Gained some respect for Geoff Keighley

It's funny how the Dorito's thing blew up so much. It very much signals the fact that there's so many "new" people to the industry.


At every years E3 and various other events, Geoff has the biggest balls of any journalist out there. He doesn't ask questions, he verbally jousts in such an eloquent manner. It's like art, watching the PR shields activate, then Geoff circling back with his lance of truth...poised to make one more attempt.
 
Geoff's a great spokesman for the hobby and valuable asset to the industry.

But he's still the Doritos Pope. Which at this point I don't consider a pejorative, it's like a nickname.
 
I thought he went really soft on Don Mattrick. He was good in the Reggie interview although maybe a little hostile. I'm wondering why the big difference in interview styles when Don Mattrick seemingly had just as much or more to answer for.
 
He did ask about games and things that people here generally want to know: Last Guardian, Wii u poor third party situation, drm situation and many other things.

He did not do the whole:
Geoff: so how awesome is your new title?
Random dev: I'm tellin you Geoff, it's super awesome!
Geoff: really? That awesome,
Random dev: yes beyond awesome!
Geoff: that's awesome to hear, thanks
Random dev: awesome
Geoff: okay, our awesome coverage here at gametrailers continues, back to you Amanda and DK Money Shizzle!
 
This was the first time i saw him asking some tough questions (even though they were all answered with the usual empty words) so he gained some respect from me.
 
Dorito Dew pretends to be Walter Cronkite around Reggie then transforms into Sean Hannity at the Republican convention around everyone else.
 
Geoff is okay but it gets old listening to interviews with these slick PR hacks that are just doing nothing spin, talking points, etc. Reggie, Peter Moore, Don Mattrick. Reminds me of election season and listening to all the bullshit from politicians and the hacks that work for them.
 
I've always liked him but Geoff really impressed me this year. I watched the stream most of the day on Monday and was taken aback by how frank a lot of the questions he asked were and pushed for solid answers even when they tried to avoid them. I saw him grilling devs to comment on the power differences between XBO and PS4, commenting on the lack of quality from EA, all the while being professional. Him and the GTTV crew killed it. It felt like E3 finally got some real, respectable coverage.
 
Geoff is for the most part good at interviewing and does ask better questions than others but has always been rude to Reggie. The last few years he's asked him "where's mario, zelda, donkey kong, people want these games", now this year he says something like "all you have is mario zelda and donkey kong". He asked Reggie something like "what is it like to be you, are you depressed, are you sad". I think it's fine to ask hard hitting questions but don't be rude or insult the person you are interviewing. When interviewing anyone else he is great, with Reggie he is a bully.
 
Geoff is a fine interviewer, despite selling off his credibility for snacks, soda and giraffes from time to time.

Does anyone know exactly where the doritos pope meme was started? Tried searching gaf, but the expression seemed well established in the oldest posts.
 
I dont know why but I dont like Reggie, professionally that is. He seems like this very competitive person. Meaning in order for him to win you have to look bad. Even when Geoff brings up the lack of third party support at the show he refuses to admit even that. As if somehow all of these third party games are going to just appear without any publisher or dev promoting their game. No matter the question Reggie's answer was to try and steam roll over Geoff with a forceful sounding answer.

Furthermore, I think he is wrong about Nintendo driving third party support. Nintendo will sale units with their new titles but that doesnt mean that will sell third party publishers on the platform. The only true thing Reggie said was that people buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games. Thats how it is, thats how it will always be for better or for worse. Even those games (I.e, Pikman, Smash Bros, etc) looks just like a standardized version of what Nintendo has been selling for a while. At a certain point you could say that about any of the big 3. Thats fine, I certainty have games that I love and play even though the sequel is this very standard affair. But I dont see EA suddenly seeing that and deciding that they should port Frostbite over.

..just a shame it's so one sided. If you're going to lay into Nintendo for the software situation......

...you should be just as brutal laying into Sony and Microsoft execs every bit as hard in regards to DRM, BC, online multiplayer fees etc.

Yep. The questions asked are good, but you never get anything new from the answers.
 
In recent memory, he's been on fire at every E3. It's good to see him ask the questions.

Sadly this is offset by the exclusive looks, where he sells the integrity he has for page views.

I agree with this, watching him talk to Reggie last year kind of pissed me off, the way he handled the conversation. Its good to have some hard hitting questions but you shouldnt argue with their answer (referring to when he was talking to reggie about arkham). Not even sure I want to watch this year's.
 
Was about to post this the other day. He has been a very good host, asking a lot of good questions. So he gained a lot of respect from me.

ALTHOUGH! He was tougher to Reggie & I think MS deserved more critizism than they got.
 
These interviews are hard to watch.
The EA mouthpiece weasling out of anti used and drm.

The Sony mouthpiece stammering when he tries to weasel himself out of the fact that most publishers will end up blocking used games on ps4 too
Trying to spin paywalls for online as 'added value' (the dumbest thing I've ever heard)

Well kudos to keighley for hammering at these quesitons and actually making these clowns look bad (except for paywall of course where he didn't call him on his bullshit)
 
Was he ever disliked? I always liked him because you can really see that he is passionate about the topic he works in and always asks the important questions no matter what.
 
It's weird how the GameTrailers video player is generally shit for, y'know... watching videos! But it served me damn well this year when it came to live streaming the conferences. Very dependable stuff. Eurogamer's set-up was total crap in comparison and I ditched it quick-sharp.

And yeah, Geoff's coverage inbetween the shows was a pleasure to watch for the most part. Loved the Jack Tretton interview especially. I don't really have a problem with the guy; the only time I've seen him come across as a royal choad was that super-awkward Angry Joe meeting.
 
I really have no complaints, he consistently asked all the questions that I wanted to know about.

These are always slightly uncomfortable to watch because these guys are used to the gaming industry giving them softball questions and just being happy to play a game before it's out. So when they get asked hard questions, they seem to go into PR repeat if the answer is unpleasant. You can tell the questions that make them squirm and the ones that answer without effort.
 
Geoff deserves the praise he gets in this thread, but wasn't he always like this. I mean asking the tough questions and stuff. It's his thing and it didn't just start with this year's E3.

I lost a lot of respect for him with Dorito gate and the way he treated angry joe a few years back.

But I gained alot of respect for him yesterday. He wasnt affraid to ask the hard questions and really press on to get the truth out there.

Thought Keighley let Tretton off lightly. How can Tretton not know what is happening with Agent? Also, Keighley asked him about KH3 and Versus exclusivity and Tretton brushed him off with some waffle about the number of exclusives. Wish Keighley had put Tretton on the spot.

There was a recorded interview with Mattrick from before the MS conference.
 
I agree, these interviews are really good, and I always really enjoyed Geoff. Yeah, sometimes he is a bit greasy and unnecessary mainstream, but then I remember that he is working for a site called GAMETRAILERS, and then I feel dumb.
 
People who start their answers with "You know, the fact of the matter is.." usually need those 2 extra seconds to allow their brain to make up some dodgy bullshit answer.. and Reggie does that a LOT.

Disagree. I think lots of people practice public talking and thus are very self aware what they say. Talking to a interviewer is inherently fake and bullshit. It's not real, so if you think that, well duh.
