Game environments that have stuck with you...

Each of the islands in Zelda Wind Waker - it was stunning to stumble on a completely new island every once in a while, while simply exploring the sea. It was especially stunning since with Wind Waker, it finally felt like I was free explore the world - after Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, which didn't give me that feeling at all.

Basically all of FFIX, but Village of Dali especially sticks in my mind because it looked so charming, and had one of the best music scores. Also Black Mages Village.

All of the original Unreal. I was completely taken in by it. Return to Na Pali also had its moments.

Some of the levels in the original Timesplitters popped into my head on reading the thread title. Also the beach from the first Jak & Daxter. I loved spending time there and splashing across the water... :(

The whole fucking game.

My most favourite and, in my opinion, one of the most realised and original game worlds ever created. It felt so damn real while still being so heavily fantasy based. It's the one game world concept that shatters me that it was never explored in official literature, other games, or even film.

So much potential let go.

Surprised SkyTown from Metroid Prime 3 hasn't been posted already.
That's because Skytown, aside from the music and some puzzles, was boring. The color palate was bland, and each station looked the same as the last one. I'd give almost any other Metroid Prime environment the nod over Skytown.

Many of the ones I'd choose have been said already.

Phendrana Drifts
Sanctuary of Zi'Tah
Many parts in SOTC

Music plays a huge part in each of these as well.
EDIT: Pai Pai Master, Lufaise Meadows is fantastic as well. :D

I really loved the world of Viking: Battle For Asgard. It's really great when you can play an open world game that isn't set in New York or Miami.

No game has ever pulled me in as deeply, or caused me to think about it when not playing, as much as this one...

fallout3__5_.jpg

Far Cry 2 was a nice experience, with a very immersive environment without a doubt, but the desolation and destruction of Washington in Fallout 3 has literally caused me to wake up in the middle of the night several times thinking about it over the past 6-7 months. It's uncomfortable, eerie, and entirely unforgettable....

Blizzard has done a really nice job with WoW and its various zones. Heres Grizzly Hills from the latest xpac.

Really liked questing in this zone, my favorite of the xpac if I had to name one.

Asheron's Call

The world always felt mysterious, and you could find something new everytime you played because the world was that large. So unbelievably awesome. Adventurous in a way no other MMO has ever been before or since. How I miss it.

Now that I think back...it really was unsettling. Funny how that never really struck me that way when playing the game.

Santuary Fortress is a beautiful showcase of great game design and it redeemed the whole Metroid Prime 2. The boss battle with Quadraxis was pretty epic as well.

Well, all of SMG easily for me, but I also have to say Sonic Unleashed's Apotos.

I'm not gonna lie, I've always been a huge fan of the Greek Isles. I have had Greek Isle calendars gracing my room for years now. I honestly don't know why I like them so much either, but that is besides the point. When all that Unleashed stuff got leaked in mar/apr of 08, I was like WHOAH when I saw ApotosI mean I was like "Sonic is in MYKONOS, FUCK YEAH!" and all that jazz. When the game actually came out, I actually took a good 12 minutes to walk Act 2, the first real level, before actually playing it for reals. Petros the pelican was there, the sea was there, it was Mykono alright! Lighting looks so pretty too, I mean I just love the artstyle they chose for the game period, it is just such a pretty game! Anyways, when I played the level for reals, it felt like Green-Hill for the first time ever. Apotos was the new Green Hill to me, it just clicked. It was Pure Sonic, then at the same time it was totally Greek, and I was loving every moment of it.

Another pick for me would have to be something that needs no pictures, and that is the Courtroom in the Ace Attorney games. Sometimes when you get really into it, that simple sprite BG can be the most immersive world seen... Truly awesome when it happens, I know it happened during my play-through of AA3!

Lastly, I would have to say both NiGHTS games and Flower as a whole.

That area was cemented for me after the last case in the first PW. Manfred von Karma transformed that unimportant little courtroom into an oppressive battleground, continually shutting me down. I never really felt the same way about it after that as it become a source of traumatic flashbacks for me. :lol

The Hive (and more specifically the Mortuary) from Planescape Torment.

Some screenshots I found on google... I'd shoot some myself but I'm not on my home pc at the moment.

Glad to see some FFXI love in here. Lufaise and Zi'Tah, two of my favorites, have already been mentioned, but these three are also equally breathtaking:

Vana'diel was an amazing world, and screw the haters, FFXIV is gonna bring it.

