Game Lengths - What clocks in at what?

I really only have one simple question; where can I find a comprehensive database or list of average game lengths?

I have dozens upon dozens of games I've never had the time to get into, and I'd really like to know what some of these things on my shelf would clock in at.

Of course not all games can really be measured like most fighting games, puzzle games, sports, MMORPGs etc....

But I've got tons of Survival Horror games, Action Adventure games, and RPGs etc. that I'd need to know what I'd be getting into just to find time to finish.

Also, seeing as how this thread might die as soon as someone responds "Hey just check the review on _______.com for how long the game is"... I think it might be worth sharing your own average completion times for games after finishing the basic single player objectives without addtional extras.

So... any help here?

You need to tell us what games in particular you're wanting to know about. I doubt a site exists that is a database of how long it took people to beat a game. I don't think it'd be much use anyway, since length is always different for everyone.

Great idea. If I'm ever skimming through reviews I always look for individual scores/comments and hourly estimates to game length.

See that's the problem...

I literally have over 100 unplayed on the shelf right now from this current XBX/GC/PS2 gen.

That's why i think it could get out of hand to just say...

ok...

Killer 7. How long should it take me?
GhostHunter. How long?
Mercenaries. How long?
Shenmue II. How long?
Bujingai... Shadow Hearts 1 and 2, Metal Arms...

See what i mean? The list just goes on and on.... and I know there are other folk who'd like to know some game lengths but to go one by one would be insane... right?

There are some games out there that just aren't worth the hassle

Like Shenmue 2. Avoid that. The rest are fine.

Shenmue 2 is about 10 hours if I remember right. Its usually not the most exciting game tho. Playing it on DC back in the day was awsome tho.

I am getting tired of these superlong games. I am watching my friend play FFVII again (it's my favorite game and I derive pleasure simply out of WATCHING it play out) and I realize to myself that this game is LONG. I have simply FORGOTTEN whole chunks of the gameplay. The whole "keystone" quest totally slipped from my memory.

Anyway, I love a good long game (FFVII) every once in a while-- or even a superlong game (DQ8), but I have such a backlog right now....I'm never gonna finish anything.

I really love it when I can get sucked into a long game for a week or two...it happens about once a year. You know, the days where you'd race home to start it up again and play for as long as you could before the next class starts or you had to head out to work or whatever. It's always more fun with a friend too...

I still can't believe I played Tales of Symphonia for 25 hours and just stopped. I've never done that before, ptu that much of an investment into a game and then just stop. Not even that I didn't like it, I just put it down, and when I came back I forgot what I was supposed to do next. That's the end of it.

You probably won't believe this, but I spent several months after work and at weekends translating the goddamn diary in the game that TELLS you what you have to do next at any given time ;) Please, for the love of my sanity, use it :D

Theres a thread over at CAG that has some game completion times. Mostly popular ones and the original post hasn't been updated for awhile. Thats the biggest list I've seen though :/
I'm surprised no one has actually made a site/database for this purpose. I suppose it would be hard to verify.

I have that problem mostly if I'm playing a game but not really enjoying it. Sometimes I'll be near the end and realise it just isn't interesting enough and move on.

There is something that tells you what to do next? I didn't know that, other than that one map/quest thing, which didn't give me any indication of where to go next.

Lake Earth - Well, i don't think it tells you what exactly you have to do (since that would spoil the game) but it recaps what you have done recently, which should allow you to figure out your next step. I only actually played the game for a few hours myself (couldn't stand the combat system and i knew the whole story in advance so there was very little incentive to keep going after i'd gotten a feel for the characters etc).
