Gamepro Germany : Resident Evil 5 Video Review !

:[ It's everything after the first half (the half they can not show) of the game that's GotY making. It makes the first half look boring by comparison.
Damn you! :lol

If you read the description of the video, you'd know why it's just preview video.
They say the footage is "from close cooperation" with Capcom, which means that it's at the very least all screened, or even outright provided (i.e. the footage doesn't show them playing, but some Capcom employees playing). Not too clear.

Awesome grafix, lotsa action.

But I don't get how this is supposed to be a RE part. It's a fucking 3rd person shooter at this point. What the hell?

Good for GamePRO that they got the exclusive, I guess; I'm not down with the review though. They're just telling me what's going on in the game and then conclude with "Buy it", but I don't actually see how they came to that conclusion.

I guess I'm gonna look myself and then make up my mind, meaning I'll rent it when I come around to it and then buy it if I get hooked. Not too optimistic right now though..

Wait till you get to the dusk and night time sections.

Mmm, the footage is all HUD-less. I'd say it's Capcom provided.

Yeah, it looks a bit like the price for the exclusive review was that they're not allowed to actually say something about the gameplay or even critizise something. That review is pretty much pointless.

Edit: At least the video review is pointless, I haven't read the print review. Therefore I don't know what they write about the game.

There are already 3 reviews out so far. OPM 5/5, Gamepro Germany 93% and OXM, which I have here with me and they gave it a 9/10.

A friend is playing it and he has praise for the game. Ammo is scarce at the onset, action is tight, Sheva doesn't need a lot of baby-sitting. However only the first three chapters are out of embargo (for websites). He is on Chapter 5, I think.

From what he told me, I don't think this game is the Resident Evil the faithful/regulars would expect. More action than survival. Nothing wrong there, of course.

RE4 was more action than survival and people called it game of the generation. So I expect this game to be game of the forever.

Your schitck is getting really boring.

Eh, I'm sure it's going to appeal to a lot of people on here but it's turned into a clone of a type of game I have little interest in unfortunately. Seems like the shift to 360 bought more than just another SKU. Oh well. Enjoy.

I'm just kinda "eh" about RE 5.
I'm one who misses the scary REs.

This is just a personal opinion, but I've never really been "scared" by any REs. They've been intense and had some moments, but nothing that I can classify as being lost going from the earlier games to RE 4 and now RE 5.

It looked like any other action game in that video (albeit the most awesome action game ever). I'm more interested in seeing the story elements with Wesker and the more hideous looking monster designs.

Dunno why Capcom keeps releasing the same footage. Give us a hint of something new, I know it's there.

I agree. I've never classified RE as a horror game in the 'scary' sense, but rather in the sense that it has monsters in it. Back then it was the tension that was frightening, and it's simply a different kind of tension now. It's still just as much about survival and horror. Removal of puzzles and backtracking does not take away the core elements from the series in my eyes. I would like to see a more methodical and isolating RE in the traditional vein again someday, but these games still feel like RE to me.

REmake was tense and awesome. RE4 had no story, and was very repetive. I hate how all the RE haters bandwagoned that game, and now we're totally missing out on atmosphere and horror.

dude as far as I'm concerned this game better have bad dialogue. that line made me happy when I heard it. :lol

Yeah, I mean this is RE, even when its "good" its genesis are B-Movies. I love hokey action movie dialogue. Master of Unlocking FTW!

Is it just me or do people always add that as a sort of disclaimer?

Yeah, it's not necessarily a bad thing from a general game design perspective. It certainly doesn't hamper RE5. But, maybe there are fans of the series, like myself, who were looking forward to Capcom maybe inserting some more survival aspects into the series after the RE4 transition, rather than just expanding on the action that RE4 brought in.

I'm still going to play RE5, and I will enjoy it. But I don't find the need to claim that RE's turn from a survival game into an action game was an improvement that's welcome to stay, because it's not. Next time, Capcom, give us some real survival horror, not just an action game with a survival/horror label.

that cover system looks so out of place

and was that two or three different rail sequences?

RE4 had the mines and the section where Ashley was driving. I don't really count the boat, cause it wasn't exactly anything other than a boss battle. You could drive around the lake too. What it didn't have was you sitting behind a turret for a long ass time. :/

edit: How far into the game have they been showing? Like two thirds, right?

