Game Informer Game of the Year 2007: Bioshock

quoting this before the system shock 2 namedropping kills me

I can't believe only one person mentioned System Shock. That game was truly underrated, if not the most underrated and unappreciated game (or hell, most unappreciated creation of mankind) of all time. not this System Shock 2 bullcrap. Everyone says System Shock 2 was underrated and overlooked, but when you ask them about the original they were "Uuuuh what?" Yeah you poseurs, fuck you.

The first post mentioned that the old FPSers lacked precise aiming, logical puzzle-solving or level design. System Shock had those AND MORE! A deep story not involving a teleport as the reason why there are bad guys ruining your shit up, shifts of gameplay (like going into cyberspace, minigames you can collect and play on your little cyber PDA), and an advanced interactive environment and hud that allowed any sort of texture or object in the game to give you a name and indicate if you could use it or not. The developers worked really hard to create an immersing experience by making a logical world.

More shit System Shock had that was rare or didn't even exist back then:
-Clips and ammo! And not only could you reload, but you could also use ALTERNATIVE TYPES OF AMMO! You thought that shit was cool in Bioshock? That existed 13 years ago baby! You see that laser in the screenshot? That little bar on the bottom was an adjustable trigger that allowed you to set how powerful you want it to be, but the more powerful the laser was the more heat it would produce and the more power it would drain from you. See that "Overload" button? That's not a goddamn status sign, that's another switch on the laser you could press that would make your weapon instantly overheat and fire a supercharged pulse of death. How cool is that?!
-Voice Acting! And not just some random quotes spewed from time to time, but actual long strings of narrative brought to you by e-mails, logs, and cutscenes. There was an abundance of data logs that you could listen to, detailing the tragedy brought forth by Shodan. They also had hints buried in the dialog that could help you out on your missions, and some by Shodan herself that showed you the spiraling path of insanity that she went down (if you thought that "Look at you Hacker" was a creepy and memorable line, you should hear the data log labeled "humanity" where she daydreams about becoming a god (and just may be the point where it she realized it and made it her objective.)
-Crouching, Proning, and EVEN FUCKING LEANING! That's right, and not only you could only peak around corners to look for enemies or engage in a cover-based combat, but you could swing your whole body over! Fuck that sissy head leaning in other FPSers that made you constantly readjust your position, or that shitty context button stuff. In System Shock, you could lean far down enough where you swear you're lying on your side and it was AWESOME because you never had to worry too much if your too far away from a wall to lean.
-A HUD that wasn't just a health and ammo counter. The hud is a result from cybernetic implants, and in the future they're not going to just count how much bullets you have. The hud was like having another OS on your system, buttons and panels and features all for your clicking. Don't like the cludder? You could activate your full screen mode and minimize your item windows (this game also had a FUCKING MANAGEABLE INVENTORY! AAAAAH!). You could customize your hud by what sort of statistics you wanted. Your weapons, your targets, your health (and fatigue!), your minimap, your little data log. This HUD was fucking sophisticated!

Want to know the coolest part? This game was released in early 1994, just four months after the original Doom, nine months before Marathon, two YEARS before Duke Nukem 3D, and probably came out before all these other games mentioned. This game would of been held in high regards as monolithic and an evolution in game design if anyone had actually paid attention to it.

I'm still trying to figure out what Bioshock did that's worth of all this praise. I can think of at least two games within The Orange Box that are better.

But then again, it's Game Informer, so...

The story. Not simply the game's story but the world's story. I can't think of one game this year that I felt involved in as much as I felt involved in BioShock. Sure the game isn't flawless (especially the last third) but overall it's the game that stands out the most for me this year and my GOTY.

The flawless gameplay didn't hurt either.

Well there comes a time when a game's imitation is so great that it affects your judgment processes. If Mario Galaxy was Mario 64 part-deux, there's no way in the world you would see the same reception towards it.

And bioshock also suffers from the console market, i mean where's the damn inventory?i pickup things but i cant see what i have? Or interact with?....lame. If this game was called System Shock 3 it would be the biggest letdown of the year.

Yes ive played System shock 1 too(almost finished it, but i was a kid and my English was not the best), but try to throw that to the Bioshock worshippers, they'll laugh at you.....

I think the main problem with System Shock itself is age. I enjoyed Doom in 95-96, if I had to play it again today I'd probably kill myself. Heck I didn't get into the whole SS/SS2 phase till '04, skipped SS due to the horrible mess of pixels and even going through SS2 at the time was a bit rough but I stomached it to see it was quite a decent game underneath the horrible Hybrid models :lol

I've got to start playing BioShock again - never got past the intro section.

If play-time is my indicator for GOTY, then Rock Band would win easily...

Nice, another "Bioshock sucks, you posers" thread. :lol

anyway, I do want to try out System Shock 2-- does it run in XP? I thought I read there were some problems.

There was an attempt to remake the original SS with the DOOM3 engine but EA threatned the team which was going for it.....

It runs with some alterations and there's already many visual enhancments patches that up the textures resolutions and models.....

