CE was amazing, until I got my high def TV and hooked my PC up to it recently. If you are using a standard definition TV, or you don't have any other means of playing videos on your high def TV, then MPlayer CE is pretty great.

I deleted homebrew some time ago when the new update came out. Was afraid of dying wii:lol . i might try again. There is so much fun to be had.

Has there ever been a console that is so modifiable? I mean I have seen people changing colours of wii menu and all kind of crazy things.

^ the 'dying wii' thing had nothing to do w/ homebrew. it was a problem anyone could have.

the covers addition to snes9x looks cool, i hope someone can make it look nicer.

Nabs said:

Exactly.

I'd love to try the cover plu-in myself, is there a nice database online of SuperNES covers? SuperFamicom sure are nicer but SNES one are... "widescreen" :D
Suck I have to resort to play with Snes9x even the games I buy on the Wii Shop thanks to crappy 50Hz conversion. At least some are nowhere near as bad as the genesis/Megadrive releases.

Has anybody tried the last update of the Yabause Saturn emu? Is it possibile to use original discs with it (if the emulation is decent anyway)?

Also, it seems online multiplayer is coming for Quake/Doom Wii?
Because the Quake port is ace, best use of pointer/nunchuck for a Wii FPS yet, fully customizable.
Developers should just copy/paste everything these guys have done as far as Wii FPS controls go.

Super Mario War rocks, it's a shame there's no support for GC controllers.

Ah, I was going to ask about this, but thats a shame. Still, the most serious problem is the frequent freeze crashes that really need to be fixed before I could recommend it to anyone that doesn't want to be resetting their Wii every other match :/

I'd say the original Xbox was far more moddable. Mine is still sitting with Xbox Media Center as it's dashboard and a nice little set of emulators.

I can answer the second part. The Wii doesn't have a laser with a wavelength capable of reading CDs meaning reading Saturn discs is out of the question.

Oh, I didn't know that.
Kinda crazy.

New version of Wii64 is out, and it's actually worth using now that you can customize the controls. Oh and Goldeneye and Perfect Dark work (very slowly, judging by the trailer) in case you're a fan of extremely dated shooters. http://emulatemii.com/

c64-network.org released.
Network play Frodo's (C64 emulator) update :)

Wiibrew.org said:
c64-network.org is a Commodore 64 emulator written by Christian Bauer (http://frodo.cebix.net). It was ported to the Wii by Simon Kagstrom, and many C64 games are fully playable on the Wii with it. So go ahead and beat your friends in International Karate, Boulder Dash or Bomb Jack... This version is not the same as Troy Davis implementation, but Troys work is available in a branch in the subversion tree.

The emulator works best in 480i mode. It runs perfectly fine in 576i mode as well, but does not utilize the full resolution. This is an SDL issue, and will not be fixed until SDL-Port supports it. Sound support is slightly buggy, but usable. The emulation itself is not perfect, so not all games will run under Frodo. Unfortunately, I cannot do very much about this since I haven't written the emulator - just ported it. If you have multiple versions of a game, try each of them as often at least one will work.

Also, it seems SEGA SATURN's Yabause Wii is going to release beta5 this week, this project is really hitting lightning development speed, quite a few games are playable now.
Can't wait for a stable release :D

(also HBB is now on 0.3.8, if anybody like me was behind, now supports .ogg music)
I wish searching worked, since this is the only reason this thread has no chance at the moment, people can't bother with it if they don't know it exists, so... Oh well, I'll try to support it in the meantime.

Megacode downloader got an update as well.

Has anyone gotten Tyrian to work? I used to love that game (and made my own custom ship pixel art as a kid, good times) but I can't get it to work on my Wii (basically getting some black screen with lots of error messages in white text when I start the homebrew).

Does anybody know some crazy shit/debug modes you can do in games through Ocarina/Megacodedownloader? I'd love to try out the most interesting/peculiar ones.

Is there a code to allow for Classic Controller use in Metal slug Anthology?
If not, would it be feasible to make one?
God I'm sick of having my Wavebird hooked up, especially with my new shiny CCpro black.

Awesome thread.

Ditto.
Support it, come here asking question and whatnot.
It's difficult making it stay alive without the search function since many people don't even know it exists.

What's the difference between Quake Wii and QuakeGX?

IIRC Quake Wii is the older port with just software rendering. GX goes for hardware accelleration, better gfx, framerate, more customizable.

Go for GX or the Pico GX version, which has Mp3 support, USB keyboards support and (iirc) better netcode in development.

Totally. I randomly stumbled upon this thread from Google and I was like "WTF! I've never seen this thread before" and at first thought it was some old obsolete thread, then noticed the very recent post dates.

Great thanks. I downloaded the GX version I think (from the Homebrew Browser), but when I tried to load it after it finished downloading it froze at a black screen. I thought maybe it just takes a long time to load from SD card and I was impatient. I'll try it again later.

Wow, I didn't know half of these games were for Wii.

I remember playing Helium Boy, Super Mario War and Syoban on PC ages ago.

(along with the ports of commercial games like Keen and Wolfenstein)

I'm automatically subscribed to any thread I post in. I thought that was the default option, perhaps I set it so ages ago.

I went and (re)downloaded it from the HBB myself and it works perfectly?
It didn't actually take much time to load at all, like a Wiiware game I guess, mere seconds.
Maybe the download crapped on you. It happens to me sometimes, aspecially when I update old apps/games.

On a side note, I used to love Rick Dangerous on the Amiga as a kid, I need to try this Wii port if only for nostalgia's sake :)

how the hell do I go on reading from where left off last time?
And now that the search is dead, can you even go directly to where your posted on a thread?

That's... interesting.
But I probably won't ever use it unless someone figures out how to get it to work with USB Loaders.
Once you go HDD, it's hard to go back.
