GameMaker Studio Standard Edition is free for a limited time

Cool, thanks for the thread. Been interested in the software for a while now but didn't bother with the free version due to its heavy limits.

Yall should get this! Everyone should try making a game sometime. It's a blast.

I can now finally create my own Super Smash Bros. clone which will be buggy as fuck with the worst art and character design in the world.

Coming to a PC near you: Smash Bros. PC.

2020, pls understand

This is really cool, just starting doing codecademy again, this'll give me a more practical environment to play around in as I go.

Oh good now I don't have to use my old laptop that has an older version of Game Maker I paid for anymore. All because they wouldn't give out codes for it to unlock it again. Was still worth paying though.

Gonna make Dogen Quest. Silent protagonist of course - except for responses to questions which will be phrased appropriately. Dogecoins as currency.

Are the included Pro features worth the $35 upgrade price over standard? I would probably never purchase the extra modules Pro supports, but didn't know if the included texture management and features were worth it or if I should look at separate tools elsewhere for some of those things?

Been playing around with the free version for a bit, been trying to get a platformer up and running.

Will be interesting to see how Free and Standard editions differ.

If you're making mobile games, texture management is an absolute must. Really any major game with tons of sprites is going to need texture management. But moreso for mobile since you're working within 512-2gb of memory.

Also, here's a list of games that use Game Maker: http://www.yoyogames.com/showcase

Weird, it failed to extract and won't allow me to do anything with the installer..

Just tried it, got it installed and given a key that works. Try downloading it again?

(edit) Curious if anyone knows some good tutorials to get started with? Really interesting in messing with this semi-seriously.

Just deleted it and I'm going to re-install it.

Using .RARarchiver or something on Mac OS X, I'll post what happens..

The biggest + to getting professional is buying the modules so you can export your games to cool places. The added features of pro are so advanced that, if you ever made a game advanced enough to warrant them, you'd probably want to exporting to cool places anyways.
Nice, picking it up. Bigger fan of Unity but it isn't a bad thing to have this tucked away somewhere.
In my limited experience with Unity, I get the impression that Unity is 1000% more flexible but it's easier to get a prototype up and running in GM.

If anyone has any basic questions about making stuff in GM, I might be able to help!

Awesome, thanks. Definitely not familiar with any of this so I'd be going in fresh, but I doubt I would be exporting to mobile or anything else for a WHILE so I guess the $50 upgrade fee at a later time wouldn't be bad (or possibly even catch it in a similar sale).

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll be good on Standard for now just to get started, and it's probably a better idea anyways to see if I can even get something to evolve from this.

Gonna make Vanquish 2

Sweet!

I'm going to make a game about a hacker with a mobile phone, make bloated trailers to get people hyped and disappear from the face of the earth right before release date. It's gonna be great.

Looks like the offer is Windows only, it keeps trying to download a .exe file.

I just downloaded the free version in the hope there would be a registration area. It just opens the program and tells you that you have x hours remaining.
