Galactic Civilizations III officially announced (+ 64-bit req; early access plan)

I wasn't just that Elemental was bad - and it was probably the worse game I've bought on release since Elite 2, which flat out crashed on boot up). At least you could get a full refund for that.

My issue was that the sequel, Fallen Enchantress, was still bugged to hell and considerably flawed and yet rather than keep patching that they released yet another expansion pack (Legendary Heroes) which finally pushed the game into the 'probably alright' zone. I understand they had money issues due to the catastrophic failure but it really felt like short changing fans by so quickly rushing to another expansion pack.

And the least said about Demigod, the better...

Basically wait and see would be the best advice anyone can take here. Stardock's reputation has really gone downhill over the last few years.

Okay. I picked up GC2 on Humble Bundle and am looking forward to playing it. Now... about that Founder's Edition...

Does this not make anyone else mad? You are paying $30 for beta access and a little forum badge. You still have to pay $39.99 for the actual game! I am sorry, but this doesnt sit right with me.

Anyone else?

Pretty sure that includes the game. It says $10 off because it's $40, and the game will be $50 when it's released. A bit confusing.

Dude... You get the game for 10$ less because you already bought it if you paid for that tier.

Um. I'm pretty sure that includes the game too. Founder's Edition is likely a preorder only available for a limited time. They are offering beta access and a 10 dollar discount on the game's upcoming 50 dollar price tag to encourage early adopters. They are in no way saying you pay 30 bucks for beta access and a forum badge then have to pay another 40.

The way they handled Elemental actually has given me so much more confidence in the company after the Demigod disaster. I'll definitely be pre-ordering this once some firm dates get announced.

Good news! GalCiv2 is awesome, I was looking forward to a sequel.
I just hope the game will still be playable on low-end (yet 64-bits) PC.

Traditionally Stardock games have been very low req- if you can play LH on your PC you most likely can run GalCiv 3.

Oh- graphics card must be DX10-11 capable.

I can't decide if I'd prefer Turn Based Tactics combat or Real Time Tactics combat.

All I know is I hope it isn't auto-resolve/CombatViewer exclusively.

Since there aren't any other threads, thought I would post these here, courtesy of PCGamer.com. The first screenshots of the game. Hexagon map! Pretty excited now!

And I hope the characters in the Diplomacy screens are animated, not required, but it does at a lot of flavor when talking to them.
so

pretty

Oh and from that link there was also apparently a preview from them: http://www.pcgamer.com/uk/previews/...preview-64-bits-of-hexes-ideologies-and-more/

http://www.pcgamer.com/uk/previews/galactic-civilizations-iii-preview-64-bits-of-hexes-ideologies-and-more/ said:
GalCiv II’s alignment system has been completely jettisoned, and in its place is a new Ideology system. “It’s not a tech tree,” Boyer explains. “It’s actually three separate pyramids, and you will be able to earn Ideology points through improvements, or more interestingly through planetary events, through cosmic events.” Each cosmic event will require you to make ideological choices, which generate points used to unlock new abilities and most cultural traits.

Many of the familiar races from the game, such as the Krynn Consulate and the Iconian Refuge, will return alongside new races. The Iridium Corporation, for instance, was always part of the series’ lore but never a playable race. Boyer notes that “they are essentially ultra-capitalists, like if Apple was a race that was going to take over the universe”.

After working on the GalCiv II expansions, Boyer decided that he didn’t want continue as an art director, and made his case to CEO Brad Wardell that he should be a game designer. Wardell agreed, and Boyer was handed the reins to the franchise and a new sequel. Boyer feels the weight of his new responsibility. “My biggest focus as the designer of the game at this point is to more or less not screw up.”

“All of the data side of the game will be available in an editor,” Boyer explains, “and I think that the people who have gone through the hoops to make crazy mods in GalCiv II, their heads are going to explode.” He’s also prepared for the dark side of user-generated content. “I’m ready for an assault of penis-shaped ships – that goes without saying.”

The team has a long way to go, and Boyer quoted the familiar “when it’s ready” line when asked about possible release dates for alphas, betas and beyond. “This game has to be perfect,” he says. “We’ve had games in the past where bad things happened because they had to be out a certain time. So this game will be released when it’s done, and we’re going to make sure it’s awesome.” Which means you might want to add a fifth X here for "exhale," as we might be waiting a while.

Interesting.

Looking good.

Galciv have come a long way since being OS/2's single exclusive. I've never played any of the games, but those screenshots make me want to try it out.

Ah, pics. So far it looks like GC2 with a nicer interface and hex maps. Looks fairly far along in development already.

Ok, so I've never played any Galactic Civ games, but I do love Civ V - easily my most played game on steam. Is Galactiv Civ similar? Better? I definitely like the space / sci-fi of it.

Just wondering if should roll the dice on the $40 tier.

My advice is to wait till this winter sale on steam and pick up Gal Civ 2 on steam for like $5. If you like that, then you can do whatever you want with your money :P

Jumping for $40 might leave you disappointed as if it's anything like the 2nd, it's a bit more complicated and in depth than V ever was, and is harder to get into, but more rewarding in my mind once you do.

I like it a hell of a lot more than civ v for way too many reasons to list.

StarDrive had amazing art direction, too bad the game was kinda eh and then the whole mess with the dev happened :(

Guys...I am a PC exclusive gamer and have been for years. Thing is, I have never played any of these "space" games. Galactic Civ, Sins of a Solar Empire, Freespace, Star Citizen, Privater...

I kinda want to give them a try, thing is i don't really know where to start or what to expect. Help?

I'd recommend starting with Endless Space. its not quite as deep or demanding as the other games and the most accessible. Its also so far the prettiest :)

Well, I got the $100 tier.

GalCiv plays like a Civ game, with some differences.

GalCiv II is kinda an old game at this point, though the AI holds up well- some of the design decisions are maddening in retrospect though. From the sounds of the dev blogs, the current Stardock team understands what didn't work in GalCiv II.

As for Civ V, if you want to get the producer of Civ V's next game- look up At the Gates. (he's still consulting with Stardock as well)

I'm excited to see how the end game is for At The Gates, as that's what they claim will be changed extensively for it and more often than not is a snoozefest in a lot of civ-likes.

Yup I'm super looking forward to Gal Civ III because II is hard to play at this point with some odd design choices (that won't be fixed at this point obviously.) Besides graphics being dated (albeit serviceable). Though I'm sure it'll be nice and polished in the sequel. Those screenshots looking real good. Will buy in when beta is out and/or have the spare cash to splurge on the founder elite edition.

I should probably point that many of these games you are mixing under the generic label "these space games" actually play quite differently and in some cases are not even into the same genre.

I'd recommend Freelancer as well. Controls well with a mouse. It's not as good as earlier games in the series, but it's not terrible either.

Those games you are mentioning are quite different between each other. Free Space, Star Citizen and Privateer are space sims. Sins is a 4x/RTS hybrid, and Gal Civ is pure 4x.

If you want more games like Gal Civ, check out Endless Space or the oldies but to this day extremely fun Master of Orion 2 and Alpha Centauri.