Motherfucking hell yes

Glad to hear I am not the only one!

There were others like Banjo Kazooie and so fourth but these two games were the top two for me. :D
Hell yes.

And the guy that posted the water racing level from SMG on the first page wins as well. Those stages are the best. I love the water. :D

Sonic CD, Jet Set Radio/Future, NightS into Dreams, Super Mario Galaxy, the Metroid Prime series, and The Windwaker are all just monuments to these kinds of environments. Granted I seem to like more of the surreal stuff, but seriously, with looks like these:

Eh, that's the opposite of how I feel. It's really out of place and seems like a Howling Fjord 2.0 to me. It doesn't make sense since it's further north but has little to no snow, it has slightly more trees than HF and it has the least memorable quests out of all the zones.

Best zones in WoW are Netherstorm & Shadowmoon Valley.

All of the following games:
Halo
Resident Evil 2
Halo 2
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Half-Life 2 + Episodes
Mass Effect
Bioshock
FarCry 2

It's too bad all my SS are on my unplugged computer. I don't have any good environment screens hosted.

This place was always cool,

Nexus armor as a consolation prize for not having cool environmental screens

Final Fantasy IX has probably my favorite game world amongst all the final fantasies, along with FFXII. It's just so lively.

Oblivion

Fallout 3

All my favorite places have already been said, but The Vale from the latest Prince of Persia totally deserves a mention to me.

Killzone 2- mining planet level, I loved the snipers moving around in the dusty distance

24obk8m-1.jpg

Thief- Cathedral, the site of many close calls and much shivering

272747.jpg

MGS4- Eastern Europe- an undercooked level, gameplay wise, but it had such beautiful atmosphere

EASTERNEUROPEMIDTOWNSSECTOR.jpg

Silent Hill 2- the dilapidated hotel that was host to probably the most affecting climax ever

sh2.jpg

God of War series- too many cool vistas to list

eowjuhfrlr.jpg

Clive Barker's Undying- this game was full of unforgettable settings. The quiet creepiness of the Irish landscape being one

undying-1.jpg

Uncharted- the submarine, I just sort of hung around that small area for like 20 minutes ogling it

uncharted-3.jpg

Mother 2- Moonside- mindfuck

eb-welcometomoonside.jpg

Warhawk- Eucadia- I love the old-timey architecture below, the mountains, flying under the bridges, flying out into the ocean, and binoculating bitches from 5 miles away

warhawk9-1.jpg

I didn't really like the game itself much, but speaking purely about memorable environments...

Balamb%20Garden.jpg

Panzer Dragoon Saga really was a powerhouse back in the days. Everything was realtime and those freaking huge dragons! I just drolled myself for hours.

GuardianDragon-3.jpg

It is amazing what Half Life 2 can do in real time with an outdated engine in low end machines! Amazing graphics and physics.

ep2_1.jpg

Warhawk is still one of the best lookink games out there, and has such huge environments!

warhawk9-1.jpg

Being a fan of everything post-apocalyptic, how couldn't i ove Fallout 3 :P

fallout-3-ss-26.jpg

Guild Wars had some of the best scenarios i've seen in any MMO. And it also runs smoothly in low end machines! But two of the best that sticked in my mind are the Pre-Searing and the Tomb of the Primeval Kings.

gw056.jpg

gw005.jpg

Ok, the king of the kings. Silent Hill 2. No one can ignore the feeling of uneasiness when entering for the first time in the apartments. I think i don't need to explain myself more.

screenie3.jpg

FFVIII is of course the best answer. Accompanied by the music pretty much every single place is memorable, even the world map and the sewers in Deling City.

So many on Sanitarium:

5396bly.jpg

I need to replay this game.

Everything in Neverhood...such a unique place to visit.

neverhood08.jpg

The city in Beneath a Steel Sky, the first time getting to the mid level city and browsing all the stores was so great, I really felt like I was exploring this weird place in the future.

Beneath_a_Steel_Sky_-_2.jpg

Ok, and to add a game that's not a point 'n click adventure, Panzer Dragoon Saga, the underwater passage in Uru and the town of Zoah:

Urupassagelocat.jpg
liberaldlocat.jpg

Something about the game 'Outcast' was really cool and stuck in my mind.

I'd want a sequel...but I'm not sure a newer game could recreate the feel, I think the low quality / low res graphics are what game it the werid surreal feel.
