Gameplayer: The Best 100 Videogames

Just FYI, this is a repackaged version of Edge Magazine's best 100 games special, rebranded with the Gameplayer packaging. I was going to buy it but I hate it when Australian publishers do this...because newsagents won't carry the 'real' version. :/

Yes, we figured it out. I wsa wondering where it came from, because the write-up for each games is fairly comprehensive and seemed like it would take a lot more effort than what most top 100 would normally put in.

Do you know that it's the newsagents who don't want to accept the real thing? Or is more a case of Edge's publisher not wanting to bring it? Maybe Gameplayer is doing the public a favour by making it available.

#1 is a no brainer, its probably always going to be OoT, its like the Gone with the Wind or Citizen **** of gaming.

RE4 at #2 make me so happy. I think it is the best game of this decade (ok after Zelda MM), easily my favorite game of last generation. Its a game that is getting the praise it deserves from the media, many top games list have RE4 very very high up. It seems like RE4 will be remembered as one of the greatest games ever made, as it should be. And now comes the attack from all the people that didn't like RE4...

(where is SMB3???)

I'm guessing it's kind lumped in with SMW - the mag stated they'd try and not fit loads of games from the same series unless they were major changes.

Unless an official gameplayer.com.au representative wants to make an apperance (Yeah, you, I'm calling you out mate :) ) I'm just making an educated guess, but I think it's more from the publisher side of things. Like a notice sent to the newsagent distributors from the publisher: "we have the Australian license for this magazine, so dont sell the UK version thanks".

I remember the UK version of Official Nintendo Magazine being virtually impossible to find once the Australian version started. The Australian version that called Julian Rignall an old fart. Fuck the Australian version of the Official Nintendo Magazine. Ditto for the Australian version of Edge. Most pointless Australian rebranding effort ever. After you've done an interview with the - what, five or so now? - Australian game development companies, what more Australian content is there to do in a magazine like Edge? Agh. Thanks for making the real Edge so hard to find for a couple of months.

I'm used the US versions of most gaming magazines not being available here due to the coverdiscs not working, but sheesh.

My eyes will always be covered by rose tinted nostalgia, but whenever I see OoT up on the tops of list, I just say 'of course'.

There's no thing such as Top 100 games ever. Only 100 of the greatest games ever. There really is no use trying to put a number in front of any of them. Just put up an alphabetical list of a hundred of the greatest games of all time, and it'd be much more accurate.

There's no way in hell anyone can list one game that's their favourite game of all time. I don't believe that. I believe you can say a game that is among their favourite games, but how can one really compare OoT to Monkey Island 2 or SWOS? Those three are among my favourite games of all time, but there's no way to put one above the other, because of their differences.

I have 182 hours on FFXII and can't stop so in my experience I don't wholly disagree with it being so high on the list... though maybe not THAT high. Just saying.

I can't fathom how so many people dislike FFXII, it has problems but it's cleary a great game. If it's not your thing, then fine, but don't go around saying it's a bad game, because it's very clearly not.

And whenever I see it, I just say "Argh that worthless piece of shit game wasn't even in the top 100 of 1998!" God I hate it. And RE4 is even worse! And yet these shitty, shitty games are going to be dominating lists for all time. It's a disgusting and depressing thought.

The problem with FFXII being on the list appears to be the fact that it's the same old media irrationality of holding the last Final Fantasy game as the best irregardless of its actual quality, especially relative to some of the 'real' classics they get right. There were numerous lists which included VII, VIII, IX, X before, and in a few years XIII will be in the list.

I agree that there's no way OOT is the best game of all time.

True, it's certainly a great one...but it's not aged well at all. And it's not perfect by any means. The play control mechanics have improved in the sequels. And the camera angles are often confusing and hard to figure out. And it's just a little bit too 'hold your hand' easy for my personal tastes. I'd rather play Zelda 1 which gave you almost no hints at all.

FFXII is the best FF game of all time, and people always have FF games in their top ten so I don't see why that's the thing of all things to object about. list has tons of sins, that's not one of 'em!

Biggest sin: Animal Crossing appearing anywhere on a "best" list at all automatically invalidates any taste the people who compiled this list could possibly have.

Not every game can be a masterpiece like Kirby Air Ride.
