Games that let you place traps

Goldeneye remote mines. Especially using the 'hold B, press A' quick detonation method.

There was wonderful depth to mine traps in Goldeneye:

Place any kind of mine on an ammo box. Pick up ammo box: mine disappears but is still active!

Place mine on stairs. Mine falls to base of stairs and is invisible to other players.

Blow up TV-monitors on bunker. Mines now float in midair. Face directly downward to make the mine as flat as possible. Now people will run facefirst into a proximity mine.

Place mines on glass in Stack. Shoot out glass. Too bad the mine is vertical and easily seen.

Destroy body armor with gun. Place mine on top. New body armor will hide mine.

I forgot all about this one, I used to love it as a kid even though I had no idea what I was doing because I rented it and didn't have a manual.

Tecmo's Deception or bust.

the first one was first person, which really really added to the suspense and action...2 and 3 were both good but were third person and dont capture the same tense atmosphere.

007: Nightfire also had some great mines you could use in multiplayer. Setting traps and just waiting for the boom when the AIs ran into them was great.

in a similar kind of way, I also enjoy setting up fortifications and barricades.

from what I remember hearing about that unreal engine 4 game Fortnite, it has both traps and barricades. I hope that one comes out soon.

I just finished playing through the entirety Orcs Must Die 2 with a friend recently. What a fun ride that was. My other co-operative trap/tower defense game is Sanctum.

I was wondering though what other trap placing games are out there?

I vaguely remember playing Tecmo's Deception and Trap Gunner on PSX and having a good time with those.

The series continued on for a while: Kagero, Deception 3: Dark Delusions and Trapt. Great series and unlike the original, it didn't take up 70% of a memory card.

Does the Assassin in Diablo 2 count? She has traps, but the gameplay won't end up exactly how you want because it isn't the main mechanic.

Having a lightning trap assassin that never needed to bother seeing enemies was truly a joy. Move mouse to edge of screen, cast 4 lightning sentry, cast 1 death sentry, wait. Walk forward, move mouse to edge of screen, repeat.

Ragnarok Online with...traps, more or less. Luring a lightning fast enemy into an ankle snare always got my adrenaline pumping.

Minecraft has the recent addition of trip wire too, I think. Keep meaning to make 'use' of that.

Stranger's Wrath! Playing this right now and some of the live ammo serves as traps. You can stick fuzzles to walls, floors etc. to set traps and use chippunks to lure enemies there.

Battlefield 3, has mines, c4, claymores, and motion trackers Obvious stuff I know. But still rewarding.

ZombiU has landmines, and door barricades,

Lost Kingdoms had Mandragoras and some other kinds of cards that were activated by running over them or near them.

Geist basically was playing tricks on people

I have lots of Nostalgia for Tecmos deception, does it hold up? Even back then I remember it being kinda clunky.

I don't remember the name of it (someone tell me if you do), but there was an import game on PS1 or PS2 where you played a feudal lord and put traps out to kill people in your kingdom who would try to attack you for raising taxes or whatever.

I LOVE the Deception series and seriously want something new like that. None of the above suggestions really fit the bill, so I'll keep waiting, or make my own some day.

I loved this series so much, i wish they kept making it. It´s a shame that no other game is quite like Kagero´s Deception.

Yesterday i tried Dungeon Defenders (was on PSN+) and it has traps... but it´s not the same. Hopefully they´ll put the old Tecmo games as PSone classics.

Maybe my favorite type of weapon. I loved the line launcher in Dead Space 2 since you could stick it to surfaces and it extended outwards.
Line Launcher is what made a good game great.
Sometimes I'd place it behind me because I had a feeling beasts would try to sneak up on me and then when I heard that BANG in the distance, it sent chills.

Does Dead Space 3 have that weapon?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Keep them coming.

I've never played Monster Hunter but based on this thread and my thread about loot games I think I may just change that soon.
Monster Hunter is awesome placing traps, especially since some materials can only be crafted by capturing the monster.

Mark of the Ninja.

Took a long time but finally someone said it. The best thing about the traps in Mark of the Ninja? You can scare to death your opponents and make them walk right into the trap.

Just be aware that Monster Hunter isn't hack-and-slash or clickspam like other loot games. The combat is slow and deliberate, so timing is key. It's very rewarding though, especially when you're successful in setting a trap and hitting the monster with it.

What I'm looking for specifically is a game that let's you control an avatar around an environment placing traps for enemies that try to attack your avatar. I understand that dungeon keeper games just give you a birds eye view of a dungeon that lets you place traps but there is no avatar to control.

Why is this type of gameplay so niche?
Dungeon Keeper is the bird's eye view of a dungeon that lets you place traps with no avatar control.
Evil Genius is similar, but it places your avatar on the map. The trap gameplay is much more in-depth. It's pretty hard to top Evil Genius even if it's not quite what we wanted. Must be listed.

Seriously now, as mentioned, most MMOs have one or more classes that can place traps, usually of the ranger/hunter persuasion. Guild Wars 2 has THREE; rangers, thieves and necromances can all lay down traps (called marks in the latter's case but functionally identical):

Was also going to post Tenchu/Mark of the Ninja, but already mentioned. Finally, I had forgotten about Spy vs Spy, even though I loved it way back when I played on the Spectrum, nearly 30 years ago!

I'll check out Evil Genius. Does it still hold up?

Also, I beat Mark of the Ninja last month. Brilliant game. Will definitely do new game plus at some point.

duke 3d laser traps where the best. I drowned the levels in them.
best was you could see them over remote cameras. place them before a door with a camera, watch the door thorugh the screen, open it, and see it happen. good times. I played the demo of that game more often than the final release.

I like Cyrax's bomb traps. I think it would be pretty cool if there were more inventive projectiles like that in fighting games.
