Galloping Ghost Arcade (Brookfield, IL) acquires Primal Rage 2, streams hours of game

You played Primal Rage 2 at Chuck E Cheese? How?

Peoria, IL had a cabinet. I knew that it was the second game due to the transforming stuff. I believe GameFan covered it? Or maybe even something before them?

This is the same place that had things like the JP shooting game and a bunch of other really weird oddities that shouldn't have been there, like MK2.

Before arcade games are released, at various points during development, games undergo location testing. Think of it like an unannounced beta. Everything we used to know about primal rage 2 came from memories of location testing.

Street fighter iv had a memorable high profile location testing in austin, texas.

the source was found.

it's been pressed into carts and sold and everything.

This looks like the original announcement, posted April 1, 2003...

Which arcade was that, out of curiosity?

This is awesome because im going there next week with a couple friends. Its our first time so this will be pretty rad. But at the same time i remember hating Primal Rage.

Well it's not quite complete, but it's playable. It plays pretty much like MK2. It does look a lot better than the 8-bit ports, which makes sense, considering the Lynx was quite a ways more powerful than either system (and actually more in line with, say, the Genesis or SNES).

Actually, there is a lot of interesting history with regards to canceled games on these atari systems. Virtually everything from the 3DO port of UMK3 save the sourcecode has been found, too.

EDIT: I wrote an article on Fight for Life a long while back:

the version shipped wasn't the final version!

There was a 3DO port of Ultimate MK3? Would have loved to seen that. And Fight for Life... that was an interesting concept, but didn't Eternal Champions have a similar story?

When I was a kid, I played a lot of Primal Rage just because of the dinosaurs.
I don't really remember how clunky the control of the game were or if the combo were hard to execute.
I would like to try that second game, but I'm too far from IL :(

I remember they even had toys out for this game. Shame it never came out, haha.

My theory is, Midway Games bought Atari Games when this was in development, and they probably cancelled it to avoid any potential cannibalism of Mortal Kombat (Ultimate MK3 was fresh in arcades, and MK4 had to be well into development at this point).

There are old screenshots from egm from back in the day showing the hud with snes-like features (names below life bar rather than in it, yellow circles for victory status instead of Dragon marks) which lets you know it's the 3do version.

As for the plot, that was a common fighting game story of the time, haha. Time killers was basically the same.

This looks pretty fun actually. Can you switch between human and dino mid-combo a la Tekken Tag? I can't believe they got to this stage of prototype and never released it.

Yes. You can do chain combos and cancel into the transformation. They'll finish it with the auto combo.

The auto combo is all the switches do normally. You can only truly play both forms in the same match using the 3rd variant.

This is friggin' awesome. I never thought I'd see the day.

Since I don't have time to watch through the entire gameplay streams right now, could someone tell me if any fatalities are shown? If so, could I have some timestamps for where they occur on the streams?

This exact version (.36) was dumped around 10 years ago. It has never been correctly emulated and probably won't be.

Not even primal rage 1 is correctly emulated because developers refused to release info about copy protection.
Mame version has issues. Best version is the one in midway arcade treasures

Best is relative because even that one is glitched due to the copy protection.

I used to play the original Primal Rage in Niles, IL once in awhile.

Somehow I mistakenly assumed Primal Rage 2 had been released and wasn't much of a big deal. I also assumed it had long ago been emulated in MAME.

Wow was I ever wrong, I had no clue it was only an incredibly rare prototype.

Great to see it showed up near Chicago.

haven't been back since they added mars matrix, so I've been meaning to head back out there. 30 minutes from Chicago without a car is kinda hard, but this might make it worth it.

Also shoutouts to Tony's across the street, man them pancakes is good!

Great ribs too, you basically get a full slab if you order the half, and damn near two slabs if you order the full.

Might have to head down to Galloping Ghost soon and check this out.

Will be visiting friends in chicago late July and hoping to make a stop there. Sounds like a sweet place.

It's more fun when it's less busy since there's not a lot of space to move around due to the amount of cabinets. Weekend nights are also like body odor city.

Wow, this is amazing. Growing up all I heard was rumors about this game. To finally see it footage of it being played is surreal. That transforming humans thing is weird as hell, though.
