Games that made it fun to kill (virtual) people

For me, there was something disturbingly satisfying about killing people in Half-Life 2. I think it was the staticy, bleepy radio noise after they died. I used to love lining up a pistol shot from miles away, squeezing the trigger and then hearing that noise as the body tumbled earthward.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Shooting dudes in the face with a silenced Silverballer in the Hitman games is one of the most immensely satisfying things I've ever done in a game.

Yep, spent copious amounts of hours on GoldenEye's shortest mission, and driving a tank over endless enemies, or shooting tank shells by their feet to send them flying. :3

More recently I've really enjoyed Just Cause 2 with it's grappling hook mechanic. Weather it's attaching soldiers to jets and helicopters, attaching whole vehicles to stationary objects during high speed chases or even dragging people behind cars wild west style it's pretty entertaining.

Oh, God. I got so sick of hearing that noise every time I killed a Combine soldier. They didn't need the sound effect to play every time!

But I agree about HL2 having satisfying kills. The gravity gun and Gary's Mod extended that enjoyment tenfold.

Goldeneye 007 is the first thing that came to my mind, too. I was in sixth grade when it came out, and my neighbor friend would come over every day after school (and sometimes before school) to play it, and we spent hours simply blowing people up in the last room of the Facility (the one with the gas tanks). Infinite Ammo was the first major cheat that we unlocked, and holy shit -- all we did was blow people up and laugh our asses off.

:memories <3

Jagged Alliance 2. Beheading fools with bullets never gets old.

Classic Action Quake 2 - people shot in the leg would limp, blood would fly out of their body when shot especially with a sniper rifle, and when shot they would keep losing health until they stopped to bandage, and there was no health recovery so every hit was meaningful. The headshot sound was particularly nice as well.
Modern Bad Company 2 - The regular kills are your modern shooter garden variety, keep emptying bullets until you overwhelm their health, but the explosives are awesome. You can drop a house on someones head. Ram a C4 laden quad into their tank. Blow someones cover into little pieces. Shoot someone with a tracer dart and then send a guided rocket at them. Oh and shooting a smoke grenade into someones face, killing them in the process never gets old.

So much nostalgia in this thread. I also remember putting hours upon hours into the MGS2 demo that came with ZoE, turning the guards into porcupines with the dart gun, lol.

I enjoy making bin bombs in crackdown. Also people baseball is awesome in saints row one person takes a hostage throws it to the other who booms said hostage with a baseball bat or the keyboard if your in the club (dress as mario and luigi for added lol). Theif 1 I used to be a fan of black jacking dudes and chucking them down wells.

That + the accompanying vocal bit is one of the all-time best sound clips. I love how it varies based on where you dropped the metrocop.

The HL2 Overwatch is goddamned brilliant. Such great writing and delivery.

Barbarian on the C64 was the first time I witnessed virtual murder. You could end a fight at any time, by decapitating your opponent. Then a little green troll would drag away the body and kick the head off the screen. I was 4.

Modern day, Ninja Gaiden 2 on 360 is just so visceral in it's depiction of violence that it actually makes me feel kind of bad for the poor enemies that must taste the steel.

I also vote for Carmageddon.

This game needs a new version.
It *was* in development :(
Looked great too.

To contribute:
Carmageddon
Soldier of Fortune
Jagged Alliance
Star Wars Battlefront (the insane impulse forces)
Syndicate

Honorable mentions:
Rainbow Six 3 phosporous grenades.
The original Quakeworld Team Fortress sniper gibs. (so satisfying. I still hear that wet meaty sound in my sleep)

Hell yeah. I always played Sniper in the original Team Fortress for that very reason. One shot and you're gibbed.

Not one person mentions Populous? Playing god and killing all your minions?

I don't wan't to live in this world anymore. /slits wrist

I almost mentioned it! Digging out the ground underneath the enemy's people was always satisfying.

I have to mention The Space Quest series as well if killing the protaganist counts

I have so many fond memories of mwing people down Vice City, although I think Goldeneye was my first love and the OP explained its charms well.

If we're talking killing the protagonist too? Resident Evil 4!

AC:Brotherhood.

Having like nine people surrounding you and then just dashing from person to person in a chain kill while countering every once in awhile is so satisfying.

Before it released I actually thought Gears of War took things too far with the whole curb stomping thing. But when I finally got to play some multiplayer matches and saw how insanely awesome it was, even when happening to me, I had to change my tune.

Getting killed in incredible ways is almost as fun as doing the killing yourself.

Euphoria physics make killing/hurting a lot of fun in GTAIV and RDR. I like to shoot people in the ass and watch them stumble over. My favorite is driving a bus down a busy sidewalk in GTAIV and watching as the screaming civ's go flying everywhere.

Speaking of disturbing, I stumbled into a Hero of the Web today on the Saints Row forum, in a thread about what people want in the next game:

NEW : torture and interrogation
Not only gore and violence improved from SR2, I wish torture and interrogation in SR3.
Instead of killing the enemy, I want to capture, bring to the crib, torture and interrogate this enemy.
Maybe torture by punch, kick, trample, melee weapon. I want to see the enemy crying, suffering,
and begging to stop. The longer is the torture, the better. I want to see the enemy tied by
ropes or chains to the wall, or to the chair, or to the floor. I would like to have several
different torture techniques, some techniques which can be unlocked during the game,
techniques to torture without killing.
Wow

The last thief game, I loved taking out opponents in that game with trickery and deception. At the mo I love hitman 4, pushing my target down a bunch of stairs and then put the 2 shots in his spine between the shoulder blades and walking along. So satisfying.

Also obligatory any MGS game, I think 4 did it best in prague, loved getting spotted and taking on all contenders and then switching to cat and mouse games where I would quickly do a hold up, get what I needed and put one in the head unsilenced and then peg it. I spent hours doing that.

GTA IV. Previous GTAs were fun as well, but the new AI was more unpredictable and acted very realistically sometimes.

Wow, no mention of Dead Space?

The whole system encourages you to find cool awesome ways to take Necromorphs apart. Started playing 2 last night, and got a great achievement for using the Javelin gun to pin a necro to the wall, but he had to travel at least 17 metres and stick to get it.

Wish I made a video.

You can take a necro completely apart in so many ways.

As far as older games go, yeah Goldeneye/Perfect Dark were good. Also, Resident Evil 4 had good limb hit detection.
