'Game Of Thrones' Prequel Begins Filming In Belfast

Was that because they've been doing it for so many years?

Or

Is it because the production unnecessarily ramped up the speed and scale of the show way too fast the last two seasons? They could have scaled back the spectacle and improved the writing, and it would have had a lot less harsh a toll on the actors.
True, it is the symptom of "gotta go bigger". But that's what the show has been all about. Grand production.
I don't think you can scale the production down much. Not with the story like this.
And to improve writing and production conditions would again take a lot of time. We already had a whole year pause for the last season.
I don't think it's realistic to expect 2 year delay between seasons.
That's just too much time.

I also think that as some time passes the final season will be held I better regard. Now internet is full of hot takes and disappointment. I personally didn't find it such bad.
The production value was unprecedented. I can really appreciate that despite the flaws in writing. Some of it was straight up Dark Souls the movie.
Amazing.

They're not "hot takes" when it's about half of the fanbase that agrees how bad it was. It's gonna go down as one of the most disappointing final series in TV history, in fact it already has, though absolutely not the worst. It's not because of anything other than the script, though. We all agree that the rest of the cast and crew did their best and that the show looks great for the most part.

Anyway, here's the history of the only writer listed for this project so far, Jane Goldman. Bit of a mixed bag.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (written by)
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (screenplay by)
The Limehouse Golem (screenplay)
Kingsman: The Secret Service (screenplay by)
X-Men: Days of Future Past (story by)
The Woman in Black (screenplay)
X-Men: First Class (screenplay by)
The Debt (screenplay)
Kick-Ass (screenplay)
Stardust (screenplay)

No, the show used to be about characters, plot, intrigue, and trope subversion. Seasons 1-4 had lots of this, without as much "grand production", and they are considered the better seasons of the series. Having the show devolve into a big dumb action flick at the expense of the writing is not what this show used to be.

Yes you can, and yes you should. It wasn't a problem in earlier seasons.

The long wait was because they were planning for huge setpieces like the battle of Winterfell and the siege of King's Landing. It wasn't because of the writing. It doesn't seem like they spent much time on the writing, either.

I doubt it. Season 8 was garbage, in terms of the writing. Effects, production values, acting, and music were all good though.

I don't agree completely. Martin laid out the story as we have seen it. Final season was the grand showdown. I don't know why you would expect great intrigues and character building? It's an action finale. If you expected drama through and through then I don't know what to tell you... Sorry you hated it so much. But it's not garbage by any standard.

And I really really dislike the words "tropes" and "subversion" lol.

It's kind of a shitty situation for the fans.

I started GoT Like 2 or 3 weeks ago. I marathon'd the whole thing and just finished recently. I thought season 6, 7 and 8 were acceptable. And I felt the compression at the end where it started feeling less like a show and more like a blockbuster. They wanted to wrap that shit UP.

The show could really have done with another 3 seasons, at least. There's a huge fan base. It's a thriving success. Why fucking not?

Only explanation I could come up with were that D&D were getting sick of it.

or that 8 year old bran would have been in his 30s

They have already destroyed all the charisma and mysticism of the white walkers, so the entire premise of the prequel is a joke already.

And the cast already looks like a SJW fantasy, so this is already looking promising to be the new show I would love to hate.

He laid out the broad plot points. The writers did a crap job of connecting those plot points together.
I don't know why you would expect great intrigues and character building?
Because the earlier seasons and the books focus a lot on great intrigue and character building.
It's an action finale.
Because the showrunners want it to be that way.

Martin didn't write the last seasons, he just gave D&D some basics of the important plots. I can tell you right now that in the books, drama is going to be more prevalent than dumb action, dumb dialogues and characters doing random shit to "advance" the plot.

How so? Did you know any of the actors for Game of Thrones besides Sean Bean and Lena Heady, and dare I say Mark Addy? I'm leaning towards no.
It also had Aidan Gillen...

Damn, I shit on the fans in the last page but this show had the most prestigious British actors across movie, theatre and television and it was just a natural disaster. Oh well, hopefully Danny Dyer can get into this one.

The more I think about this prequel the more HBO feels slimy to me. We watched, waited, waited some more, and watched the entire series build to and eventually see the epic battle with the dead and learn more about them. Then they pulled a fast one and revealed almost nothing new at the end, all in hopes we will wait, wait and wait some more before learning everything in a new series. Hog wash.

That's what i said when game of thrones would end. you simple don't care anymore.

They should start a whole new series at this point.

Well, at least with no books they can get by with mediocore writing easier now, cause nobody has high expectations, lmao.
I don't think the source material is necessarily needed to write a good show. Breaking Bad is an incredible show with fantastic writing but doesn't refer to any sort of source material.

HBO knows there is a gigantic GoT fan base. They are aware of the reception it gets. I've read that they were in favor of keeping GoT going well past season 8 if it weren't for D&D wanting out. Instead it has concluded and now prequels are being green lit. So the way I see it, in order for HBO to secure success with the GoT audience, the writing MUST be up to the standards of the first few seasons of GoT. Boatloads of money are going into producing this new show and I don't see HBO attempting something half-ass because they know they need to produce something that will retain audiences long-term.

