Gameboy Advance SPs are magical.

I'm really tempted to buy one of those Rose Colored Gaming OG GBAs... I never heard of that site before, but they make some amazing stuff, damn.

I miss my SP... I wish I never gave it away to my cousin. Of course, the backlight stopped working, so it was incredibly hard to even see the game (for me, at least).

I can sell you one for way cheaper. I don't do custom paint jobs though. Although, I might start doing more black buttons (they're vinyl dyed, not painted).

GBA is such an awesome system, but for me the best way to play the games is this:

I do love my Micro, though.

Sp is a second best gameboy next to micro. Love them both. What surprise me is that nobody complained about hand cramp back then but a lot bitching about DS/3DS nowadays.

My one true love.

Still plays GBA games perfectly to this day.

Especially Mega Man Battle Network.

It's pretty cool except it would cramp my hands like none other. Sadly, the 3DS is only a bit better so I don't play handhelds as much as I'd like. DS phat was magical though, perfect ergonomics, and the lite wasn't bad either.

Lotta GBA talk today... Huh. I recently rebought a GBA, as I got rid of my GBA compatible DS a long time ago. Bought a backlit SP, still haven't opened it. Well, eventually.

Wait, so there are 2 versions of GBA SP? A backlit one and a non-backlit one? I used to have a silver one but I can't remember if it was backlit or not (I'm leaning towards not), and I traded it in for the DS fat. I had tons of great gaming memories on that machine so I was thinking about buying a new one.

Is there any way to tell just by looking if it's backlit or not?

how much is way cheaper?

The Gameboy Micro is even more magical

It's great that it exists, but the screen is pretty small. I saw one at goodwill, but someone had stolen it out of the box. Apparently $3 is too much to pay for a boxed GB Micro.

yes, just look on the bottom and see which model number it is. If it ags 101 then that the backlit version

GBASP has such a great design. It felt so comfortable in your hands, and the backlight was SO, SO welcome after years of lightless handhelds. Silver was the best.

Not at a reasonable price and in good physical condition :( Not that I've ever been able to find anyway.
I got super lucky and found one on craigslist for $30 in decent condition. Came with SMB3 too.

I had a hard time believing I found a backlit one until I turned it on before I paid.

Still have my GBA SP NES edition. I will never sell it. Ever.

That said, I did love the original GBA form factor. I could totally see myself spending way too much money for one of these:

I totally ending up spending too much money on this. I am weak, but a GBA modded to look like an OG Game Boy? I couldn't say no.

Hope it doesn't take too long to get here.

I am strongly trying to resist the urge to get one of the black ones, but I don't know if I'll manage once they restock.

Post some impressions once it comes.

How stupid I feel for never getting one of these... Weren't they being sold as low as 40 bucks a piece brand new at one point? =[

I only have the front lit GBA SP (the original GBA was driving me crazy with its difficult to see screen). Didn't realize they made a back lit one in 2005 around the time of the micro. Wasn't interested in the micro so didn't pay close enough attention to realize they redesigned the GBA SP for back lighting. Damn! Oh well you snooze you lose :-\

wait they had non backlit sp's?

edit: oh derp I was assuming backlit just meant a lit up screen instead of relying on other light :p

This thread makes me remember how handheld gaming was before backlights (and frontlights) were standard. Man, we really are spoiled now.

Nyko Wormlights, you have served us well back then.

I totally agree. The back-lit screen and incredibly tiny, laptop form made it feel so amazing. It is currently tied with my Vita as favorite portable gaming device of all time.

I actually got into bed one night with my original GBA to play Super Mario Land.

MFW I turned on the unit. I just straight up forgot.

It never came out in Purple. Did you paint it yourself? I think the backlit model only came out in Onyx, Baby Blue, and Pink.
I know there are refurbished ones on ebay that come with a pouch and really shitty game, colors are black or purple. Purple was really sexy looking but a bit more so I got black. The thing looks brand new and works great.

Yeah those are custom. They look pretty cool though.

Yep, this thread has got me eyeing this exact model. So good.. but $150 + $25 P+H to Aus? Ouch.

I'm seriously considering it, but I've got a DS Lite that plays all my GBA games (don't have GB/GBC games) with a nice backlit screen and comfortable form factor, so it's pretty hard to justify. Or maybe I don't justify it, and get it anyway :P

I have a custom painted black backlit SP I bought on Ebay for $70 last year. They make em for about $80 now. Eventually I'll get my 2 non-backlit ones replaced by backlit ones. :D
