Games in 2014 that should have received more praise and didn't?

The Talos Principle

I think it just came out too late (Dec. 11th) to land on any GOTY lists. It's averaging 88% on GameRankings with mostly 9's from all the major outlets.

Hopefully continued positive word of mouth will land the game success at a retail level.

Basically everyone ignored Consortium (PC). I get that it may not look like much but oh god, practically no one is making immersive sims anymore and this one turned out pretty well! Lots of branching dialogue and storylines.

The developers were clearly influenced by Warren Spector's One City Block idea and I've always been fascinated by the concept.

It's on sale, too!

Brilliant game. It got some great reviews at least!

Sniper Elite 3 has jank, but its still the best open world(ish) sniping I've ever played, and is a tremendous improvement over the overly scripted but promising Sniper Elite V2 in every way. Part of the allure is how hardcore it is by the fact that unlike many open games with sniping elements you don't have a silenced sniper rifle, so you have to be smart about both maintaining stealth and going loud as the needs require. SE 3 also provides for a lot more player choice in how to tackle each objective and whether to tackle certain objectives at all.

Play it on full realistic mode without assists (though I personally kept the option to save the game mid-mission and only used it at checkpoints) and you'll have something very unique to tickle your inner sniper.

Patience. Setup. Have an evasion plan. Utilize distractions and exploit concealment through environmental audio and set up traps in case things go sideways, but you have a limited supply of ammo and support items, so plan ahead and resupply on the field as you can. When everything is ready, line up the shot, accounting for distance and range and the qualities of your particular rifle. Exhale. Hold. Take the shot. Take a second one if needed but at great risk. Relocate.

And every shot is meaningful and fucking dramatic. Yes, this is the game behind that gif of the slow motion rifle shot through a nazi's testacles. Splooch.

Its also got full co-op support in the campaign, has multiplayer versus modes and solo and co-op survival.

Games that improve on their potential this much deserve praise, especially when they're offering something different and challenging with room to experiment and get your tactics on.

I'm not sure what more praise The Evil Within should receive, in my opinion at least.

I'm on Chapter 10 at the moment and so far it's been very mediocre. The controls and movement in general are incredibly clunky, sometimes irritating, the visuals are fairly ugly though I do love the DOF effect, the FOV doesn't create any sort of extra tension to me, it's just frustrating, and the dialogue/VO of the characters, especially Sebastian is downright corny, in a bad way lol.

I will say I love the boss fights though. I guess I was just expecting a lot more from the 'legendary' Mikami that many here seem to talk about.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall: Probably the most captivating story of the year, loved every single minute of it.

Alien: Isolation: Really weird that it scored so low on IGN and Gamespot seeing as it's the best AAA game of this year.

Also Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes. Sure it may be a glorified demo but there was such a wide variety of tools at your disposable to constantly find new ways to complete a mission.

AI for sure. And the very fact that its a licensed movie game of such quality is amazing. There must of been a whole lot of passion put into it.

The Banner Saga for sure, though I have seen it on a couple of year-end lists. Great mix of RPG/TBS. Beautiful animation and music. Very enjoyable experience overall.

Cross-posting from my GOTY list that I haven't seen many others talk about:

  • Halfway
ss_97cbaa83bf70f9828c01aac4e24e422db14f9cfb.jpg
A classic take on XCOM SRPGs with a gorgeous retro aesthetic. While The Banner Saga shows us where the genre can go from here, Robotality gave us a traditional sci-fi story that takes us back to the roots of the genre.

  • Ziggurat
It's Binding of Isaac as an FPS... with less poop. But no less addictive. With more items and content, this could have easily climbed higher in this list. As is, it's an excellent first foray into the genre for indie developer Milkstone studios.

  • Dungeon of the Endless
A weirdly ambitious mash-up of genres that shouldn't really work.... but somehow does. Tower defence x RPG x Roguelike x RTS with excellent pixel art, glued together by a huge amount of polish and Amplitude's firm grasp on gameplay balancing, implementing systems that keep each other in check without hindering progression too much.

Bayonetta 1 and 2 Wii U.

And surprisingly; Forza Horizon 2 360.

