Gamepro Feature: System Sellers: The Showdown. The winner is......

The PS3.

http://gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/games/features/95408.shtml

So which console emerges victorious? It was a close one...

1. PS3

With all the negative press lately, it's hard to imagine Sony as the winner here. But when you actually look at how many probable stellar exclusive games it has lined up for the year to come, we have to put the PS3 in the number one slot. So many of these games are surefire blockbusters such as MGS4, Killzone 2, SOCOM 4, Gran Turisimo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Ratchet & Clank...and the list goes on.

Sure, the recent negative press on the PS3's high price is definitely a factor for consumers, but the probable 10-year life cycle of the system could mean not having to shell out for another console 5 years from now. And it's all about the games, really. Even after losing the GTA exclusive, Sony's list of PS3-only games is a great reason to own a PS3, even if it's not for another 9 months.

The other driving factor about Sony is that its developers are taking chances with new games on the PS3. Look at the amount of new franchises coming to the PS3, and that's a boon for the consumer.

2. Wii

There's no doubting that the Wii has a number of blockbuster exclusive titles, but the PS3's sheer number of exclusive games beats it out...but barely. The biggest hindrance for Nintendo and the Wii is the lack of new franchises. It's all sequels for now, and while the short term success of Nintendo's established products may have the staying power to thrive for a while, everything goes stale at some point.

Look at Gears of War, and the upcoming Heavenly Sword and MotorStorm. These are new IPs that probably will lead to huge success. Nintendo needs some freshness, and it must take chances if it wants to be back on top.

3. Xbox 360

Yes, the Xbox 360 has the biggest first-party game out there, and there's no denying that Halo 3 will be a huge-scale success. It even has Gears of War, one of the most creative and critically-acclaimed new products on the gaming market. But from here, the list gets very slim. Microsoft needs a few more great reasons to own an Xbox 360 because when the PS3 picks up some steam a year (or less) down the road, it's going to be a tough battle."

I do agree with quite of bit of what they are saying, but I think they are underestimating the power of Halo 3. When the PS3 eventually gets to a more reasonable price for casuals($400?) with all of these killer apps, then I think the media will have an entirely different vision of it. Interesting read btw.

So Gamepro is essentially saying PS3 has the most sequels. Because that's the only thing that can sell systems in their mind.

Read this before, and it's overly simple and a little off (it is written by a guy named Mr. Marbles...). Not horrible, but I don't find myself agreeing. Besides...it's GamePro. When was the last time they were relevant?

So do people here actually care about anything GamePro says?

But when you actually look at how many probable stellar exclusive games it has lined up for the year to come, we have to put the PS3 in the number one slot. So many of these games are surefire blockbusters such as MGS4, Killzone 2 (surefire hit guys), SOCOM 4, Gran Turisimo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Ratchet & Clank...and the list goes on.

They actually mentioned that quite a few new IP's are coming and could be potential system sellers.

They actually had a pretty good feature on Saint's Row, but this is asstastic

While they failed to mention the same for the 360

While I admit the negative press for PS3 has been retarded, this article has got to be a joke. Its not like the PS3 looks to have overwhelming, unprecedented support, most games seem to be going multiplatform, and MS has more good looking exclsuives than ever before. No mention of bioshock, mass effect, etc? This article sucks.

Exactly. I love how so many people now post "UH OH GOOD NEWS FOR PS3!!! PILE ON!!" as if you just have to suck up the piss poor evaluation they did or else it's "UH OH JUST ANOTHER PS3 BASH-OFF!!!"

Good lord.

Killzone and Ratchet & Clank are system sellers?

No mention of Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Forza 2 and Fable 2. What the hell?

like moths to a flame... I mean, it's one positive thread in a minefield of negative, must it be disputed at all costs? :lol

i dont get the buzz about killzone

it was rated similarly to Geist

If Nintendo would make Geist 2 it wouldnt be one of the MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES FOR THE WII

unless they get the possession system right

Glowing analysis of the PS3 based on the "wait and see" argument, and declaring 360 and Wii the losers based on the whole speculation and guessing argument.

Edit: Wait, GamePro sucks Sony's dick, right?

not trying to shoot down a positive article on the PS3, and all the things they say about it is definitely true, but COME ON. to say the 360 has nothing coming when MGS is pushing out argueably the largest offering of new potentially AAA IPs in 07 leading as well as Halo 3 is just a bit ignorant. but then again... it is Gamepro ;)

clearly they're on the inside track! Honestly though, if R&C PS3 is GTA-style as rumored, with an open world and all that w/the graphics of the teaser trailer, and Killzone PS3 ends up looking as good as MotorStorm graphics-wise... why not?

It's a shitty article.

If the writer showed a hint of knowledge about the game industry, that would be one thing. But it's like he printed out an upcoming release list from ebgames and called it a day.

But yeah whatever, it's GamePro.

I totally agree with this:
The other driving factor about Sony is that its developers are taking chances with new games on the PS3. Look at the amount of new franchises coming to the PS3, and that's a boon for the consumer.

P.S. Some of you really need to grow some thick skin.

aside from the bad AI because the PS2 sucks power wise [ give it a break, its old system ] the game was really decent.

and killzone on PSP was very good too.

so give it a break, it might be huge game.

It would certainly help if the article would make any sense. They say that Wii lacks original games while all the PS3 games they list are sequels, and they don't mention Fable 2 and Mass Effect, follow ups to to two Xbox million sellers (Fable/KotOR). If Killzone and Ratchet & Clank are system sellers, so are Forza and PGR.

I agree that the article does have holes in it(like the X360 games that weren't listed), but I thought the article had some valid points. Of course it is only an opinion of a video game publication, nothing more, nothing less.

what IF nintendo gets out their non game squad (Wii music, Wii motorsports, Healthpack, Wii cooking) and those games become as popular as Wii sports, nintendogs or brain training

i know its highly unlikely that Nintendo will follow the nongamer path and also its unlikely that these games will sell but still its a possibility:)

unless they make a good looking pre-rendered trailer and claim it's all in-game, right

Fixed.

Did Geist sell over 4 million units? Killzone is a giant franchise, one of the best selling games last-gen.
The article itself doesn't go too deep, another typical GP article.

Soooo they praise the PS3 because of endless sequels, but Nintendo's downfall will be endless sequels. While apparently the 360 has nothing at all coming this year other than Halo 3.

I didn't even check the link, self-owned:D

Just read the full article and they list all the X360 games that were missing from the summary.

Hype and gorgeous graphics are typically enough to lure in most causal gamers. Also, how do you know that they didn't fix the problems from Killzone 1 and magically created an excellent, solid sequel? Last and not least, Killzone was a pretty good game. Actually, what hurt it so bad was the fact that it was labeled the "Halo killer". That is a recipe for disaster obviously and that is the primary reason it gets so much hate. The game itself is solid and enjoyable imo.

killzone sold 4 million... what...

1st party exclusives: 360 > Wii > PS3

3rd party exclusives: PS3 > Wii > 360

...oh, and Wii Play's going to outsell every original SCEI IP next gen. :P

a 7.3 press average is average but not pretty good

Gamepro picking PS3 is like analysts picking the Bears this weekend...longshot so they can go back and say, "see!"

1st party + 2nd Party

Wii >> PS3 > X 360

3rd Party (including multiplats) 360 > PS3 > Wii

3rd Party (excluding multiplats) PS3 > 360 > Wii
