That's the entire video game industry. Though, I have to wonder with the amount of 8's and 9's given. When don't they become the average?

Don't most sites use 5 on the 10 point scale as "average?" If they don't, they should. Having more ways of saying something is bad than if something is good leads to this issue of GI where everything gets from 7-9. It creates clutter and makes it more difficult to differentiate good games from exceptional ones. Also, if something's bad, does it really matter if it's poor or abysmal? The message is the same in both cases: don't play this game. We do not need a six point range of shit, Game Informer. Those are parts of your scale that could be put to better use elsewhere.

Or you could make the observation that GI is just being more honest than other review outlets with where their average actually falls, but either situation is bad.

They don't. Most review outlets use the American Education system's grade scale where 70% is average.

I think that's the first positive review for Knights Contract that I've seen.

A 7 in game informer is far, far from positive.

Now that I think about it, the reason I think 5, 6, and 7s are delegated as "bad" review scores has to do with the cost of a new game. I'll go see a movie in theaters even though I know it sucks because it's only ten dollars. The problem is that most publishers want 60 bucks a pop whether or not their game sucks. I'd buy a shitty game if it were only ten or twenty bucks.

Doesn't Game Informer usually have regular (ie: console, according to GI) game of the month and then either handheld GoTM or PC GoTM? It's pretty interesting that they stratify things like that by having those distinctions.

I'd be interested to read this review, especially with many impressions saying that the game is better WITHOUT the 3D (faster framerate.)

I saw the game in person and the 3D is what makes it special and gives it charm.
But if you care so much about framerate then I guess you can just treat it as that.
I personally think graphics are more than just the tech side of stuffs.

What's funny is all these so called 'reviewers' always insist that they think 5 is the average. If you get 50 points in a 100 school exam, are you suppose to feel ok about being 'average'?

Is that the new Yar's Revenge? I didn't realize it was coming out so soon since I've yet to see even a screen shot of actual gameplay for it.

EDIT: Found a gameplay trailer for it on IGN which was put up the 25th of last month. I swear they don't want anyone to know about it.

Since this seems to be subconsciously what they're doing anyway, they might as well go to the A-F system.

Sad to hear that Dragon Age PC version actually got a lower score. It was easily the best version for the first time around.

I hate how the magazines don't take advantage of the full scale. But what do you expect, I'm pretty sure it's like that in most entertainment. The ones that grade out of 10 that is.

I also believe GI has had the pc game of the month for a while.

What's funny about that is, people still freak out, even on GAF, if something 'big' gets like an 8, as if it's an affront, and then you get pages of 'bias' and 'played it wrong' talk. Pretty pathetic. My favorite game last year was Nier, it has a metacritic of 68. My favorite album last year was Have One On Me, it has an 85. Black Swan, favorite film last year, 79. In fact a lot of my favorite games this generation have pretty below par scores, Mirror's Edge is 79, I could only imagine the shit storm that would happen if ME2 came out and got a 7/10.
