Gamersyde Diaries: Wii Fit

Blimblim

The Inside Track
I feel like I'm always starting these topics the same way, but it's been a long time since our last Diaries. In fact it's not been that long, but I didn't create a topic about the Dark Sector one since the game had already been released.

Anyway, here comes our brand new GSD, and this time our team of adventurous game journalists faced terrible dangers to record the most extreme footage of Wii Fit ever recorded. Ok, it's a lie, but this video is still a lot of fun to watch!

It's all there: http://www.gamersyde.com/news_6360_en.html

As always, we welcome your comments :)

500MB downloadable content? Why do you not make a smaller downloadable format as well (since your stream seems to stop buffering after 10 seconds..)

Damn, the stream is supposed to work correctly now. Fucking hosting company...
I'll put the stream file on a temporary server in a few minutes then.

Wow, great video, I'm watching the streaming version right now and I can wait to try the Yoga exercises, thanks for the subtitled version :)

There's a subtitled version as well...

The stream is only 50MB.

That was good, but I just made two realizations about Wiifit. I don't think I have enough rechargable batteries for both my wiimote and wiifit and I don't have enough room without moving stuff around in my room to do some of the stuff they were doing in the video. I am gonna be one of those guys buying Wii fit just to hope that there will be later games that take advantage of it, so far Wii ski looks tons of fun.

You could use something like this

Great video, showed really well what wii fit is actually about. Have to say tho that the discussion "is it a game" is kinda redundant imo. If it is entertaining and worth the money, how is it important if it falls into the constructed idea of a videogame?

So you actually have to unlock the majority of the stuff? Why?

Why would they do that?

That 2 player jogging game (more like a race! :p) towards the end was awesome.

To reward you for playing the game? And probably to lead the player from easier mini-games towards the more complex stuff. Difficulty curve etc.

To motivate the player by rewarding him for exercises. To give a sense of accomplishment and progression. Also there are probably easier and harder exercises/games, and Nintendo probably doesn't want to discourage people who accidentally to the hard stuff first and get frustrated.

I would've thought the motivation would come from trying to be fit and having some fun doing it. I can see where that's coming from, but I don't think its the right decision for this game. If I got the game and I wasn't too serious about playing it I'd be mad that I couldn't get in and get what I wanted out of the game without playing it for a certain amount of time.

They did this with brain-age and I got frustrated that I couldn't do the exercises that I wanted to do so I said fuck this and stopped playing.

I feel a recommondation system would be better. The game could recommend that you wait a bit to get more acclimated to things before moving to it, but to keep it from you altogether feels cheap.

That was a great video! My main concern is still how the balance board would work on carpet. I am thinking about going to Home Depot and getting like a big piece of plywood or something to put the board on. Any other suggestions?

Does it really fall into that mythical "constructed idea of a videogame" though? I mean, you are basically doing the exact same few things over and over again.
Some people might say that it is what playing a game is, but I'm personally expecting a tad more than that from gaming.

So it's a jRPG?
sorry.

I was expecting that reply :) You may be doing more or less the same thing in jRPG (though it's debatable), but there is also the story and the discovery of new stuff all during the length of the game that will be lacking from Wii Fit.
There is progression in the sense that you will get better and the exercises will get harder, but you'll still basically will be doing the same thing as when you started playing. Same room, same trainer, same stuff on your screen.

I dunno, I did read one interview where they mentioned something about online still being hidden (whether it's possible to update or not).

Don't worry about it. I've been playing it for 2 weeks now (for review), and I've noticed no difference with or without carpet. Unless your carpet is thick and squishy, it shouldn't be an issue.

Btw: when does the "beat my score" thread start? :lol

i think there's an "official" product for this - some sort of leg-extensions? someone mentioned it in one of the other fit threads (yeah - that doesn't help much in tracking it down). would surely be a much better solution than plywood.

There are Silicon covers for the Board in the UK, and other tat too.

I have hardwood floors though so I'm sorted.

Oh that's exactly it. I think a factor that comes into play with Wii Fit (and that's something that is just different from traditional games) is the physicality of the game. You're not only moving an avatar of yours around a virtual landscape (by moving your thumb to press the analogue stick, or some buttons (or both at once!)), but you, yourself are doing the motions. You're doing all the work, you're doing the different exercises.

So in terms of content seen on screen, you're right. But looking at the motions of the player in the real world, you're not doing less than in traditional games, you're doing much more.

The fitness exercises in Wii Fit are not so much about what's seen on the screen (like in every other traditional videogame) but about what you are physically doing as a person (well, obviously).

Edit: I'm using way too many brackets, sorry. >_<

That's true enough, but isn't that exactly what a videogame isn't about though? A videogame is 99% of the time allowing me to do something I can't do in real life ;)

Oh I'm not actually disagreeing that it is something different. Most people will buy it at least partly because they believe it will make them "fitter" (a discussion I wouldn't touch with a 10 feet pole), in contrast to games which most people only buy because they want "video game entertainment".

I just found it strange like you talked in the video,

"hey it's really fun"
"but it's not a videogame"

I don't understand what that changes, you either recommend a product because it's fun and worth it or you say it's just not good, don't buy it.

So it's a videogame because it's fun ? :)

What we say is that it was fun trying it, but on the long run, it's all about fitness. It is a good product, but if you pay 90$ expecting a videogame experience out of Wii Fit, you'll waste your money. Or you're only interested in the balance board as a hypothetical gaming device, and that would be another topic.

Well that makes sense, I probably was too anal about it. As I said, I thought the video was very good. Actually, you should ask Nintendo of France if they would like to use it as a commercial. ...

sorry, I'm drunk

I'm sure they don't need anyone on the advertising side :) Commercials and big ads are all over paris, in the subway, the bus, on the streets on huge billboards, it's quite impressive. Certainly the biggest videogame launch I've ever seen, the game is just everywhere.

I just thought about the advertising aspect because your video pulled of showing the on screen action at the same time as the real life actions on the balace board very well. Advertismenent for Wii Fit is already insane enough tho, that's true. I've never seen a comparable amount of tv spots for one game (in germany),

Sorry snoopers. :P
Seeing this gif reminds of carmeldansenn or whatever the heck that annoying Swedish dance music is.

This gif should really be inserted into one of those carmeldansenn memes.