Hey it's that cunt from The Last Kingdom! He was fun to watch in season 3.

The budget is reportedly identical as the original show but with different writers. What are your expectations?

It's a prequel so I'm expecting them to shoehorn in as many legends/folklore that we learned about in the original series. (i.e. Azhor Ahai and Lightbringer. The doom of Valyria, The orignal long night, building of the wall etc etc...)

None of the political intrigue that made the first series interesting.

And for the characters to go from large action set-piece to large action set-piece with absolutely none of the stakes or controversial R-rated content that the original was known for.

You got to try to make it work with this cast this may as well be just as good as the original GOT if not better, the medieval, knight, dragons theme is ripe for the taking.

Youre right but to me i cant help and see a Targ when I look at him. Ancestor maybe? They didnt appear out of nowhere.
Maybe, but iirc the Targs were originally sheep herders and originated all the way over on Essos. I assume this new series is set on Westeros?

He could be related to Lann the Clever.

  • George R. R. Martin on upcoming 'Game of Thrones' prequel
Speaking to EW's James Hibberd, Martin revealed a couple of information about the "Game of Thrones" prequel show. He also suggested the title for this upcoming series.

  • It goes without saying that this show will feature everyone's favorite house, the Starks of Winterfell, but you'll be glad to know that we'll also get direwolves and mammoths. As for the White Walkers, here's what Martin had to say: "Obviously the White Walkers are here - or as they're called in my books, the Others - and that will be an aspect of it."
  • There won't be Seven Kingdoms; there will be a hundred petty kingdoms.
  • There won't be any Lannisters, at least not at first. The Casterlys will occupy the Casterly Rock.
  • It will be an ensemble show with no leads, just like "Game of Thrones."
  • The show probably won't be called "The Long Night" as Martin originally suggested, because that's the name they used for the third episode of the final season. It could be called "The Longest Night," however, a title which the author will be "okay with." He doesn't say anything about the supposedly leaked title "Bloodmoon," which leads me to believe that's just the production codename.

EXCITEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

I want to see Lann the clever finesse his way into taking Casterly Rock and planting the Lannister seed

HNNNNNNGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYHNNNNNNNNHHHHYEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

I wonder if one of the twists of this show is that it doesn't take place as long long ago as the general time line would suggest it does.

It may be good, but the whole do something and then do the thing that came before is something that has really gotten tiresome. I really have always had a hard time getting interested in prequels because very very rarely is there one that gives you something special enough to get past knowing how it ends. You may tell me that it is two series, but in the scheme of things it is really one long story and you already told me the ending. You should have really done this one first. By then GRR Brimley could have perhaps finished his books.

Fuck you George R. R. Martin, how about you finish your goddamn books instead of getting distracted consulting for the prequel show.

Well they have a white female lead and black women! How diverse, except for the fact they dont have one of the 3billion or so Asians on the planet.

Breaking Bad was a very well written show, but was also very limited and smaller both in complexity and scale.

The budget is reportedly identical as the original show but with different writers. What are your expectations?

It's nice to hear that it's being seriously backed. But as for expectations, damn. It's hard to say. I'm hopeful but less excited after how the original show ended. This show comes after the worst moment in the shows history. Is the only way up? Or will it just be lame?

I'm looking forward to finding out at least.

Heh, I thought I recognised that face.

You'd have thought that with the show being set 5K years ago, that the design might be slightly different tbh. I mean Christ we had the cave paintings in Dragonstone that were supposed to have been done around the same period. 🤔
Maybe the cave paintings are really much older than that.

Cave paintings and then a row boat with a fairly complex build doesn't seem like twp things that would occur during the same period. Then again we don't know exactly when this is taking place and if there are time jumps or anything like that.

how would you guys feel if this is successful and the inevitable 3ER flashes forward to the original timeline

what if that's the plan all along, what if this whole thing is one big ruse

i would feel cheated but still curious. I'm ready for whatever as long as it's compelling. What I think is happening is they are trying to segment different sections of the timeline that tell the big stories we want to see.

There are supposed to be 5 spin-offs and my guess is they're trying to decide what they will merge together and what they'll keep separate. Dance of Dragons, Roberts rebellion and the stuff with Lyanna, etc.

I even feel like they've (including R.R.) thought about post season 8 stuff.

BIG $$$$$ in GOT

Not sure how excited to be for this yet. I want anything from the GOT world, but like any prequel or spin off series, I'm skeptical to say the least. But I need my medieval fantasy fix.

Anyone else kind of Game of Thrones'd out? I was super excited when the original series was coming to HBO, but I'm kinda "meh" about this.

I am very new to GoT.

When it first came out I wasn't into it. Fucken a month or two after season 8 when the hype was in the air I thought I'd give it another shot. Ended up loving it and I want more lore.

Starting the e-books soon.

So we are going to see how the first men reach Westeros.

This is giving me some Across the sea (episode from Lost) vibes.

Oh boy.
I don't think there was a House Stark when the First Men first came into Westeros. I mean, there's no Direwolves in Esso, right?
