The difference is: one is saying words for no reason and thinking they are inherently funny. And the other is having a joke. Set up and Pay off. That is how jokes work.

Jon just strikes me as being the way he is because not enough people in his life have decided to tackle him on certain stuff, and its come as a detriment to his character. Like when he pretty much tells Arin not to crit DKC because its one of his faves and sort of projects this porcelain baby bird persona that could shatter if ever faced with too much criticism. Its never healthy to a person, but because people never want to be "that asshole", nobody ever really steps up to the plate. Turns out you didnt like DKC as much as you thought Jon, welcome to realising nostalgia is a cloudy agent indeed.

Add to that a fanbase coalescing into almost a secondary shell around this beloved baby bird to protect it from everything else (Knux-Future in this very topic for instance with repeated Y'ALL ARE THE REAL GRUMPS HURRRRR rhetoric) and you get an insular as hell web-series that will only get worse, not better.

I loved the start of Game Grumps, but maybe because of them trying to force too much out and because Jon's terrible game choices have taken precedent (theres no way we'll tire of ALL THE DKC GAMES BACK TO BACK!!!!) the show has lost a whole fuckload of lustre.

FWIW, even though I agree with most criticisms thrown Jon's way, I still really like watching the series just due to the dynamic he and Arin have with each other. Specifically, the way Arin just goes with the flow with all of the silly shit Jon does and says is inherently amusing to me just because I've been in that situation a lot myself.

Yeah, it definitely does approach a sort of "Shit my baby brother says" format at times. Like when Arin just lets Jon dig holes deeper such as "you suck, give it here it'll be easy OH FUCK" and that recent "isn't it dumb when women are the fighters" rant. Jon just needs like a 5-year time-skip or something where he starts researching stuff a little more thoroughly (Ego too though, BIGTIME) and becomes less afraid of having his viewpoints challenged (this is where Ego is in the right place). But then thats also why a lot of the internet loves him, because they too are these fragile little flowers that can't handle things they like being discussed critically.

The irony being of course that the shows format is frequently "how can we shit on this game".

It's not just about criticizing it tho. It's just that this entire thread is nothing but criticism. i get it that you can criticize the product sure go for it but when that's all you do (not you persay), then why are you still here. It would be like me going into a COD trhead and constantly harping on things I don't like about it. Or going into a TV/Anime thread and constantly picking it apart and calling it's creator nasty names and saying he has confidence issues. It just boggles my mind that someone can constantly nag on something they supposedly like. I get that you want it to be better but constantly tho? at that point why do you still watch if every damn episode bothers you in someway or another? It can't be nejoyable to watch if you can pick out a flaw every damn time.

I know I know, bu-but by not criticizing it, you are just a fanboy/sheep/dickrider herpderpherp. and to a point I agree (see the Youtube comments) but there has to be a middle ground man. If a passerby would come into this thread and read through it, they would question if people even enjoy it anymore.

Perhaps I just struggle with the constant negative outlook everyone seems to have nowadays. I just don't get it. Every board I frequent is full of this "this is ass" or "this is the worse thing ever" feel I get from it. It just really takes the enjoyment out of everything. I began posting on boards to talk about things I love or enjoy. I left Gamefaqs because ti was nothing but Nintendrones, SonyBots bullshit and no one seemed to enjoy anything anymore. It might just be me but ti's draining as fuck to never just enjoy something without pickign at it's flaws.

Yeah Game Grumps can get a hell of a lot better. Yeah the faggy comment was a little fucked up as was the 9/11 joke (I laughed at that one tho...so random). Yeah the DKC2 episode dragged and yes Jon can be a bit grating. Most of the complaints are all legit ( some less than others) . I'll relent to that point.

It's just that can we actually talk about what was good in an episode anymore? or post the animations or remixes for once? The constant negativity is just depressing man. Liek we barely even talk about the episodes anymore.

I don't mean to push my views onto people and if I did I'm sorry. I still struggle at this but everytime I come in here there is nothign but raaaaaage. That's a bit sad. Y'know?

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of Game Grumps and things they can alter to improve the show, but the humor isn't one of them. What people find funny or unfunny is something inherently subjective. If you're easily offended and don't care for off-color humor, you probably shouldn't be watching.

I feel like most of the criticisms regarding the humour are regarding its quality, or rather how people have perceived a steady dip in it over the weeks. Finding comedy at fault for laziness or overuse/repetition is a legitimate complaint that has an objective ground to it. I think a lot of people here have been watching the show since it started, which really wasn't that long ago, and doing so on a daily basis too.
This is where I think Jon and Arin have inevitably sabotaged themselves: They've committed to a releasing two 10-minute shows a day without breaks. On the one side they have to put together enough content to fulfil that quota, and on the other that very quota is saturating their audience with one-note content. Something's gotta give; the problem for them is that it's not an either-or situation.

All and all, I guess that Game Grumps as a device is sort of coming to a head. I really wasn't expecting Game Grumps to be on the /v/ awards "worst youtube personalities" list, but...here we are.

Also: only certain shows of 2 best friends are edited, much like certain shows of Grumps are edited. The 2 best friends lets plays (eternal darkness, chrono trigger, Silent hill Downpour, etc) are unedited. Only the stuff that goes up on Machinima is edited.

Oh well. Personally the only grumps stuff I'm watching at this point is the Sonic Run. Everything else I watch for about a minute before I have to turn it off.

Dehumanizing is okay by me. As somebody who got insulted most of my life, I really dont care about jokes about my appearance, hobbies or stuff in general. Learning to laugh about yourself is more important than anything else when you are watching humor or doing it.

They make racist, rapist or sexist or homophobic joke. They are still funny to me even if they touch me. They also make jokes about themselfs.

I'm a guy who like to laugh. Humor is something used to get stuff out and laugh about it. That does not make them racist, sexist, rapist or homophobic. The day where Arin or Jon wont want to touch somebody for those reason, then we can have a discussion. But until then, they are just guys making jokes.
