No love for Magical Puzzle Popils/Popils The Blockbusting Challenge?

Pretty much my all-time fave GG game. Made by the same guy who made Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands. Get it!

The prince looks like Luke Skywalker on this boxart.

Oh yeah, just replace the sword with a lightsaber and you're done. The Chuck Rock box looks terrible BTW.

A tip for the GameGear: If the display looks washed out or the audio doesn't sound good (low volume IIRC) you can fix this by replacing all the electrolytic capacitors. Need to try this myself some day.

Vampire- Master of Darkness is a decent Castlevania clone, great Gothic atmosphere

I don't know how people can play the GG Sonic games. You such a narrow field of view that you might as well be speeding around blindfolded, can't see shit and half your jumps are leaps of faith.
Vampire/Master of Darkness is a good game, yeah. As for GG Sonic though, what you say there is really only a huge problem in the second one. The first one has a few leaps of faith, but it's not too bad. The second one is just full of them and is somewhat broken as a result of the resolution change. Chaos and beyond are better though, I can't remember any real issues in those.

At least one of you was awesome enough to mention Slider, which is really fun for a puzzle game. :O
Unique game, that. Apparently the game has a sequel, which was only released on consoles on the Lynx as Super Skweek. Haven't played that one though.

I always loved The Lion King, but man, that was so long ago. Probably liked it just because I was a kid, lol.
Gah, The Lion King... it's somewhat interesting, for anyone who has played other versions (like the SNES/Genesis or Game Boy ones), because it's not the same as the others. Sure, the level themes are the same, but the level maps aren't. Sega made this one themselves, and the first level, for example, is entirely different in design from any other version. The graphics are fantastic too, though the audio's not as great; the GB version has better music. As for the gameplay, the biggest problem I have with GG Lion King is that it's somewhat absurdly hard. The game's tough, has no saving, and starts you with zero continues; you have to earn them by getting to the bonus stages and getting them there. That won't be easy... so yeah, the game's too hard for a kids' game. Of course all versions of The Lion King were hard, but this is the only one that starts you with NO continues!

Oh yeah, just replace the sword with a lightsaber and you're done. The Chuck Rock box looks terrible BTW.

Yeah. The Majesco GGs are less likely to have bad caps than the Sega ones, it's important to note. My GG is a Majesco one, and has no capacitor issues.

I found Sonic 2 to be really disappointing. The first game however is excellent.

Ristar is fairly good too, so are Castle of Illusion and Shining Force.

Somic, Shinobi, Defender of the Oasis and the best game ever:

Ax-Battler-A-Legend-of-Golden-Axe-Game-Gear_2.jpg

Next to Gargoyle's Quest (which really now, IS the best game ever) my favorite handheld game.

There are actually a lot more but those are the ones I remember most.

Glad to see it mentioned a couple times, but Tails Adventure really is the secret best Game Gear game. I know a lot of people in the press like to shit on it whenever it came around in classic game collections, but I really have to wonder if they ever even actually bothered to give it a chance.

The knee-jerk reaction certainly is, "Wow, this sure is a slow, weird Sonic game." And that is the correct assumption. But play it for more than ten minutes and it becomes obvious: this isn't actually a Sonic game. This is a Metroid game. Items are found in the environment and used to clear obstacles that require them. Sometimes you are required to backtrack to areas you've already been to in order to use an item on an old puzzle to gain access to a new location.

As you play, you find and collect Chaos Emeralds to extend your health and flight meters, you acquire parts to build vehicles... it's a great game. There's a couple of decisions that are a little odd (you can only equip four items at any given time, you save your game via password) but I'd say it still holds up quite well.

Other suggestions
Vampire: Master of Darkness - the best Castlevania game the Game Gear never had
Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar Heroes, Ristar - Outstanding versions of their Genesis counterparts.
Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble - The best two GG Sonics.
Shining Force 2 - Never played it myself, but I have heard good things about it.

Count me in as another recommendation for Magical Puzzle Popils. It is my favorite Game Gear game bar none. Incredibly fun and addictive platforming/puzzle game complete with level editor.

The damn game can tell you your IQ to within +/- 0.1! Find it and play it.

My reccomendations:

Deep Duck Trouble - very fun, animated, and the difficulty ramps up nicely at the end without feeling cheap.
Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion - Tight controls, variety in levels, and an awesome sense of foreboding. As for "Land of Illusion", I only played a little, but it I found it lacking compare to Castle.
Sonic Chaos - First Sonic game where you could fly as Tails! Has most of the late-genesis niceities of a Sonic game. Sonic 2 has serious problems due to the screen cropping. (When I was 8, and Sonic 2 was my only game, it took me literally 2 months to defeat the first boss.) (Not to say that Sonic 2 is bad; I just popped in "Sonic Blast"... and it's terrible)
Mean Bean Machine - Sweet Sweet Pyuo Puyo.

And... looking at my (kinda large) GG collection, I can't really strongly reccomend much else. Either they were mediocre games (Ceasar's Palace!) or I've acquired them too recently, and haven't really played them (Ecco 1/2)

It's a pity that Sega's Sylvan Tale never came out in the US. Glad a fantranslation exists, but that isn't exacty gonna help the OP. It was a pretty good action RPG a la zelda.

I love dragon crystal, but I'm not entirely sure why. Got it the day it came out on Game Gear, and it's still my most played Game Gear game.

EDIT: I was a Lynx owner/fanatic. So, you know, bias.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers

Seriously. A great game that's a mix of the beat'em up and fighting genres. The music is good too.

