GameCube celebrates 10th birthday in the UK

Nintendo launched its fourth major home console 10 years ago today in Europe. A decade ago, the GameCube was born.

The console launched in a blaze of excitement flared up by a pre-emptive pre-launch price cut. The GameCube launched in the UK for £129, in either purple or black.

Nintendo's launch line-up included the often overlooked Luigi's Mansion, the beautiful water physics of Wave Race: Blue Storm and the best version of a Hoth level ever in a Star Wars game, found in Factor 5's Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader.

Sales started briskly, with 75,000 consoles shifted in the UK during the GameCube's first two days on sale (PlayStation 2 managed 40,000). But the console would spend the majority of its life in third place.

The GameCube eventually notched up a total of 21.74 million sales, a little behind the Xbox, Microsoft's more powerful first console effort (24 million sold). But both would always trail the already-ingrained PS2 (a whopping 153.6 million sold).

Damn 10 years ago?It does not feel like its been that long already.

The GameCube is the console I'm playing the most at the moment, actually. Rebuilding my collection.

At the time I always preferred the PS2, and I only really bought the 'Cube for Resident Evil, but of that generation I always find the GameCube is the console I keep returning to. It was a really, really capable system in terms of power and I love the controller more and more as time goes on.

Also.. £129? That seems outrageously cheap for a console launch.

The thing I'll remember most about May 2002 is that at the time I was banging an older lady who happened to be an Actuary that drove me around in a sports car and had more money than I'll ever see in my life time and she had stunning boobs and she also lived next door to Carole Smillie off the telly.

I stopped seeing her because I wanted to play Pikmin (I had an imported NTSC system which I bought at roughly the same time as the UK release).

That is all.

I didn't get one until late 2004 I think. It came out in a time where I was one of those people who felt he had to act manly in front of his friends. And playing Gamecube was not manly for some reason. And I refused to play, or even look at, Wind Waker because of how it looked. But then one day came when I saw a coupon for a black GC for 800 SEK (around $80-$90 at the time). No games or memory cards included, but I bought it anyway. And since I had mostly come to my senses regarding my "manliness" at that time, the game I bought with it was Wind Waker and it blew my mind that I had kept myself from playing this gem over something so stupid. Then I bought the must haves like Smash Bros. and Mario Kart and Super Mario Sunshine, and also bought 3 extra controllers for 4-player games.

In the end I had a really good time with the GC, and I still have it hooked up to my CRT. Mainly for the GC Gameboy Player, but when the mood strikes, me and my friends will play 4-player Smash Bros and Mario Kart to this day.

I still think the 2on2 matches in Mario Kart DD is the most fun I've ever had playing a Mario Kart game. I'll never get the hate for that game.

Nintendo's last great generation.
You may find the truth of this is actually that Gamecube-era was the point in time where you made the transition from boy to man. As shown in my previous post I was already a man at that point so what you say means nothing to me.

Hahaha! Because of this post, I was contextually served an over 50s mature dating ad on this page. It has been an extremely long day at work, and this post gave me a much needed chuckle.

So you're saying all adults are cynical arseholes? :P heheh

There's so many awesome Gamecube games but come on man- Smash was different. It's the Gamecube game.

What's wrong with it? Except for the D-pad which is really too small for it's own good. The ergonomics are fucking great.

Yup, I loved and still love the Gamecube controller. I never understood how people found the button layout difficult to adjust to, I thought it was great, and the controller just melted into your hand.

Can we celebrate birthdays of things that were born dead?
I have a Gamecube, but the damn games are next to impossible to find dammnit!

I've never understood the difference size buttons (A,B,X,Y) and the size & position of that Z "trigger".

It's no Wii, but it had some good games.

Bad controller, though.

edit: I remember my first time playing it at a friend's house. He showed me Rogue Squadron II, and I was all like "THE FUTURE IS HERE"

And it's robust as hell too. You can squeeze it as hard as you want and it wont make a squeek, unlike the DualShock for instance, or really any controller that came before it. I recently played a ton of N64 games, and then I switched to the GC and when I picked up the controller I actually said "Wow". I had forgotten how good it felt compared to other controllers. The Xbox controller was also very robust though, but not as ergonomic IMO.

