Game recommendations for a new mother

Would getting her a used 2DS/3DS be out of the question? Get a cheaper used one and a copy of literally any of the Harvest Moon (well not the latest one lost valley) or Story of Seasons games for it. That would be right up her alley perfectly fits every single criteria you layed out

Why are people saying Bloodborne? OP said nothing about a PS4, and simple games that can be played in short bursts, focussing on story and not mechanics. Bloodborne is like the worst example of that, you can't even pause the game.

Handhelds are great for new parents. Vita/3DS can just be suspended instantly if you need to stop and run. Not really feeling great about recommending investing in a new system for someone who just had a baby - money will probably be tight, but both Vita and 3DS have the exact experiences she'd enjoy.

It was a joke breh. If you played the DLC you would understand why I said it.

Maybe an otome game like Norn?

Or maybe something like Long Live the Queen, which is a surprisingly good game (but can be kinda hard).

Great recommendations, thank you. Is there any particular game on 3DS that you'd recommend as by far the best option? Might go splitsies on a 3DS/2DS for her with my other siblings if there's a compelling enough case to be made.

I think the easiest to convince your sister would be Pokemon X&Y (and the fact that it has TWO main pokemon games) , but my favorite would be either Fantasy Life, Phoenix Wright Trilogy or Mario rpgs.
Bravely Default control on random encounters might be pretty good for someone more interested in story.
Not to forget Harvest Moon and other stuff.
Also, Style Savvy might be interesting

Also, with portable gaming focus on sleep modes, ANY game can be stopped at any time she needs, just close the 3DS.

[edit : HOW could I forget Phoenix Wright ??? ]

The World Ends With You on her phone (or 3ds if you do go for one)

3ds would be a worthy investment, for less than $100 you'd get arguably the best RPG library in history and some good 3ds rpgs and life sims.

It's a joke. A major part of the game's lore is
cosmic beings trying to have surrogate children through people on earth.

some good games for your Sister were already mentioned.

Puzzle quest is a RPG match 3 game that is very casual friendly with Story. http://store.steampowered.com/app/12500/

Maybe she likes Minecraft, her baby certainly will want to play it in some years.

Tales from the Borderlands is really funny and the most un-TellTale un-Borderlands Telltale-Borderlands Game. http://store.steampowered.com/app/330830/

Hatoful Boyfriend is a nonsense-funny Dating sim where the main Girl dates male Pigeons http://store.steampowered.com/app/310080/

What about some german funny/slapstick Adventures?
deponia: http://store.steampowered.com/app/214340/
Or book of unwritten Tales http://store.steampowered.com/app/279940/

Or normal Myth like Adventures:
The longest Journey is about a Female Artist who travels between parellel Worlds: http://store.steampowered.com/app/6310/

Or maybe Recettear: A girl who runs a Shop in a Town where RPG Heroes go in and out daily? http://store.steampowered.com/app/70400/

Layton games.

....which are on the 3DS and DS, that the 3ds has total retrocompatibility with (including region free retrocompatibility ... and that is weird)

The 3DS has a double game (buy 1 wins 2 in the same cartridge) of Puzzle & Dragons and a Mario version of Puzzle & Dragons that works basicaly like Puzzle Quest

Undertale sounds perfect. I think she'd love the story and mechanics (you don't have to kill anyone). This is just anecdotal, but I've been able to get some of my non-gaming friends to try it and they really liked it! The story /characters carry the game. Can be frustrating towards the end, but doesn't require grinding or anything like that.

Viva Pinata, too. Might enjoy the animal collection bit. It also looks and sounds very nice.

I actually think the Sims is a good choice for her if it's what she wants anyway, because it's a game that won't penalize you for suddenly stepping away from it to take care of things. There aren't any boss fights or intense story-heavy cutscenes that you'd feel reluctant to leave in the middle of.

I also think a 3DS + Animal Crossing New Leaf would be good.

Her husband actually just bought her a 3DS for her birthday, apparently, so that opens up some options. I'm going to investigate all of the games mentioned - thanks a ton, Gaf!

Just wanted to clarify for anyone else entering the thread that she's in no way averse to violence or gore, provided the context and setting is interesting to her (as in, she's not going to get into Battlefield, but a violent game with a fantasy or anime aesthetic would be fine).

Does life is strange get better or something?

I played the trial, and it just seems like a terrible high school drama with forced buzz words the devs thought millennials or something would like.

Maybe Style Savvy: Trendsetters on 3DS? (Or New Style Boutique 2 if European) It's a fairly simple but very customisable and laid back management-type game. It has something resembling a story, though it's not a very important or deep one. Lots of clothes and outfits to collect, if she's into that.

+1 for Life is Strange, but since 3DS is a possibility now, PROFESSOR LAYTON!!!

One of my favorite gaming franchises, and it seems perfect for her particular match of taste and free time available.

Professor Layton is the best <3

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

It doesn't fit all the criteria (story), but if she likes Sims and cute pokemon, she might enjoy it.

It does get better but the awkward use of slang is constant throughout. It also revolves around the friendship between the two central characters so if you don't care about that, it's probably not for you.

OP, you've many games with romances stories.
There was a thread on Gaf about those games but I lost it.

So if your friend like romance stories without too much difficulties, here're some recommandations :

> PC <
Amnesia : http://store.steampowered.com/app/359390/
Clannad : http://store.steampowered.com/app/324160/

> 3DS <
Any Harvest moon games, for example : http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/qu26XBZgOgcVJckkKWglAJZjO63iUyPt
Don't get her Rune factory 4, that game can be a bit hard for her.

Psvita do have more romantic story games, though.
So if you've one you could lend it to her.

Otherwise, I would recommand her to get Animal crossing because that game can be played whenever she can without the risk to be engrossed with a story.

3DS games in particular are very nice for someone with a need to stop playing at the drop of a hat, thanks to sleep mode.

Fantasy Life*, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Story of Seasons, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, Rune Factory 4*, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, and Tomodachi Life are probably the most compatible with an avid player of The Sims (I'm one, too, and own and have played all of these games).

Disney Magical World* is also pretty ace if the target player likes app-type sim games and Disney. It has a ton of content/variety of content and is shockingly good, considering most people probably don't even know it exists. Style Savvy: Trendsetters might also be good, or New Style Botique & New Style Botique 2: Fashion Forward if you happen to be in an EU/AUS region.

*These games all have fairly basic action based combat, DMW is the easiest, Fantasy Life is a little harder, and Rune Factory 4 is the most difficult of the three. Unfortunately, these are the games with the best storytelling.

Thanks, yeah I don't think I'm going to buy it.

Fantasy Life. It's similar to sims...not really, but it has sim qualities, and can be regularly picked up, put down and picked up again.

The hell at Life is Strange. You guys think that works in short bursts? K den.

Bravely Default for the 3DS sounds perfect for her. Has the cute factor, the difficulty can be tailored to her tastes and it's good for picking up and putting down often.

So I'm trying to buy Life is Strange for her on Xbox, but. . .I don't think I can? Haven't been able to find anywhere selling the digital code, and the physical edition doesn't come out until January. Game looks relatively graphically intensive, so I doubt she'll be able to play it on her PC.
