GAME UK launches 'elite' loyalty scheme

GAME is launching a new loyalty scheme that will cost gamers £36 a year.

It's in addition to its existing loyalty card service, which rewards points based on purchases and can be used to offset the cost of future titles.

The GAME Elite scheme basically offers consumers extra loyalty points on top of what they'd already get. That's 10% extra points for all physical games, merchandise and accessories, 4% for consoles, VR, phones and tablets and an additional 2% on digital purchases and pre-owned.

In addition, the firm will make available exclusive offers to GAME Elite members, beginning with PlayStation VR bundles, Xbox One consoles and a selection of games.

Anyone that signs up now, can get 12 months membership for £33.

GAME insists that consumers cannot lose with this Elite loyalty service. It says that if members have received "less points back from purchases than the fee you have paid for your membership for those 12 months, we will give you the difference back in points".

Sounds like bollocks to me. You'd save more than £36 a year if you just shopped elsewhere.

Fuck off Game.

10% more points on games you're already gauging the eyes of your customers on. I guess they're not making so much on Insurance now instore they need to upsell future discounts.

Ahahaha, when I read the title I was expecting them to test the waters with the US Amazon/Best Buy loyalty club and take 30% off. Fuck me, right? Fucking Game.

The cash equivalent of loyalty card points is 2.5% on games and 5% on pre-orders. So even a best case scenario ignoring the wording that says 10% extra points (implying it's 10% of the 2.5% to put on top), that's still only 15% on a pre-order while paying £36 a year and paying over the odds because you're shopping at GAME. Totally not worth it.

30% off pre-orders and I'd be in.

Just another thing they'll try to upsell on the rare occasions you actually go into a GAME shop. These guys don't even pricematch their own website, so I don't believe there is any serious intent to make inroads into their inflated high street prices.

Game can piss of have not shopped their for years robbing bastards no offence to staff that work their my issue it with the corp its self

LMAO same

A hot mess

One thing not noted in the OP that is in the link says that if you spend more on membership than you get back, you do get the difference back in points. So i found the single good thing they're doing at least. You can't lose money, other than by not shopping elsewhere.

This doesn't sound like a very good deal and a bit of flailing around looking for extra revenue streams.

I've got to say though, every thread about GAME features streams of people complaining about in store prices, wondering why they don't just charge internet prices?

They can't charge internet prices. The extra cost of running a retail shop is why the games cost more. It is pointless complaining about the higher prices, it is built into their model as a bricks and mortar shop.

If it was as easy as just charging less to promote business, they would have done it years ago, the people running this aren't complete morons.

How much longer will game stores last? EB Games in Canada has started cold calling customers like they're refrigerator salesmen or something. It seems like game stores are universally faltering.

Here you go GAME

I don't need another auto-renewing subscription when I can save substantially more every time I buy a game practically anywhere else in the UK.

Great. Their internet site could charge internet prices though, but it's cheaper than in-store, yet more expensive than everywhere else.

They'll be gone soon. At least this incarnation will be.

This genuinely shocked me last time I went in.

I did a survey regarding this a couple of months back.

Looks like they chose the worst tier of our the options in the survey.

However the reward points do build up fast. I preordered games from ps4 launch. At announcement so they're £37.99 rather than 54 and I managed to buy my pro using reward points alone.

Think of all the ignorant family members that will be roped into this dodgy shit as it's pushed hard at the tills. Shameless and a scam.

Just been in game for injustice 2. Version with dlc, £60.

Argos same version £44.99.

There you go saved you half the membership right there.

GAME is such a relic of the past. The fact that they charge more for new releases than most online shops alone should have sunk them by now.

Of course there are costs to running physical shops, but Game is also the market leader with hundreds of shops and a significant cut of the UK market, particularly on hardware. If they can't arrange any kind of better deal than smaller chains or even independent specialist retailers with that kind of bulk-buying power then it all just seems a bit pointless.

how many games would I need to buy to earn £36 of reward points so I've broke even? far too many
I feel sorry for the idiots who get taken in by this and inevitably lose even more when game go bust again and don't honour the reward schemes

Went on their website and their " exclusive Elite deals" are pretty funny. All in-store only.

Destiny 1 the collection: £19.99
Save £20 off an XB1 S bundle
Final Fantasy XII pre-order upgrade to limited edition free
Free Super Stardust when you buy PSVR
£50 off Turtle Beach's overpriced Elite Pros

As noted above, if you do not break even, you get the difference back as points anyway. So at least there's that.

Well it's definitely a scheme alright, not so sure on the loyalty part though.

Their website is straight up trash, you cannot browse the shop by department link that appears when you click the game logo because it disappears.

Haven't they been circling the drain for years now?

I'm forever seeing press releases about quarterly profits falling below expectations, because they don't seem to understand that a boost around a new console launch is exactly that - and that one good month doesn't suddenly mean the failing antiquated business is saved.

Injustice 2 Deluxe Edition (steelbook + 3 DLC characters) is only available at GAME. You're comparing standard to Deluxe.

Wait, so you have to pay to get more reward points to save money? How much would you need to spend too get the £36 cost of the loyalty scheme back before you even start to enjoy the benefits?

I've not been in my local game in years though, because it turned to crap when last gen started, and then they took over Gamestation and became a primarily preowned shop, including selling preowned versions for more than new ones.

The only thing I use then for nowadays are exclusive editions and PSN vouchers.

There's a great deal of misinformation here.

The clincher is that if you don't make £36 of reward points in a year, you get the difference added onto your account.

Why the fuck would OP not add all the information? You're literally making money from it if you shop there.

Basically giving them an advance loan.

^That.

I think the question is 'Why the fuck you you shop there?'.

But unfortunately you can walk across the street to Tesco and buy the exact same game for £15 less. This is not a viable business model in this market. How many more times will they go into administration before someone get's it?

Many other retailers charge the same in their stores as on their site. Perhaps not dedicated gaming stores (how many of those even exist anymore?), but yeah.

Haha oh GAME UK
I went in one of those shops on holiday.
Walked inside looked at the prices and i started laughing straight in the face of guy working there.

Day was good

Fuck GAME UK 😍😍

Fuck off GAME. You're a necessary evil in my life because of "exclusive" collectors editions. I'd rather buy 180 McChicken Nuggets than give you £36 for fuck all.

If you don't shop in Game, you are literally making money.

This is the only fact that matters. Why the hell would I do some shitty loyalty scheme with GAME when I can just pop over the road to Tesco or Argos/Sainsburys and save *at least a tenner* straight away usually on brand new games.

Because the staff clearly set the prices...

So you preorderd and purchased over £7k worth from game to buy a ps4 pro?are you could have got what ever you purchased from there ANYWHERE. Else and probably came away £1500 quid up 😉