The Majors Pro League Baseball

A really well done baseball game.

Makes me wanna get my Game Gear and play a little. I actually have Shaq Fu for it... what a stupid purchase

Really? I think it's a pretty bad rogue like.

Shining Force games are good, Wonderboy, Sonic platformers (I don't recall what are the differences between Sonic 2 SMS and GG, but I own the SMS version and I like it quite a bit), Tails Adventure and a couple of other RPGs that were already mentioned here are good choices.

That game has a special place in hell. I got that game, and never beat it once. The game would cheat so badly if you were doing well and you'd end up dying unfairly with no saves or nothing. It was tough as shit.

I also remember World Series Baseball being pretty good on the gamegear too.

This! I played this game more than any other GG title when I got it on release. Randomized dungeons, loot, and a difficulty that seems impossible.

I watched a guys video recently where he actually beats the game and discusses how long it took him and that unless you get some specifics in terms of enemies/items etc. that the game is unbeatable. I cant remember how many times it took him to get the game to roll the beatable scenario, but it was a lot.

So while flawed from a design perspective, I have some pretty fond memories of it.

Power Rangers: The Movie is the best fighter on the handheld by far. This isn't actually saying much but I actually devoted a few months to it.

Just recently got done with Ax Battler and Sylvan Tale...

Ax Battler - it's a strange mashup of Dragon Quest and Zelda 2. The game has some decent combat (you get a ton of different moves and have to use them to best take out the enemies), and you need to be very careful and make slow and steady progress to make your way through the levels. Aesthetics are very nice too. But, the hit detection is a bit spotty and there are some extremely frustrating sections later in the game (like, 2 challenging dungeons back to back, not to mention a world map filled with tons of random encounters). It's worth giving a shot to.

Sylvan Tale - one of the best games on the platform, IMO. I played the fan translation and read through GAFfer Philia's FAQ for help. It's a top-down action RPG where you transform into different animals to solve tasks. There are a few great boss fights and some cool dungeon/puzzle design... but the overall scope of the game is rather small. Definitely worth playing though!

Other games I've played on the system:

Dragon Crystal - this is my first experience with the "roguelike" genre, needless to say I've never become a fan. If you've ever played a roguelike before, you know the deal... random levels, loot, etc. I don't know how it compares to the rest of the genre since I'm not really into it but it might be worth playing...

Defenders of Oasis - one of my top games for the system, a middle-eastern Arabian Nights style RPG. DQ-style first person, turnbased battles, and traditional top-down overworld movement. The graphics are pretty vibrant, music is EXCELLENT (especially the boss song). You get like a genie in your party and shit... yeah it's pretty awesome, highly recommended if you're into classic RPGs.

Phantasy Star Gaiden - this game really sucks. It's another one of the traditional RPGs for the system (JP-only but there's a fan translation out). The random encounter rate is astronomical, randomized damage is loopy (you either do tons of damage or barely any damage), nearly every dungeon looks identical... there are a few nods to PS1 but even if you're a huge fan of the PS series (like me) it's not even worth it.

Phantasy Star Adventure - a really short Japanese-style adventure (think: Princess Tomato, Portopia Murder Mystery Case). I mean, like "you can beat this on your lunch break short"... it's got a few cool puzzles, nice graphics, and a story with extremely slight ties to Phantasy Star 2. There's a fan translation out for this, but you can't use passwords with the fan translation (just use save states)... there's worse ways to spend 45 minutes of your time.

Sonic 2 - was pretty good once you get past that near-impossible first stage boss! (there's a stage select you can use) Good music too... this is the game that came with my brother's Game Gear.

Other games, that I'd like to play:

Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy - I heard these are pretty impressive ports for the system.
Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya - a portable Shining Force game!
Crystal Warriors - another SRPG that looks like Shining Force.
Panzer Dragoon Mini - a "PD for kids" game, heard it was real bad but I want to try.
Woody Pop - best name ever for a game! It's a breakout clone...
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap - the SMS game is godly, though I'm not sure how the GG port compares.

In conclusion: Sylvan Tale and Defenders of Oasis are must plays... the others are hit or miss.

SHINOBOX.jpg

The best Shinobi games are on Game Gear.
Always wondered why did we get other playable ninjas in these games only.
The Red Shinobi is playable in most (all ?) Shinobi games, but not the other ones. Walking on the ceiling was so cool :P

People trolling a Game Gear thread now?

How low can one go? seriously. This is getting beyond pathetic here.

Ax Battler
Shinobi I
Shinobi II
Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion
Streets of Rage
Road Rash
Wonder Boy
NBA Jam
Paperboy (one of the best games ever)
Micro Machines
Micro Machines 2
All Sonic games except Sonic Chaos
Alien 3
Batman Returns
Dynamite Headdy

Awesome, I'm glad my silly hyped FAQ helped a lot. I should mention this, I've wrote that over a DECADE AGO. XD When I was very silly young and uh... hyped. XD

Good on you catching up on a LOT of fantastic classics! :D

The GG Shinobi games and Defender of Oasis were probably my favorites, along with the first Sonic game (Sonic 2 GG sucked). There was a vampire game that I used to play that was a takeoff of Castlevania but I don't remember the name or even if it was good. I've always been bonkers for Castlevania so I may have just played it for that.

the only 3 game gear games i own (and liked) are sonic chaos, aladdin, and x-men. well, x-men got annoying because you couldnt save, while there was a password system in aladdin. sonic is just...sonic (good though).

speaking of game gear, i had a black one, but i always remembered seeing a blue one. probably just my mind screwing my memories up!