RE4 had one or two places where you could take cover behind objects to shield yourself from dynamite tossing ganados. It's not a 'cover system,' just more context sensitive action that you'll only see once or twice.

why didn't that chainsaw guy at 1:00 die? i don't like enemies that don't know how to die.

bad game design. they should have had you blow off armor so that you could inflict damage or something.

Gameplay wise RE5 looks primitive and more gamey in a lot of ways. Even more so than RE4. Kinda disappointing in that respect and im still waiting for the horror part of the series to show up again. I'll still buy it but the anticipation that previous entries in the series gave me isnt there with this one.

what a crapfest, can it get any more boring?

liked the first trailer and since then the game went down ... final game is a no go

Agreed.

Resident Evil 5 looks incredible, but after rewatching the Wesker Reports, and seeing Episode 1 on the RE retrospect on GT, I'm really starting to miss the horror aspect of Resident Evil. A lot.

I'll never forget the first time I came across Lisa Trevor after reading the files on the horrible experiments done on her. I'll never forget the "oh shit!" feeling from being chased by Mr. X or Nemesis. I miss narrow hallways. And I really miss the pre-RE4 music in the series.

I really, really hope that Resident Evil does a better job of balancing horror and action. I mean, Capcom can still continue the action direction while also giving us scares and creating scary atmospheres. I was playing the FEAR 2 demo, and that's a FPS with tons of action, but it also was very creepy. I was very cautious about turning the next corner.

Are there any reviews say that there are any scares or creepy locations in RE5?

I find the amount of pre-game launch backlash there is a bit strange. It'll be interesting to see how opinions change (if at all) when they play the full game.

I don't understand some of the skepticism, the game looks awesome.

some of the people here want it to play like every other third person shooter ever. They don't realize that the the game is based on the stop and gun gameplay. I mean haven't you guys noticed how the enemies always surround you slowly and not bum rush you all the time, that's obviously a deliberate game design. Adding in the fact that your controls are restricted somewhat makes it more "tense" and exciting.

Suck it down, stop-and-gun haters.

you know, for getting exclusive reviews, you have the offer a score thats worth the advertisment. LOL

gamepro germany is as useful as gamepro usa.

this review is hardly exclusive, we've had the OXM and PSM reviews being out the same time as this one.

And it is the first video review with exclusive video scene from capcom japan.

it only shows gameplay from stages we've already seen/read about. Nothing beyond chapter 3.

Do you guys really think this game isn't going to do well on review scores ? really ? reaaaaaaaally ?

I think it's going to be divisive. I've read a lot of overwhelmingly positive things about it, but then there have been some very negative previews as well (http://podcast.idlethumbs.net/news/idlenews_090205.mp3).

Really? I get the Issue today. So i dont watching this Review.

I hate the stopandgun, but the game looks so solid in that review I want to buy it and play it on easy to get rid of some of the apparent frustrations. Fuck you for the stupid controls Capcom, but I'll buy your game :LOL

The demo was decent, but I might pick this up if only for the graphics...of course I made that mistake with PoP, an incredibly repetitive game...

Things like the chainsaw/axe guys who take forever to die and the fuckin' annoying QTE when an infected grabs you are poor game design choices IMO, add to that the fake looking last-gen death animations and all this daylight/Black Hawk Down direction and you have something that's not what I expected from the sequel to the masterpiece called RE4 - just imagine the enemies to react to the bullets/damage like Killzone 2 or even F.E.A.R. 2...

I guess Mikami's absence is more and more apparent as we see more things about RE5.

If you honestly think Mikami would have broken the formula he and his team worked so hard to create during the development of RE4, after just that one game, you are awfully naive.

Where did I say that Mikami would've changed the formula? I'm complaining about some stupid game design decisions, the overall daylight direction of the game and the death animations that are PS2 quality...I don't think any improvement over death animations or darker art direction would've changed the formula...I think the formula of RE4 is still top-notch if done right.

Holy shit at some of the new screens in the German Gamepro issue. That shit looks hot.

Oh yeah, that reminds me of something I forgot to mention: review dude also says that the game gets progressively darker from level to level (which they can't show).

Thank god.

Meh, looks pretty uninteresting to me.

Also, fuck I hate it when the enemy AI takes forever to do something. Like this scene with 3 zombies and two crossbow guys. Everybody just stands still and waits for the player to be killed. And then suddenly they start running.