Because for what is supposed to be an afterthought version outsourced to Sumo, it's a DAMN fun game. Huge props to Sumo!

Because of this thread I have so far purchased today:

CONSORTIUM
The Banner Saga
The Banner Saga is beautiful and lovely, though I would argue that it garnered a lot of praise compared to some of the other overlooked games in here.

Shadowrun Dragonfall.

Anyone who likes old school cRPG's and/or cyberpunk as a genre owes it to themselves to play this. Really great game with solid combat, a beautiful art style and some great writing.
Especially in the various conversations.

yup, DKC TF is the correct answer. Sadly overlooked to the max, and it's probably the best platformer in decades

No mention of South Park yet? It feels like the game came out 2 years ago, but it was this year. It was excellently done and yet it feels like it never came out.

Insurgency is a fantastic tactical multiplayer (competitive and co-op) first-person shooter made by indie devs New World Interactive. The gunplay in the game is superb, and its implementation of classes and loadout customization should be seriously looked at by other developers. If you're a fan of simulation-ish shooters like Red Orchestra 2 or Battlefield 2: Project Reality (or perhaps you even played the original Source mod and didn't realize a full game had been released), I encourage you to look into Insurgency.

It's 50 percent off on Steam right now.

This was one of the most complete games released this year, and easily. Had it won a game of the year award, I wouldn't have even been disappointed.

PvZ Garden Warfare.

For delivering on MP excellence, and creating one of the most fair microstransaction systems.

And also for top notch (free) support.
PvZ GW is criminally underrated. It's not only one of the best shooters of 2014, it's one of the best ever made.

Murdered: Soul Suspect.

It isn't a fantastic game by any means but I thought it was much better than the overall critical reaction would lead you to believe. I'm a huge fan of adventure games so it probably helped.

PVZ:GW will stand the test of time and go down as a legendary all-time classic that people will lament in decades to come. It is the correct answer.

Came to saw Tropical Freeze and I'm not surprised it's been said numerous times already. The game got screwed over by being pushed out of the holidays and releasing early 2014 where it got forgotten by the end of the year. It's such a terrible thing that it hardly is getting award nominations for best soundtrack or platforming gameplay despite how top notch both of those elements are. Especially that music, my god David Wise definitely still has it.

Gotta rep that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

A-class game and barely anybody cared.
Tropical Freeze is one of the best games of the year, but I don't think a lot of people are talking about it lately.
Donkey Kong was robbed.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze: The Thread.

Arguably the best 2D platformer of all time. I'm a big fan of platformers....and my god. This game. David Wise. All over my face.

I just started playing Alien Isolation and am blown away by it. Some of the best atmosphere ever and the use of lighting and sound is astounding. The tension is unreal. So yeah, I am going to go with that for now.

The controls/handling definitely aren't as fluid as something like the Last of Us, and could use some more fine tuning, but they are more than made up for with the absolutely stellar combat mechanics, encounter design, and level design. Every fight and level is memorable and totally distinct, and each generally offers a plethora of ways to go about it. I'm on my second play through and I'm finding I'm doing most encounters totally different from how I did before.

Ugly visuals? Whaaaa? That's just crazy talk. Maybe some of the textures and stuff aren't that great, but it has the best art direction and use of lighting this year bar none. Every location is stunning, and looks like concept art.

Another thing the game should be applauded for is pacing and variety. There are so many different enemies, locations, setpieces, etc. that it never gets boring. Theres just so much, and almost all of it is great. And the difficultly is pretty much perfect, as everything felt like a tense fight for survival like a horror game should be.

I'll give you the story though....definitely the weakest part of the package but eh. Mikami games aren't really known for their stories except for the spectacularly cheesy but amazing Resident Evil 4.

I think the design decisions and creativity at play in this game shame almost every other AAA action/shooter released nowadays. And yeah, the boss fights are dope.

Just finished level 7. The default controls definitely feels a bit off.

It definitely isn't the same league as Vanquish or RE4 so far.

I can't see Alien Isolation and Wolfenstein should receive more praise. Alien Isolation on the pc is near top 10 by critics on metacritic and top 4 by user scores. While the latter has frequently been fps of the year nomination.