It's not that Bioshock sucks, far from that. It's just kinda funny seeing everyone praising it as the best thing in the FPS genre since, well, Half-Life, yet it's all been kinda done before with SS2. It's like seeing all these people arrive at a party several years late and you want to reinforce the idea to them that they should be playing the bigger brother. Not in the sense that SS2 completely destroys all fabrications of what Bioshock is all about - moreso in the sense that it's a worthwhile trip to see the growth perhaps of the developers themselves.

And yes SS2 works in XP via patching. Just hit up the wiki page for some links.

Bioshock has a lot of elements from System Shock 2, and System Shock 2 has a lot of elements that were in System Shock 1, because they're all the same franchise.

Although I really do wish there were other people who played System Shock 1 so I could sit on a rocking chair and reminisce about how awesome it was. (even though i played it this year)

VVV Well I don't know. In this Situation I prefer Galaxy because there are just too many FPSers out there. But if I never played a 3D Platformer or a FPSer before my preference could be Bioshock.

It doesn't suck. Galaxy is just much, much better.
And it's not another shootergame which makes it even better.

Trying to convince anyone that Bioshock sucks because it borrows heavily from a 13 year old 2D PC game they've never played, and if they did play in 2007 would seem archaic and worthless, is totally fucking stupid. It's the equivalent of lamenting the lack of sales for Metal Gear: Solid Snake after MGS blew up on Playstation.

Wolfenstein was great...for its time.
Doom was great...for its time.
Quake was great...for its time.
I'm sure System Shock was great...for its time.

Let it go.

I didn't say that Bioshock sucked! :[

It's still really great even compared with the other shocks, but I value Galaxy more because it was situationally special.

Not a single soul in this thread has stated that Bioshock sucks anyway.

If anything there has been love for it, as well as a chance to rediscover what the developers did previously since many have not played them.

It'd be like someone who's never touched Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World going through Galaxy and never knowing some of the stuff that is thrown in that game that harkens back to those classics.

I saw this page and thought it was a little suspect. It is obvious every person didn't play all the games, yet Mass Effect was on everyone's list. So it was more like a "Top 10 list per person of the games they played".

Isn't GIs GOTY based on review score anyway? I remember last years award went to Zelda TP (10/10) and only one person had it in his #1 while most everyone else had Oblivion or WoW.

Of all the top games this year, I'd say Bioshock is at the bottom of the pile when it comes to gameplay (with Mass Effect and Assassins Creed being lower). Bioshock is alot of things but a vote for Bioshock isn't a vote for gameplay.

Looks like the votes broke down as follows for number 1:
Bioshock: 5
COD4: 3
SMG: 1
Rock Band:1

Worst Game of the Year: Fusion Frenzy 2

I own all those games . . . including Fuzion Frenzy 2. :lol

Seriously . . . WTF? If you don't like it, fine . . . but how can you say it is a bad game after getting four different GOTY awards now?!?! AP, GI, BAFTA, Spike TV's VGA . . . plus more to come?

Nothing wrong with subjectively not liking it but after so much praise, it is clear that it is objectively a great game.

Not true, I believe I was fairly clear in stating that Bioshock sucks irregardless of whatever game came before it in it's franchise.

Actually I find that it's just the opposite. Objectively, Bioshock tries to be a great game and fails. Whether or not what it manages to do and the fact that it even tries redeems the game is subjective though, and I'm happy that many people think they do.

Bioshock was a good game maybe even a very good game. I personally don't think it was a great game. It was dragged out too much. So much that I never actually finished it because I didn't care anymore.

I always get a real "I liked it before it was popular" vibe from the people who cite System Shock 2, but whatever...

Thanks for the advice about SS2, one of these days, I hope to check it out.

i was a little surprised that the 1up yours guys--who were so ridiculously hyped for the game--largely didn't bother to finish it. maybe pressures of deadlines and all that, but i still found it pretty surprising

it drags towards the end. They could've shaved off a few hours.

I thought i was the only one. Guess not....

Halo 3 Fans to GI editors: "Would you kindly make Halo 3 your Game of the Year."

Couldn't agree more. The combat was really only fun when you were fighting against the big daddies.

The lovely atmosphere, storytelling and artstyle does deserve a lot of props but overall it doens't make my top 5 games this year. Maybe not even top 5 FPS.

I'm right in the middle of the game so can't comment on its eligibility for GOTY, but so far I'm absolutely loving it.

Nope, same here. I got to the point where you
kill Ryan
and the game crashed. I never went back to it again. I will try to finish with the new FOV patch after the holidays, but the game dragged and got stale half way through.

Someone else made a good point, all the splicers fear the Big Daddies, but I am a walking God and no one runs from me in Rapture. Strange.

Don't get my wrong, Bioshock is a great game and if/when picked for Game of the Year there couldn't be much argument against. However GI's reputation as of late is... meh

Go Bioshock, well deserved! Not my personal GOTY (#2 for me; Mass Effect swooped in and stole #1 at the last moment), but still incredibly worthy.

Nothing lends credibility to a title like winning the Spike TV VGAs. :-P

I haven't played Bioshock yet, so I really can't comment, but all these BIOSHOCK SUX people really do reek of trying to be unique and trendy. I can't remember the last time a game was as universally hailed as Bioshock, so I know it's not as bad as you're making it out to be.
