Game Informer's Best Of E3 2013 Awards

Because every time a game like this is a hit, it makes developers try to copy it in an attempt to replicate its success. Which means less and less single-player games.

Call me selfish if you want, I probably am at this point. But if the "it" game of next gen ends up being a multiplayer-ONLY FPS, then single player as we know it is going to be gone for good. And personally, I'd rather not see my entire hobby sacrificed at the altar of Little Jimmy McRacistMouth.

You are selfish. Games are not just for YOU.

I believe there is a place in this industry for each genre. What type of single player games are you talking about though? I mean, you have The Witcher, Skyrim..things like that and you have indie titles like Bastion and others that are still being made.

I think you are overreacting a bit, but I understand your concern. Look at what Sony is focusing on with their love towards the little guys; Transistor and all of the other titles they have shown at E3. Look at Journey; there is more options than ever out there IMO; I don't see single player titles going away, but that is just me.

Surprised not to see Destiny, The Division, and Forza.

I'll be buying Titanfall and Forza when they release but Destiny is my game of show. The hype is all for Titanfall at the moment and it will definitely be a great game but Destiny will surely surprise people when Bungie reveal the depths they went to to flush out their story/dialogues and show off their competitive multiplayer.

Peter Dinklage as your guide throughout the game excites me even more about the game.

Of course they're not just for me - do you think I'm a crazy person? But they are also not just for intellectually-stunted 14-year-olds who can't function in life unless they're screaming racial slurs into a microphone and teabagging someone's corpse while guzzling Dew and Doritos.

There should be games for everyone. Homogenization is the death of the industry.

I hope you're right, but personally, I'm not interested in indie games. Not as the main focus of my consoles. It's one of the reasons my Vita has been kind of abandoned lately - indie games are nice as an appetizer, but I need some substantial "main course" type games to really keep me interested. And lately, there are less and less MAJOR single-player games coming out as everybody chases the MMO/CoD revenue streams.

You just described M$' key demographic :)

Some of these indie games might have more depth than you give them credit for.

Those indie titles that you mark as an appetizer are deep titles; you are missing out if you label it that way before playing the game. I guess my question is, what kind of SP game are you looking for? I gave examples such as The Witcher, Skyrim, Fallout, etc.

People sometimes don't even know what they want. But they'll know when they see it!

I respect the list, but Titanfall was one of the least exciting things for me at E3. I was sold until I heard it was multiplayer only. It's like Warhawk all over again for me.

Wow, so they just picked the best trailers of E3? Most of those games were not playable, so how did they judge them?

I feel that. But even I'm excited to try something like this so to me that's pretty impressive.

There is a difference between "trailer" (pre-recorded and/or rendered video) and developer driven live gameplay. Also, my understanding is that even some of the dev-driven demos (again, LIVE gameplay) were playable to a very select few.

Titanfall... srsly. I just saw a CoD with Mechs and even FASTER gameplay. I dont think such a thing should win.

Yeah, I was interested in Titanfall until I saw:

-actual shooting gameplay and it was instantly reminded of COD. reload anis and all.
-+500... +1000 point tallies scrolling up the screen
and then
-Win 8

the mech combat and jumping looks like some nice tweaks but I've revisited the vids and now all i see is COD.

Maybe they are. I don't hate indies as a concept. But as I said, they're not - and should not be - the driving force behind me slapping down $400 on a new console.

RPGs are my favorite genre without question, but I've never been a big fan of PC RPGs. Too much emphasis on random wandering and not enough on storytelling or characters. The Witcher games are alright, but generally I prefer the Japanese style over the Western one. And that applies for most genres, really.

There will always be those style of games; what you are asking for though is never going to happen as long as the games that sell keep selling.

Oh, come on! Best shooter AND multiplayer goes to Titanfall? Am I missing something? Sure, it look quite interesting, but not the best.

There are less and less quality, lengthy single-player games every year. At some point, the style is going to die out simply due to lack of support. That's why I'm so militantly anti-multiplayer these days. Look at this E3 for example - there were basically no major single player games announced this year. Everything is multiplayer-focused nowadays, even if they shove in a token single player 'campaign' just to check a bullet point on the box.

What about MGSV? Japanese AND predominantly single player.

That is what the consumers want, for the most part..not you included obviously. People love to be online and gaming online is a natural next step in that evolution. I just don't think SP games are going to go away anytime soon. Like I mentioned before; categorizing indie type games as an apptetizer is definitley selling them short. There are some quality indie games that I have enjoyed much more than bigger budget releases. As for your particular genre, Japanese style titles, it seems that there are less and less of them each year.

MGSV wasn't announced at this E3, but that's a semantics argument. Suffice to say I have my own issues with MGSV that would pretty much take us so deeply into a thread derail we'd probably never climb out again. I'll just leave it at a "not interested" for now.

The problem with indies is that so few of them have real content to them, and so many of them are just one clever idea stretched out for four or five hours and that's it. For every Super Meat Boy or Journey, there are like 30 games trying to be Limbo. And I didn't even like Limbo.

If someone made an indie RPG with the scale and production values of Final Fantasy VI, I'd be interested in that. But 2D puzzle platformers or 8-bit nostalgia grabs? I just don't really feel it.

Really? Fair enough. :)

Someone should do that.

It honestly amazes me that Zeboyd is pretty much the only studio making indie RPGs at the moment. There's clearly a market for them - if a studio with slightly higher ambitions or a slightly higher budget took on the genre, we could potentially see a real masterpiece.

Really? Fair enough. :)

Yeah, it's a personal taste thing, influenced by a fair deal of emotionality. I'm fine with talking about it elsewhere, but this totally isn't the thread for it. :)

The Division just looks like Planetside 2 in New York, but at least it doesn't look terrible and has pwetty gwafics. The Elder Scrolls Online looks terrible. I would have given best MMO title to the Division... Actually, I would have just nixed best MMO, because I think MMOs are boring anyway.

Otherwise, I really have no problem with this list. Yeah, it's obviously biased towards Titanfall, but it's hardly different from the insane praise I've seen in other places for The Division or Final Fantasy XV.

It's weird to see Titanfall shat on as "more of the same" where The Division and Destiny, at this point, are little more than Borderlands-style shooters set in different worlds. Nothing about their gameplay was particularly innovative or new; they looked really pretty, yeah, but the verdict is out on the gameplay. At least Titanfall put its new game mechanic front and center.

List isn't great, though--did Elder Scrolls have a great showing, or was it like 1 out of 2 MMOs shown?

I may not agree with their choices, but Titanfall for best multiplat?

at least someone acknowledges that PCs exist

Cookin'. I'd be interested to hear/read/whatever about it if you ever get that bored. I found your "syphilis" comment in the other thread amusing - it's my favourite of the venereal diseases and deserves more mentions :)

It's called wishful thinking. :P

Ha! Personally, I do enjoy a good multiplayer game. Thank heavens for the mute button, eh?

I thought the same thing w/ Destiny. I want to know what separates it from Borderlands, for instance.

They should have just given all the award to games we saw nothing of but were shown behind closed doors - like Fallout 4.

Just be like, "This game is totally fucking badass and it'll blow your mind -Game of the Show, 2013 is TBA"

I mean it's basically the same thing.

Huh, I guess I just haven't seen Titanfall. Looked like mech of duty to me.

Witcher 3 looked pretty badass from the impressions I heard, but I guess it wasn't playable.

Why do you think Multiplayer is so bad?

That'd be a very, very long explanation. Suffice to say, I don't like playing games where I have to rely on random idiots just to succeed. And I get absolutely no satisfaction out of killing people over and over again in what basically just feels like botmatches full of preteen racists.
