Game(s) of the Generation

It's curious that I haven't noticed many MP-only titles on the list. For me, number one would be Battlefield 3. I know it has SP, but we all know how that turned out.

It's the only game I've played every day since launch every day.

Other than that:

Bad Company 2
Hotline Miami
Shogun 2: Total War
Skyrim
Fallout 3
Combat Mission: SF and BfN

marc^o^

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
Uncharted 2
The Last of Us
PES Playmaker
Fifa 13

are the only 4 games that I would give a 10, for various reasons.

Too early to tell. Right now, if i have to pick 20 games, the list would be as follows (in no particular order):

Mass Effect (the series)
Street Fighter IV (and follow ups)
Demon's Souls
Dark Souls
Dead Rising
Vanquish
Bayonetta
Red Dead Redemption
GTA V
The Last Of Us
Bioshock Infinite
Skyrim
Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2
Portal
FEZ
Batman Arkham Asylum
Dragon's Dogma (my guilty pleasure)
Mirror's Edge
Tokyo Jungle (another guilty pleasure)
Fallout 3 (i haven't played NV yet)

EDIT: i forgot XCOM: EU, add it to the list.

Would it be premature to say GTA V? I'm not even done with it, but man what a game.

EDIT: honorable mention to BioShock, Mass Effect trilogy, Assassin's Creed II, and Dark Souls

Not nearly enough people saying the Rock Band series here.

I'm typically a single player game dude, but Rock Band gave me the kind of fun times with friends that games haven't had in a long time. The popularity of it in the rhythm game heyday of 2008/2009 literally caused me to form friendships that will last me the rest of my life.

Either that, RDR, SMG, Bioshock. Obvious stuff there.

Made an agreement with another GAF member, refused to honor it because he was broke, but then had no problem continuing to buy video games.
Simple, deadly premonition . Right Zach?

GOTG can be only one and as such this title belongs to Demon's Souls.

I could write an 10k words essay about why Demon's Souls is the best roleplaying game in history.

I have beaten more than 150+ RPGs in my 22 years+ gaming carrer including Ultima games, Baldur's Gate, Fallouts, Mass Effects, Final Fantasies, Dragon Quests, Deus Ex etc. - you name the RPG, I've beaten it - yet the best RPG I have ever played is a 2009 title from a japanese studio.

Demon's Souls redefined what I expect from roleplaying games. Demon's Souls is my GOTG and RPG of the Forever.

Ten of my favorite console (I only have a 360) games this gen in no particular order:

Fallout New Vegas
Halo 3
The Darkness 2
The Walking Dead
Trials Evolution
Spec Ops: The Line
Portal
Alan Wake
Mirror's Edge
Bioshock

This list would probably look quite different if I included PC games, though.

Gears of War, Uncharted 2, The Last of Us, Minecraft, Bioshock Infinite, Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade, Demon's Souls, Portal 2, Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV - V, FIFA 11, Rock Band 3, Mass Effect..

The very best of a great, great gen imo.

While I consider 3DS and Wii U to have started the 8th gen early, some don't, so they can add these two little beauties to the pile:

And good times are still ahead...

Quite a few of them are certainly not really the objectively 'best' games on the generation, but just ones which resonated a lot with me for some reason, or just specific aspects or mechanics elevate them in my mind above others, but here, in a very rough order:

- Portal 1 (and The Orange Box as a whole, but specifically Portal
- Mass Effect 2
- Bioshock Infinite
- Bioshock 1
- Portal 2
- Just Cause 2
- Assassins Creed II
- Mirror's Edge
- Minecraft
- The Witcher 2
- Burnout Paradise

EDIT - Goddamnit, keep forgetting games I was going to put on. For shame.

It's a toss up between Halo 3 and Oblivion for me. Both games IMO, are absolutely fantastic and I have spent way too many hours playing both of them.

I'm probably going to have to say Halo 3 due to how it's probably my favourite game of all time. Oblivion is definitely close behind though.

I came late into the gen (with Alan Wake's release) and only have a PS3 since last year so I haven't played that much games.

2. Forza Horizon
3. Portal 2
4. GTAV (so far)
5. Alan Wake
6. RDR
7. Bioshock Infinite
8. The Last of Us
9. The Walking Dead
10. Skyrim

If I had to give only one, I'd choose Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm fully aware of its flaws, but, as a long-time fan, it hit me on so many levels that it has earned a place in my heart.

Other notable games that stand above the crowd:
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum -- Big Batman fan, and this game made me feel like him.
  • Bioshock -- The atmosphere and memorable story twist.
  • Braid -- I loved the concept, art, music, and story.
  • Mass Effect 2 -- This is when ME "clicked" for me.
  • Uncharted 2 -- The right blend of story, gameplay, humor, and overall charisma.
