Games that are, and will always be perfect.

A game that you don't think could be improved upon in any way ever. Regardless of the new and improved technology and modern standards of game design.

I can only think of one.

I know it's cliche but it's also true. The game is perfect in every way. It's does everything right and nothing you change could make it any better than it already is. I think this game is the pinnacle of all games and everything since has been a step backwards.

Huge, scary fuck bosses? Check.
Amazing sense of progression? Check.
Timeless 2D graphics and art design? Check. The soundtrack and graphics STILL make this game an incredibly engrossing game over 15 years since its release. I think the game is as pretty today as it was when I first played it.

My second game would be Majora's Mask. It's 3D Zelda at its best. Second best game ever made (behind Super Metroid).

My only problem with Super Metroid was the difficulty. The exploration was top notch and everything fit into place, but the game was entirely too damn easy.

If perfect means "as good as it gets" here I agree.

Also, Doom and the first Super Mario Kart doesn't seem to get beaten either by their sequels or competition.

I'm going to say something more contemporary:

The Bit.Trip games aren't necessarily the best games I've played in the last five years, but they are some of the most pure. Someone called it a "video game concept album" and I think that's really true: each entry was an experimental play on classic mechanics. Beat, Core, Void, Runner, Fate and Flux...each one is distinct in my mind, enjoyable in completely different ways.

And of course the soundtrack is killer.

i wish there was an F-Zero game that would fit this bill.

+1 for the MM mentions. imo, SM's controls were improved in Fusion and ZM, meaning that there was room for improvement.

What a pointless nostalgia clusterfuck. The only 'perfect' games are the ones that are rose-tinted by your own memories. The number of flaws that can be identified in a given game is limited only by the scope of the analysis.

Two games that is perfect.

Zelda a Link to the Past and Chrono Trigger.

The art, music, story, gameplay.....everything just came together so perfectly.

i dunno. i think tetris games have improved quite a lot since the original version.

Yep. Tetris improved immensely with the introduction of The Grand Master Series and The Arika Rotation System.

Whether even this can be improved upon, who knows.

Ikaruga and Demon's Souls!

Ikaruga I feel like can be improved by having it not put my genitals in a clamp when I play.

That's not to say I do not love Ikaruga, mind.

I usually don't complain about no image captions but this is just ridiculous. How am I supposed to know what game this is?

It says Dodonpachi Dai-ou-jou Black Label in English on the poster, but I suppose it's a little hard to make out. I'll go edit it.

It also means that as the years go by you don't find yourself longing for newer modern features to be implemented in the game.

If only Super Metroid would allow you to lock on.

If only Super Metroid had a compass.

If only Super Metroid had more of a story and cutscenes and a tutorial to teach you the nuances of the gameplay.

Super Metroid don't need no fucking tutorial. It has birds. Those birds teach you everything you need to know. Super Metroid came out in the before time. In the long long ago. Before games assumed the players were retarded monkeys who needed to have everything explained to them.

No advances and technology could ever take away what Super Metroid is. The game will never be unplayable because of dated graphics or broken mechanics (by current standards). It's perfect and that's all there is to it.