I agree about the Z button. But the size difference was to make a sort of standard in all games if I were to guess. The fact that A is so big means that the main action in any game will be put on that button. It's also easy for anyone to understand that the A button will be the most important button in any game. The B button being smaller, and red, signified that it should be thought of as the opposite of the A button. For example, in menus you press A to select and B to go back. X and Y is their own size because those are meant to be like extra buttons that are not required by every game. This is just me guessing though, and there are certainly examples of games that put the shoot button on B for example.

Edit: I should have made a new post instead of editing this one..

My favorite console ever and the first one I bought with my own money.
Didn't have as many games as PS2, but seeing that tiny, efficient, sturdy little purple lunchbox sitting next to my TV still warms my heart.

It game me Eternal Darkness, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Four Swords, Killer Seven, Pikmin, Resident Evil 4, Paper Mario 2, Pikmin 2, Wario Ware, Odama, Super Monkey Ball 2, Rogue Leader, Tales of Symphonia, Super Mario Sunshine, Skies of Arcadia, Luigi's Mansion, Resident Evil Remake, Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Vietwtiful Joe, Ikaruga, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, F-Zero GX, and numerous others than I am forgetting. One of the greatest, most diverse and rich cavalcades of software ever conceived.

It had one of the most perfect controllers, was incredibly durable and reliable, and packed a lot of power for its form factor. It was amazing for social, accessible multiplayer.

It had the best game of its generation, Metroid Prime.

I salute you Gamecube, you magnificent bastard.

The Gamecube controller is horrible because it's only made to control Nintendo's games.

That, and they were trying to make a less intimidating controller that still had as much shit on it as their competitors.

That said, it's comfortable as fuck. Good thing I pretty much only have Nintendo games on GCN... that, and Super Monkey Ball, I guess.

good thing wii got that BC, cause i love me some GC games. still pop in def jam: fight for NY just to punch Sean Paul in the mouth. "dutty yo"

And to commemorate the 10th anniversary, we're going to have a limited GameCube run in all stores throughout the United Kingdom.

That's what I was expecting, anyway.

Probably Ninty's worst console. Super Mario Sunshine was disappointing, as was Wind Waker.

Resident Evil 4 and Luigi's Mansion saved the day for me.

First, I liked the Gamecube.

Pikmin 2, DK Jungle Beat, and Animal Crossing are some of my favorite games ever. Also I liked the console itself, it was more reliable than the competition, and the price was right.

Let's go over the Gamecube controller, feature by feature.

#1, it fits well in your hand. Provided you have small hands, which I do, so that's a huge plus.

Also, the left analog is great provided it's not warped yet.

The A and B buttons are also well placed for action/cancel/shoot whatever commands.

So there's four things going for it, and I'm being generous.

The bean buttons X and Y are horribly placed in any game that requires you to move from button to button or press two buttons at the same time. Try to play "Gladius" with that controller.

The L and R triggers don't allow you to do anything that requires split second timing, just because they require such a deep depression. They're also uncomfortable to sink your fingers into.

The Z button is one of the most awfully placed things ever put into a controller, and developers agree, since it's almost always the least important function.

The D-pad might as well not be there at all, because it's too small to do anything a D-pad would normally do.

The C-stick's shape is mind-bogglingly ill-conceived. It's a poor camera control, poor menu navigator, and it's frankly just uncomfortable to use generally.

So you have a controller which is barely preferable for any type of game, and completely worthless for most genres.

Resident Evil 4 and Luigi's Mansion saved the day for me.

I'd say it's interesting that the one fucking Mario game was pretty much a universal disappointment (that said, I still enjoy it- go figure), and yet I'd still consider the console to be killer. I mean, look at Mama's list of games.

And Wind Waker was a beautiful game.

I actually tried to play Sunshine recently, but I couldn't stand more than 15 minutes before I turned it off. I don't know why but I just didn't have fun playing it. :(

I'll agree with most of what you're saying. But I've never had issues with this particular complaint myself. When I play Smash Bros for example, I use X to jump. You can press down B, A and X at the same time without even moving your thumb. The Y button is a bit harder to reach though I'll agree, but try pressing X and Triangle at the same time on a DualShock without moving your thumb.

I guess it can vary depending on how you hold the controller though.

It's the music. It messes with your mind.
You know what, I think that might have contributed to it a little bit. I was never a huge fan of the music in that game.

Nah it's the cutscenes!
Oh yeah and that too. The story is a bit of a turnoff IMO. But then again I was willing to look past that, but when the game began and I was in a level, I was just not having fun. =/
