Games no one would care about without the pretty visuals?

For me personally, Crysis.

I love how that game looks and moves, but everytime i play it, it just seems like another pointless shooter that i have no real interest in playing.
The point is that it's a linear sandbox. Unlike many shooters, the game does not always guide you forward and you are often provided with a lot of room for experimentation. Some people just don't enjoy this, however, and run head first into fire fights without exploiting anything the game has to offer.

That might not be for you, but that doesn't mean it's another pointless shooter.

I agree with Crysis and Uncharted. Yes they have good game-play apart from graphics, but had they looked ugly they would not have received the same following.

Why i said personally.

I am familiar with what Crysis want to achieve with the whole sandbox approach it takes to the FPS experience, but from playing the original Crysis and Crysis 2, it just seems like it's missing some better overall mission structure to keep me in the right direction. I really think Far Cry 3 nailed the sandbox approach to an FPS game because i actually felt like i had a clear understanding of were the game wanted me to go and what i could do within this environment.

But to each their own.

Not sure if its been said but child of Eden perhaps, maybe Rez too. They both rely on audio and visual. Take away the visuals and you lose half the experience.

cannot think of a single good-looking game this isn't the case for

The single player campaign for Battlefield 3. And from what I've played of it - Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

Besides immersion, these campaigns offer almost nothing.

Battlefield 3 is completely worthless if you're unable to run it at maximum settings, hence people referring to it as a tech demo. Most dissappointing game of this generation, in my opinion.

Killzone 2. I mean the first one was average at best. Why would anyone care about the sequel? I'll tell you why; that jaw dropping CGI trailer. While the graphics didn't live up to the CGI trailer it was still impressive as hell. That level of fidelity was what really marked the "this is next-gen" feeling for many of us. The gameplay turned out to be pretty average. I swear to god. Guerrilla's designers have no idea what they're doing. They just take whatever idea that sounds cool to them and mix it together with whatever is popular in FPS games these days. The results is a mess which is the KZ2 multiplayer. Killzone 3 is further proof of this. They are unsure of what they're doing and therefore have no confidence in it. That's why Killzone 3 is such a wannabe CoD pile of trash.
I played the campaign three times.

Now I'm going to say Crysis, but unlike everyone else who didn't seem to read the title of the thread, I'm not saying they are bad games, just, without the amazing graphics, no one would've looked twice at the first one.

Also Donkey Kong Country. Love the gameplay, but if it didn't look the way it did, I don't think it would've been successful.

Metroid Prime series. Extremely boring but it did look pretty.

But the thing is, when people are praising Uncharted, they're generally referring to it as an amazing game rather than what it really is: an amazing-looking game.

Uncharted is an okay game with amazing visuals.

If you took a game like Kotor and made it even uglier than it is, then you'd still have an amazing game with an amazing following.

I'll say Alan Wake. The game play is ok, but it gets repetitive and boring fast.

But I don't know how the dlc and sequel fix that. I know the story got more interesting.

What? No. I'm sure it'll be a fine JRPG, but would it have the attention it has without the Studio Ghibli art style and graphical engine that pulls it off so beautifully? Absolutely not. That's all everyone is excited about, otherwise you would have heard more about this game over two years ago when it was on the DS. People certainly aren't excited for it because it's the latest console RPG from the makers of White Knight Chronicles.

...I loved White Knight Chronicles...

I'm totally pumped for Ni No Kuni as well, but then, I'm a big Level 5 fan, and can enjoy their RPGs, even when they're cliched and traditional like WKC. I miss a fun JRPG, cheesiness and all.

The story of WKC is absurd, but I enjoyed the visuals (especially the environments), and the battle system was fun. I've only played Ni No Kuni at E3, and the demo on PSN, but I'm sold on it. But yeah, those visuals are certainly a stand out feature of the game, and part of it's allure, but personally, more Level 5 console goodness is the biggest draw.

Even at their worst, I find their RPGs very charming. Ni No Kuni gives me a Dark Cloud 2 vibe, which is not a bad thing in the least.

Hey it's only my opinion. :P

Nah. When I say it's an amazing game, it's amazing game with amazing visuals.

Killzone 2+ is the posterchild for worthless wastes of code ostensibly justified by visuals. Fuck Guerilla and all of their efforts in the ass with a pitchfork dipped in shit.

This is the Uncharted series OT basically.

I've said it before and ill say it again, graphics are the only thing Uncharted will be remembered for. Forgettable characters, sub-par gunplay and platforming, bland multiplayer, the list goes on. Shooting being the worst of all that.

...do you wanna be friends with me?

I thought Crysis was pretty bad when I played it. It seemed like a game for PC gamers who spent thousands on their rig to brag about and rub about in the face of "inferior console owners". A few years later when I got a PC powerful enough to run it, I picked up the Crysis/Warhead dual pack and was extremely disappointed with its gameplay, especially gunplay. I'd rather play through a COD campaign than that game honestly :P

The novelty of great graphics quickly wears off leaving gameplay, narrative, sound and characters to fill the void and I can't think of any game that I've played personally that fits that criteria. I love the Killzone series and universe and I love some of the ideas present in it and Crysis, both of which are being mentioned a number of times throughout this thread and throughout. Uncharted wouldn't sell so many millions of copies if it were an average game as some have said. I think it's funny that we say "game a" is so average but that same individual will laud "game b" that is game a in a new paint. Ironic how we can be so partial to certain games and criticize another that operates along the same principles.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 has the most stellar visual and auditory presentation of any game released this generation. Character models scream, "Play me!" Basic actions are larger than life and Hyper Combos flood the screen in fireworks. At times MvC3 can be an aggravating game to play, but finishing a match with Magnetic Shockwave and hearing the announcer exclaim "Hyper Combo KO" always puts a smile on my face.

Most notable for me is the Far Cry series. I don't think I could bring myself to play those games if the graphics were only mediocre. I could have tolerated a BF3 with lesser graphics if the gameplay was more along the lines of BF2. :P
